Ascend had its detractors, but it was critically well received and did well for a time. Personally I thought Ascend was quite good and I enjoyed it for quite some time (although I found the automatic weapons a bit of a compromise).

Lol ascend was trash. So many players were disappointed with it. Especially the experienced ones. Those top Tribes players are actually testers for the pre alpha of Midair, and they love it. IMO you have no idea what you’re talking about since they are starting to take off like crazy after their exhibit at PAX.

They are not reopening it to keep the project going. They can already do thay with the funds they got from Kickstarter. They reopened at the request of many people who wanted instant access or swag. It’s closed again because of the influx of buyers, and will be reopened once they’ve caught up with all the steam keys distributions.

What about the $50k plus in chargebacks?

It allows people to purchase instant access who came in at a later date. I for one have more than 120 hours within the last 3 weeks of playing this game (at least 85% in organized pickup games where everyone is required to be on teamspeak), and am so happy that I didn’t miss out…

Few Sci Fi games succeed? I’m pretty sure there’s no shortage of popular sci-fi themed games. =) Tribes is just difficult to sell because, well, it’s relatively difficult to learn and play as FPS games go. =)

Tribes 3 tanked horribly because of the hardcores (it was actually a decent game). I was amazed that some of them actually enjoyed Ascend.

in any case, very few sci-fi themed games succeed in modern gaming. Someone needs to come up with an original idea rather than going back to the past.

Mathews and I discussed this a bit when I talked to them. Tribes is definitely a tough game balance market-wise. Cater too much to the “old guard” — who want everything crunchy, deep, and complex — and you make the game inaccessible. Go too far the other direction and you lose the fans that loved the originals. And I agree — being mod-friendly could be a big key for older players. Maybe the key is to balance Overwatch-style accessibility with Tribes core gameplay, but make it highly mod-friendly? It’s a tough call for sure.

Ascend was an excellent remake of the game but the fact is it was supported by the hardcore old school players for the first couple years. ANY game is gonna get stale after playing it that long hence the numbers decline. The last thing the devs seem to forget was the easy modability of the first 2 Tribes games. Some truly fun variations of the game such as “Renegades” kept things fresh.

IMO, this game isnt going to succeed. Its got nothing more to offer than whats already out there. Maybe if they drop the Unreal engine and build their own and make it mod friendly theyll get some traction.

Hey! Dev here. We had dozens of emails in our inbox requesting we reopen it for people who missed it or for people who wanted to upgrade. The sustained revenue also helps us add quality and features, so it’s a win for everyone. 🙂

Well, they consider it successful — at least enough to be able to continue development and have a projected release date. 🙂

You didn’t succeed at something like crowdfunding and then immediately do it again unless you failed the first time.
