Catch German Moreno’s 50^th year in Showbiz celebration tonight at GMA 7 Saturday April 27, 13.  It was the biggest collection of stars at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (better known as NPAT) at the Resort’s World Manila last April 24.

German Moreno or Kuya Germs as he is fondly called has discovered the biggest names in showbiz throughout his 50-year career. Sharon Cuneta who is currently with TV5, crossed network barriers along with Billy Crawford and others to honor the man who gave them their first break.

Singer and acclaimed theater actress May Bayot currently plays Elsa in HIMALA by TOUCHWORKX productions. Catch the musical version of the Nora Aunor film classic’s 10^th Anniversary run at PETA from March 15-March 24, 2013.

According to Direk Soxie Topacio, Nora Aunor herself after seeing the original run in 2003, said the songs written were ‘not for her’. Ate Guy’s voice is more honed for pop. The musical vocals, for lack of a better term, are operatic. Composer and Musical Director Vincent De Jesus intentionally did not want the music to be boxed into the usual pattern of a musical. De Jesus co wrote HIMALA also with legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

Nora Aunor herself admitted, the songs were not written for her, whose voice is more for pop music.

The role for Elsa in the musical necessitated the vocal prowess of May Bayot. Other roles are equally renowned vocally: Dulce (Aling Saling), Isay Alvarez (Nimia) and Cynthia Culig-Guico (Chayong). Isay Alvarez also stars in the upcoming KATY with Dulce, Epy Quizon and Gian Magdangal at the MERALCO Theater this month of May. May Bayot will also star in Tanghalang Pilipino’s production of STAGESHOW, the last masterpiece of playwright/actor/director Mario O’Hara this August.

May Bayot comes from an illustrious musical family. Her parents: Benjamin Bayot (operatic tenor), Esperanza Dimalanta (coloratura soprano) taught all their children to sing. Sister Lani Misalucha is now one of the more popular singers in Las Vegas, Karlyn is a TV actress while brothers Novi and Osi play the guitar and piano respectively.

In an interview May was able to talk about how she started out professionally, also with HIMALA musical director Vincent de Jesus, “I started 1990 I stopped 1994. Si Vincent continued with the group 1994 parang 8 years ata siya in Classico Supremo. Ang pangit di kami nagbigay ng pangalan (laughs). Para siyang Manhattan Transfer apat na boses keyboard double bass at flute.”

She came back from abroad to perform in a motown inspired female trio. That was before Acoustic Jive, which she was most identified with. “I was with them (Acoustic Jive) for 16 years. Now I have a new band TRAVELING LIGHT. Kasama ko pa rin si Romy Jorolan, Chong Santos on drums, Ernie Magtoto host of Session on 25th Street ng Net 25 on keyboards, Bobby Fidel dati ko rin ka banda yon. Ka bubuo lang a year ago.”

May revealed one of the biggest challenges in her life, “Ako marami akong pinagdaanan. Na stroke ako four years ago as in kalahati ng katawan ko left side affected. I’m still dealing with it may na tira siya e. Hindi na talaga magiging 100% ever. Sa akin it’s very relevant it’s very close to my heart because totoo yung message na ang himala nasa puso ng tao.”

For her she is living proof that miracles do happen, “If you want to find miracles you can see it everyday. May ginagawa ang Diyos na miracle every day. Yung buhay ko lang everyday is already a miracle. Ako, prognosis sakin I will not be able to walk properly. Di nako makaka function. After 3 months naka sampa uli ako sa banda ko. Naka gawa ako ng play so its paniniwala and you have to couple it with hard work. God makes miracles everyday. At the same time you are a partner with him making your own miracle.”

HIMALA the musical for May is one of many Filipino produced works that we as audiences should make sure to watch and support, “Gusto kong makita ng mga tao na magagaling tayong Pinoy na gumawa ng mga ganito. Di tayo kelangan pumunta sa Hong Kong para manood ng ‘Lion King’ o kung ano. Of course totally dfferent kind of entertainment but bago yon tayo muna. Red light shines on gyrating bodies on stage. Isay Alvarez as Nimia in HIMALA seems to recall a similar scene in Miss Saigon in London also scantily clad worker in a bar. Although here in HIMALA Nimia is promoted to Mama san. Isay Alvarez will next be in the lead role of KATY which will run at the MERALCO theater by May.

HIMALA the Musical is by TOUCHWORKX with May Bayot in the lead role of Elsa. You can catch the musical’s 10^th Anniversary run at PETA from March 15-March 24, 2013. Cynthia Culig-Guico, Dulce, Mia Reonal Bolaños, Kalila Aguilos, Bong Cabrera and Angeli Bayani are some of the other notable names in the production. Vincent De Jesus had the functions of composer and musical director and co wrote the songs with Ricky Lee.

