AC for READY SET GLOW

AC herself was there as the official face of cosmetics brand READY SET GLOW. While the MONEY performance blew fans away, most wanted more. Some were expecting her to perform her single 4 MYSELF released last year under Star Music. The official music video released  July 2023, features rising star Jameson Blake.

After the performance she was interviewed by former UAAP / OnePH correspondent Martina Lao. During the interview she shared the brand goes hand in hand with her live performances. Her make up looks perfect even through sweat and heat. So much so that it prompted Martina Lao to comment, “I am here up close with AC, looking at her make up, everything is perfect. The eye liner, the eye shadow, ang ganda AC.”

AC said,“Ako feel ko po talaga READY SET GLOW pag nasa stage po ako. From back stage I did my own make up with READY SET GLOW. I really do enjoy doing my own make up. Make up is very therapeutic for me. It’s like I’m painting my face. That’s why backstage during my make-up, I can go on stage showing everybody the fierce AC.”

Use Different Colors

Her advice is to not be afraid to use different colors and shades, “One thing I’ve learned to use more often are colors. They are so inclusive of everything. There are so many colors available. The eyeliners, the gel liners, the eyeshadows. I like to play with colors when I use make up.”

Rest and Laughing as Therapy

One of her secrets to looking great is to make sure she gets ample rest and enough sleep. “Pag may time pa po ako na tutulog po ako. Long rest for sure. Also finding what recharges you. I like to be with my friends. Pag may time po ako, I just laugh and laugh and laugh with them.”

MasterChef is the series that has caught the world by storm having editions in the U.S., Australia, Canada and even here in the Philippines. None of the previous versions will have the prestige and international flavor of MasterChef Asia having contestants from 8 different countries. There are 3 Filipinos in the 15 contestants: Jake Aycardo, Lica Ibarra and Rico Amancio. They are joined by amateur cooks from China, India Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The show premieres 9pm September 3, 2015 THURSDAY on LIFETIME (Skycable ch 65, Cignal digital TV- ch 63). The primetime airing of Master Chef Asia is on Thursdays and Sundays. There are also replays in between and after so check program schedules for your cable/digital TV provider. Immediately after MCA is our very own Anne Curtis’ show also on Lifetime: F WORD OUT LOUD. Mentor and judges include some of the biggest names in the culinary world: Chef Susur Lee, Chef Bruno Menard and MasterChef Australia Finalist Audra Morrice. Susur Lee is no stranger to cooking show fans. He is the world famous Hong Kong chef who has graced nearly all TV competitions as judge: TOP CHEF, CHOPPED U.S. and Canada and competitor in Iron Chef U.S.. He was also able to host Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods Americas in 2 of his restaurants in Toronto.

Susur has been referred to as the “Father of Fusion” and has won numerous culinary awards including Food and Wine magazine’s “Ten Chefs of the Millenium” and the 5-Star Diamond award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. He is the owner-chef of four highly-rated restaurants – LEE, Luckee, Bent and LEE Kitchen in Toronto, Canada as well as TungLok Heen in Singapore. For 20 years, he has been the Executive Consulting Chef for the TungLok Group, which owns over 40 restaurants in Asia.

Chef Bruno Menard earned 3 Michelin Stars at L’Osier, a Tokyo-based restaurant that has been voted one of the top French restaurants outside of France. Bruno has spent 20 years establishing some of the best restaurants in Asia and currently runs a top-tier culinary consulting firm in Singapore.

Audra Morrice has been described as the next Martha Stewart of Asia. Her success on Master Chef Australia cemented her career in food and launched her into the world of culinary TV. Audra is currently based in Australia. Working closely with the Singapore Tourism Board, she is an ambassador for the Singapore Celebrity Concierge campaign. Her televised cooking show, Tasty Conversations is also GEM in Australia and on FYI across Asia.

These three prestigious judges were kind enough to be interviewed at the URBN Kitchen during their Philippine tour to promote the show. Film reviewer Philbert Dy joined me in chatting with these great culinary minds.