Added to the original main cast are Viva Voce and the University of Santo Tomas Singers Alumni. Director Soxie Topacio said the expanded chorus was something that previous versions of the musical did not have. The first song “ Ang Eclipse at Ang Aparisyon” had a haunting effect when sung by Viva Voce and the UST Singer’s Alumni. They also added to the crowds and multitudes on stage, which the Film version was known for.

Legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee wrote the now classic film by Ishmael Bernal starring Nora Aunor. He spoke about the effect that the film and story itself has had , “Unang una HIMALA has lived for 30 years already and mukhang mabubuhay pa siya ng matagal. Whether you like it or not part na nung culture natin yung HIMALA e. Part na ng culture natin si Elsa. Part ng buhay natin yung topic ng play whether it’s a film or a stage production.”

He was all praises for this latest version of the musical by Director Soxie Topacio and Vincent de Jesus, “Its not really a full production it’s a concert so mas mabilis siya. Yung transitions mas smooth. The performance was really powerful. Sina Dulce sina May, si Isay very heartfelt yung performances nila.”

Lee however stated that the musical has advantages over the film, “Each production na ririnig  mo yung iringan nila, yung paghinga nila because its live. Na ririnig mo yung daing nila, na aamoy mo yung pawis nila, na kikita mo yung tears nila buhay na buhay sa harap mo. Unlike sa film, eto totoo. In away it’s more real.”

Lee relishes the unpredictability in theater, “The other thing is pag pinanuood mo siya, you know what’s going to happen at the same time you don’t know what’s going to happen. These are live performances anything can happen. Pwedeng iba ngayon si May Bayot, medyo iba bukas medyo iba sa susunod. Sakin it’s a very exciting thing.  No two performances are the same and thank God there’s multiplicity ng performances. Thank God you have Nora Aunor! Thank God you have May Bayot and thank God there will be other people who will perform that role in their own way na equally splendid. So masarap for a writer and HIMALA na bubuhay pa ulit ulit si Elsa sa iba ibang pagkatao. Sakin that’s more than enough kabayaran sa lahat ng hirap sa pag create ng material.”

The musical was also able to compensate for the loss of the multitudes on screen, “Parang opera sa akin it works. One good thing in the stage production, which I thought, would be difficult, sa pelikula isang malaking character yung masses e. The crowd all throughout it kept growing. Dito meron din siya. You can feel all the stages nung buhay ng community na nagsusuffer from belief to disbelief to disillusion and so yon nan dun din.”

May Bayot as Elsa has always performed up to the task of the role that made Nora Aunor a critically acclaimed actress. Lee goes on, “She’s very good. She was good then when it first came out. She’s still very good now. You can feel the pain. Painful in a positive sense, painful performance yung rendition niya. And ang complex complex ng HIMALA niya. You can feel all the facets ng emotion niya, pagkatao niya the doubts, the insecurities, the desire to be immortal, the vanity. At the same time the fragility na mimix niya lahat yon. And the voice, the voice is very pure.”

Nora Aunor (seen here in the film version) was more ‘pure and transcendental’ compared to May Bayot who was ‘complex, with all facets of emotion’ according to legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

When asked to compare May Bayot with Nora Aunor, Lee said it would be very unfair for both. Being in two different mediums its difficult to compare especially since the film was not a musical. “Describing each, Nora was very pure and transcendental. The purity is there, the movements the face, every bit of her being nandun. Ang pure niya she’s one whole mystic being. On the other hand si May, without comparing or putting either one down, she’s complex. She’s left and right, black and white, rough and polished. I don’t want to compare because the film was asking for something else than the stage production.

The style and presence of both actors were different, “Si May is a leading being in the production. Si Nora was leading in a pure way, which is also good. That’s what the film set out to do. The set was very minimalist. Yon ang philsophical inclination ng film so tama lang doon e. Iba naman ang pinupuntahan so I don’t want to compare. And I hope that you don’t compare the two to be fair to both. Tatay (Tirso Cruz III): Aasa ka sa mga sinsilyong pinupukol ng mga manonood? E ikaw nga’y pinagkait ng Diyos ng na tatanging kagandahan! Pagkatapos kung kumilos ka masahol ka pa sa mga lalakeng kalaro mo sa labas? Sa araw araw na ginawa ka ng Diyos gumugulpi ka ng kalaro? Pagkatapos aasa kang kikita ka ng pera sa palakpak ng tao?  Batang Katy (Yedda Lambujon): Di naman na dadaan sa ganda yan e. Ang panggulat ko ay ang aking (screams) boooseees!