—Jude: Was there any language or cultural barrier considering contestants came from 8 different countries?

Bruno: 8 different countries, 8 different languages but only one language on Master Chef Asia cuisine. We speak the language of cooking. There is only one common passion, it doesn’t matter how you speak, where you’re coming from. We have the same passion. We speak cooking. Cuisine is what we do so there is no barrier. That’s the beauty of cuisine. You can see today even though we are in Philippines in Manila we give to three people exactly the same ingredients they come with 3 different recipes. Even if you come form the same country you’re gonna do something completely different every time. That’s the beauty of cooking everybody understands food. We are here to have emotion so bring me the emotion through the food. Through the story on the plate.

Audra: It’s very simple you have 30 minutes these ingredients, cook!

Bruno: I’m not used to English myself. You have one theme, they know exactly what to do. They just go for it based on their instinct their knowledge. We don’t care where they come from, the language, what we care for is about the story. It’s about the flavor it has to be delicious look good, impress us give us sensation. And tell us why we’re going to be thrilled eating look amazing, but why does it look amazing?

—Philbert: How do you balance what kind of ingredients you are using? Doesn’t someone from China for example have an advantage over Vietnam depending on what kind of ingredients are available to them?

Audra: if this is your challenge the next one might not be. It was sort of varied in the kind of challenges we had. Also they were put to the test how well they knew their neighbors. No one really has an unfair advantage. It was very well balance. We might insist you cook a certain type of cuisine for this challenge. For the next challenge you cook something totally different. It’s a bit up and down for everyone. Everyone had their moment to shine.

Bruno: Let’s say we ask them to cook lechon the specialty from here. But you’re gonna have someone to go on stage to teach you and explain step by step and how to do it correctly. It was very fair all the time.

—Jude: How would you characterize the finalists were they a strong batch? What’s similar in all of them?

Audra: In Australia they are in season 7 in U.S. and Canada I don’t know how many seasons. Also in their local countries they are in 3 or 4 seasons. Contestants are very cluey on what to expect in the show. The beauty about Master Chef is every new batch comes in and they never know what’s going to be thrown at them. You can never really prepare for it. What we saw was incredible cooking. There was a lot of stories heartfelt cooking with a lot of stories attached to it. I think they also evolved from day 1 to the last episode. A lot of them evolved and developed. We had contestants who had very humble plans about their future. AT the end of their time on the show it became bigger. The world is their oyster. When the attitude changes everything else changes.

—Philbert: Chef Susur how has judging affected your view on food, when you go out and eat and so on?

Susur: When you are cooking you are your own self. I’ve been doing it for many years. Being a chef it’s like being a conductor in the kitchen. You are making sure your cooks hit the right notes. So with judging it’s very much the same. Finally you can actually hear yourself. All these years conducting, not just saying it, the moment you are tasting. So you are articulating certain things that you are hearing yourself. It’s great therapy for a chef being a judge. Its no different when you write your own notes, you have better memory, when you’re typing it, exactly the same with me. All that experience gave me more satisfaction with the knowledge I’ve acquired. You actually express it in words and teaching somebody to help them get to the next level. To make sure they understand and also explore, I think that’s what’s important to be a master. If you wana hold a title as judge you have to be a master. The viewer as Bruno said can’t talk back to you. Your judgment is going to tell them this is the right way, the wrong way. This is something I’m learning.

A TALE OF SAMURAI COOKING: A TRUE LOVE STORY is a compelling saga of Samurai culture through cuisine. The story written by Michio Kashiwada, Yukiko Yamamuro, and writer/director for this film Yuzo Asahara is unique in revealing that samurai spirit is not only about warfare or violence but also of honor and peace. Through every meal there’s a message of peace between the people who prepare and partake of it. Ingredients gathered from the remotest places like mountainous areas to the coastline are used to symbolize the harmony of the kingdoms.