Calling Katy precocious as an 8 year old is an understatement. If she were born these days she’d be diagnosed as a hyperactive kid. Instead she became known as the kid with a powerful voice and moxy, lots of moxy. Even at a very young age, Katy Dela Cruz knew she was destined to perform. KATY the Musical is the portrayal of her colorful, tragic and lyrical life. The era is from the heyday of bodabil, jazz, swing and bebop. The passion for music is what shines through in KATY that entices us to look and never forget. It runs from January 17-27, 2013 at the CCP.

Everyone who has seen it has universally praised Isay Alvarez in the lead role. Even those who caught the original version of the production have given Isay the thumbs up. Cinemalaya Competition Head Laurice Guillen said, “The cast did really great especially Isay. I know Mitch (Valdes) is really a great performer. Pero yung work ni Isay rito may pain, feel na feel ko siya. Mitch is known as full of humor and lightness.”

Mitch Valdes was in the title role in the original 1987 production of KATY. Director Nestor U. Torre is back to for this version as well. The music by Ryan Cayabyab and Librettist Jose Javier Reyes brings out the best in the cast today as it did then. There’s the vocals of Gian Magdangal. Epy Quizon exhibited dancing skills playing the role of his real life father Dolphy. Aicelle Santos was dazzling as the young Katy on the cusp of stardom.

Among recent productions KATY has a strong parallelism with STAGESHOW written by Mario O’Hara who passed away last year. KATY however, predates STAGESHOW by 2 decades or so. Both musicals honor the forgotten stars of the Philippine theater.

KATY’s advantage is Ryan Cayabyab’s music. STAGESHOW has the playful humor of Mario O’Hara. Although Joey Reyes dialogue also delivers laughs, O’Hara’s comedic wit is still funnier. It was O’Hara’s intention to make tragedy funny where, humor is just alternated from the heavy dramatic scenes in KATY. STAGESHOW will once again have a run on August in CCP.

Cayabyab’s music necessitated powerful vocals which Isay Alvarez (Senior KATY) and Aicelle Santos (Teen Katy) very capably delivered. The most poignant vocal performance and music was the duet of Aicelle and Dulce who was in the role of Olivia the Diva. The song is MINSAN ANG MINAHAL AY AKO, which expresses the pain of losing the adulation of an audience by a fading star.

Apart from the title role of Katy Dela Cruz the musical is a very intriguing look at some characters who are based on real life people. Most audiences today remember Mary Walter (CJ Mangahis) in a lot of grandmother roles, with her shock of white hair and raspy voice. She’s had countless film roles from horror to dramas and was a lifetime achievement awardee from both the FAMAS and the Urian. KATY reveals a young sexy starlet version of Mary. For most of us it’s hard to imagine Mary Walter in floozy roles and a sexy Hawaiian dancer in grass skirt.

KATY turns back the clock to when they were all young. While, Gloria Romero turns into Heart Evangelista to seduce Geoff Eigenman in Forever by GMA 7, KATY takes audience through one person’s life. Making them the time traveller.

Not a lot of people may be aware that Mary Walter, Mitch Valdes and KATY lyricist Joey Reyes were connected even before the musical. Considered as one of the best Filipino films of all time the Cinema One film fest recently screened the digitally restored version of ORO PLATA MATA by Peque Gallaga.

It was released in 1976 and even then Mary Walter already had her shock of white hair as the aging yaya of a nubile, barely out of her adolescence Cherie Gil. Incidentally, 1987 KATY lead star Mitch Valdes also figured prominently in ORO as the liberated doctor who came back from America. Before the screening, it was revealed by direk Peque that it was screenwriter Jose Javier Reyes who coined the name of the film.

The three friends of KATY apart from Mary were rounded out by Tricia Amper Jimenez as Hannah San and Celine Fabie as Patsy Patochay. Their performances were key as they had a lot of scenes with both male and female leads. Their number with Gian Magdangal was also memorable with the trio of Mary, Patsy and Hanna tries to seduce the dashing Peping with a sexy but playful song and dance.

Strong credit must be given to musical director Mel Villena and the Asosasyon Ng Pilipinong Musikero (AMP). They executed the music composed by Cayabyab not just with perfection but more of the enthusiasm and emotion that the story required.

KATY Producer Robert Seña gave a lot of credit to Fanny Serrano who designed the costumes as well as the hair and make up for the whole show. Katy Dela Cruz’ passion and love for music is evident not just in the performance but in the artistry and generosity of everyone involved in the staging if this version.