The Funaki clan is part of the Samurai class, which serves the Lords as chef. This is a double purpose, not only are they supposed to be skilled in cooking but is also a security measure. Those were chaotic times with upheavals and power struggles within royal clans. Assassination attempts include poisoning apart from deadly armed assault.

Dennai Funaki (Toshiyuki Nishida) is the master chef of the Funaki clan. Haru’s knowledgeable palate and deep understanding of Japanese cuisine amazed him. He was hoping that her own passion for cooking would be able to guide and rub off on his son Yasonobu (Kengo Kora). Dennai’s eldest son had died of plague, who was supposed to be the heir to his Master chef post.

Second son Yasonobu had dedicated his life to Kenjutsu (swordsmanship) roughly translated in the subtitles as fencing. He sees cooking as a task for ‘women and children’. Dennai was hoping that through his marriage with Haru, Yasonobu would develop a genuine love for cooking. In one scene Dennai asks Yasonobu, “Waving a sword and shedding blood, is that all a samurai can do?”

Nishida & Iron Chef’s Chairman Kaga

Samurai chef Dennai played by Toshiyuki Nishida is a 2-time Japan Academy Award winner with dozens of film titles to his credit. One of his most powerful performances was REUNION as a funeral director who dealt with the 2011 earthquake in the city of Kamaishi. REUNION was part of the Eiga Sai film festival at Shang Cineplex, Shang rila Plaza. Watch out for the line up of this fest in a week or so, which allows viewers to watch some of the best Japanese films for free. Here, Nishida is the sage chef that trying to impart his knowledge to an unwilling son.

International audiences will be delighted with the casting of Takeshi Kaga known more popularly as Chairman Kaga in (the original) IRON CHEF. For those who may not know it Takeshi Kaga is one of the more distinguished actors in Japan having lengthy roles not just in film but in theater namely musicals. You have to look closely as you may miss Kaga underneath the Samurai hair and costume. The film has banked on his fictional identity as a gourmet. He is cast here as powerful Lord Naomi Maeda who has taken over the domain that Dennai serves.

Haru Funaki as the central character had to be cast with someone who is obviously attractive to melt the hearts of audiences. She also had to be able to hold her own in a male dominated society, at least with her husband and role in her family.

Japanese superstar Aya Ueto more than fulfills this demanding role. She does have that endearing quality and being her own woman, even in real life. Ueto has won several New Comer awards when she debuted as a film star a few years back. She actually started out as a singer early in her career. Filipinos may see a strong parallelism with our own Sarah Geronimo who was an accomplished singer first and then successfully has a film career. Sarah has endorsed huge brands such as Rexona from Unilever alone. Sarah was rumored to endorse Cream Silk (also from Unilever) but turned out to be Anne Curtis. Ueto has been proclaimed as Japan’s Commercial Queen for 5 different years. She’s statistically the most popularly used image for TVCs, billboards and print ads in Japan.

Her husband Yasonobu (in the film) called Haru a ‘Vixen’ out of spite. She wouldn’t hesitate to disagree with him and often even go so far as to disobey his wishes. For this he would call her Vixen to connote cunning. In Japanese mythology foxes take the shape of women to seduce men and sometimes marry them and have children with magical powers.

The historic first ever ABS CBN Sports & Action- Rexona Fight Expo was held last November 8, 2014 at the Eastwood City Open Area. While the Philippines has long been the home of boxing icons such as Pacquiao, Donaire, Ellorde, Espinosa and countless more, combat sports has seen a recent resurgence of practitioners and popularity especially with the growth of MMA.

There have been countless viewing parties sometimes held for free whenever a huge Pacquiao fight rolls along such as the upcoming fight against Alghieri. But almost none of them actually encourage people to GET INTO the sport of boxing. As fitness regiment for both men and women boxing has grown in the U.S. and around the world morphing into TAEBO etc etc.

Rexona’s tagline of DO MORE is embodied in the many different physical activities that were part of the fight expo. There were free Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai classes conducted by experts. The F.I.S.T. Gym setup booths for consultation, complete with mats and a ring.

Participants got to play arcade games measuring punching strength and TEKKEN 6 absolutely free. Fans also had a chance to win a boxing glove signed by Manny Pacquiao through a contest for the most number of consecutive punches on a speedball.

Amateur bouts in both boxing and MMA were also held. This is where the fight expo gives a real boost. Unlike running or basketball finding a safe venue for combat sports such as boxing and MMA are not as prevalent. You have to be a dedicated professional to get into the big events locally such as ONE FC, PXC. That’s IF you’re talented enough to do so. Those have international fighters and high-level competition.

SO if you’re an MMA practitioner or a weekend warrior who has a day job, doing it for the pure love of sport, where can you go to actually compete? MMA fights have to be supervised in a safe controlled manner. At the fight expo, Pinoy amateur MMA fighters gave a good account of themselves. The event may have been one of the few venues where they could show their skills and passion. People just visiting Eastwood Mall during the weekend who watched the fighters, witnessed the enormous technical mastery in strikes, wrestling and ground game that it takes even at the amateur level to win.

3 Boxing Champs + UFC Fighter Carlos Condit

If all the action wasn’t enough for you 3 Pinoy boxing champs: Genesis ‘Azukal’ Servania -WBO Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Champ, ‘King Arthur’ Villanueva– Int’l Super Flyweight Champ and Jason ‘El Niño’ Pagara WBO Intl Light Welterweight were also there. They not only had a meet and greet but shared their warm up, stretching exercises with participants. Not long after former UFC Interim Welterweight champion, WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, had a meet and greet session with fans. The day was a huge success with a bona fide UFC star in Condit touching base with his Filipino supporters. Condit was able to pose with super fan Ari Repalda and son Red.

Although it was an exhibition game it was played with as much intensity and ferocity as any international match the AZKALS have played abroad. It was the third and deciding game between Team James and Team Phil Younghusband. An equal amount of AZKALS players were there for each squad reinforced with legends from Manchester United.

Pinoys trooped to the University of Makati Stadium to witness the conclusion along with Manchester United’s Andy Cole and Paul Scholes. Upcoming players that were discovered through the CLEAR grass roots program were also part of the line up.

Last April, CLEAR brought Manchester United trainers and coaches and taught 32 up coming players under 20, which were whittled down to 6. They were divided to play in the CLEAR DREAM MATCH as well: Javier Augstine Gayoso, Miko Mabanag and Yoshiharu Koizumi for TEAM PHIL and Jose Primo Santos, Daniel Gadia and Joseph Diamante for TEAM JAMES.

Ticket sales from the sold out venue also benefitted the Tuloy Foundation, which aims to help street kids be integrated to mainstream society.

Defense and teamwork ruled the first half, as both squads were able to foil attempts for goals. TEAM JAMES’ Roland Sadia was a steady goalkeeper saving goal attempts more than twice. His defense included a free kick from Phil Younghusband. Sadia’s efforts were awarded with the BEST GOAL KEEPER of the Game.

The second half was looser offensively. Andy Cole is one of the most prolific scorers ever to wear a Manchester United uniform. We found out why, he had a very close goal attempt off an assist from Misagh Bahadoran but was still unsuccessful. Immediately after that Joaquin Cañas aggressively took the ball closer and scored at the 72^nd minute. Cole was able to break down the defense enough while Cañas took the initiative to score the precious goal for team James.

Team Phil valiantly tried to get back into it. Phil Younghusband himself tried so hard it may have led to an injury. In the last 5 minutes the ball was high in the air Phil tried to keep possession with a header. Unfortunately Reynald Villareal of TEAM James also had the same idea, which, resulted in both players clashing heads. Phil had to be taken out of the game for stitches. While painful, the injury is not expected to affect the future performance of the most famous AZKAL.

The game ended 1-0 in favor of TEAM James. Most pundits believed that TEAM Phil had the slightly stronger line up. Simone Rota, Kenshiro Daniels, Chris Greatwich were all revelations in the recently concluded AFC Cup. Paul Scholes was also seen as a better all around player than Andy Cole. Long time DLSU Football coach Hans Smit picked TEAM Phil to win but again only with a slight edge.

TEAM JAMES, evidently wanted the win more. They swept each of the special awards: Izzo El Habib was the BEST STRIKER, Simon Greatwich earned BEST MIDFIELDER while Joaquin Cañas earned both the BEST DEFENDER award and the BEST PLAYER OF THE GAME.

The significance of the CLEAR DREAM MATCH is much more than just having a few international professional players in an exhibition here. CLEAR Brand Manager Andrew Copuyoc explained, “We all know basketball is the no.1 sport here in the Philippines but CLEAR will never stop dreaming football will become the most popular sport in this country. I do believe the trilogy especially with the legends from Manchester United has helped CLEAR’s dream to become a reality.”

Paul Scholes said it may have been James’ faith in his team that made the difference, “People have been very nice here in the Philippines especially those who’ve looked after us. It’s great to be here. It sucks to lose the game but James was very confident maybe he was right. He railed the referee a bit but they did really well. The first half we had decent chances with the penalty as well. It didn’t quite work out as we planned. But it was a really enjoyable game and the people are nice here.”

Chris Greatwich also put the presence of the two Manchester United legends in perspective, “When you have players of this caliber as Phil said is a privilege. We also get to play with our friends. For the Filipino football public it’s such a rush seeing these players in action for this game.”

Immediately after coming from their 2^nd place finish in the recently concluded Asian Football Confederation Cup, the AZKALS are already looking forward to the future. AZKALS team leaders Phil Younghusband together with brother James are the two official endorsers of the brand CLEAR from Unilever.

Phil explained how the company is able to help sports in general, “Unilever, CLEAR they’ve been so supportive of sports, of football. They have programs in basketball in running, in triathlon. In football, they’ve just been so supportive of the sport. Promoting the sport helps promote the people in that sport, helps me James and all of the players. I’m obviously very grateful and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to just be the face of the products (CLEAR & REXONA). So it’s helped me on a personal level and its helped Philippine Football. They’ve helped Philippine football grow and make me happier than anything.”

The upcoming CLEAR DREAM Match this Saturday June 7, 2014 at the University of Makati Stadium features two former Manchester United players in Paul Scholes and Andy Cole. Scholes has been part of several Manchester United Championship squads and will play for TEAM PHIL. Cole has scoring titles in nearly every year will be in TEAM JAMES.

Paul Scholes is the quintessential Manchester United player having played his entire career from 1993 to 2013. He is considered as one of the best midfielders of his generation and is also one of the most colorful personalities as well.

Andy Cole is the second highest goal scorer in Premiere League history with 187. Apart from Manchester United he has also played for Arsenal, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City. He was also considered as one of the highest paid players in the early 90s.

News website INTERAKSYON reported the competing teams for the CLEAR DREAM MATCH will also be composed of amateur players specifically chosen and trained by Manchester United Soccer Schools coaches Kevin O’Connel and Jamie Fitzpatrick. The 6 were chosen from 32.

The teams are a mix of national team players and the 6 from the development program sponsored by CLEAR last April. These are the kinds of development programs that search for future National team players for the AZKALS. The CLEAR DREAM MATCH ticket sales will also benefit the Tuloy Foundation, which aims to help street kids be integrated to mainstream society.

AZKALS recent spate of wins was aired in ABS CBN Sports namely the AFC Challenge Cup, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and Long Teng Cup in Taiwan. Fans should watch out for the Peace Cup to be aired later this year where the hold the title of defending champions.

ABS CBN Sports has telecast the team’s rise to fame and success. This has been made evident with the Philippines having risen in the FIFA Rankings from a low of 216 in 2004 all the way to its current ranking of 127, which was achieved in February of this year.