Mario O’Hara was a creative force whose career spanned different fields as radio talent, to TV, film and theater. As writer he has been involved in some of the greatest Filipino films ever made  “Tinimbang ka Ngunit Kulang”, “Insiang” both directed by Lino Brocka and “Condemned” by Jose Javier Reyes. Mario directed Nora Aunor in “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” and most recently in TV5’s “Sa Ngalan Ng Ina.”

Tanghalang Pilipino will show O’Hara’s last written script for theater “STAGESHOW.” The prestigious production honoring the stars of yesteryears will open the 4^th National Theater festival running from November 7-18, 2012. O’Hara passed away last June 26 at the age of 66.

The 4^th National Theater festival also features prodcutions from around the Phil. such as Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation Inc. from the province of Bulacan, Bohol Antequera and Maribojoc Cultural Collectives in cooperation with Teatro Bol-Anon from the province of Bohol, cultural activist Carlos Celdran, Dulaang UP of the University of the Philippines, Gantimpala Theater Foundation, Integrated Performing Arts Guild of Mindanano State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University Kabpapagariya Ensemble from General Santos City, Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), Sipat Lawin Ensemble, Tanghalang Ateneo of Ateneo de Manila University, Tanghalang Pilipino, The Xavier Stage of Cagayan de Oro and Trumpets Inc. Tanghalang Pilipino Artistic Director Nanding Josef shared the circumstances of how he got the script, “About 3 years ago, Mario gave me the script of STAGESHOW. I was surprised. Binigay niya sakin, sabi ko Ano to? He said ‘Basahin mo lang baka sakaling magawa’. But at that time we already had the line up for the CCP.”

This year was the perfect timing for in terms of theme. “I had it read by Chris Millado the director of STAGESHOW now and also our actor’s company. And Chris loved his comedy and found the play really touching. Pero hindi pa namin pwedeng isali. It was only last year that we decided to include it in our theater season na ang theme ay truth and consequence. Sabi ni Mario ‘bagay na bagay dahil naka base sa tunay na buhay itong mga characters’ na mapapanood niyo.”

A lot of the story is relatable even to performers of today, “So bigay na bigay sa ating craft pero di nakapaghanda sa future. Apektado ang love life ang pamilya etc. Mario captured that in this script. He said, ‘Gusto ko itong ma isulat bago ako mamatay.’ I never thought that he was sick at that time.”

He also enumerated the artists Mario and TP intended to honor with STAGESHOW, “Ito ay alay natin sa mga katulad ni Tito Dolphy, Pilita Corales, Tita Gloria Sevilla, Bayani Casimiro, Elizabeth Ramsey, Sylvia La Torre, Eddie San Jose, Lupito, Patsy, Pugo, Bentot, Tugak, Pugak, Apeng Daldal, Aruray, Eddie Mesa, Reycard Duet, Casmot, Balot at marami pang iba.”

Josef also could not help but express a little bit of his envy and frustration over the popularity of another musical also in the same venue, “Dito po sana may dumating pang iba. Hirap na hirap po kaming magbenta kahit na ang ticket namin ay ka piranggot kung ikukumpara sa ticket ng Phantom of the Opera. Maganda naman po talaga yung palabas. Pero masasabi niyo pagkatapos ng show tignan ko lang kung di sabihin na ang gagaling ng artistang Pilipino.”

Gloria Sevilla

In the mid 60’s versatile actress and singer Gloria Sevilla aka Queen of Visayan movies became a lead star in Clover Theater’s ‘Musical Extravaganza.’ It was produced by Don Jose Zara who was the original Master Showman. Other stars included Bobby Gonzales, Tommy Angeles, Coca Apajar, Yolanda Guevarra, Ric Manrique and Fred Panopio. Sevilla was also tapped to perform at the Manila Grand Opera House.

German Moreno born October 14, 1940

His parents are Jose Moreno and Aurora Molina. Graduating from the Balagtas Elementary School in Bulacan Moreno enrolled at various schools in Manila whie working to earn his keep. At 14, he was a janitor and errand boy to impresario Don Jose Zarah at the Clover Theater. There as telonero (crustain raiser), he experienced first hand the workings of the stage. He later became an assistant stage manager.

He later went on to pursue and acting career as a comedian of the bodabil stage and postwar movies. In the 1970’s he became the host of ‘GMA Supershow’ and the rest is history.  He produced and hosted That’s Entertainment and currently Walang Tulugan Master Showman. Through the process he discovered many of the now popular stars in television and movie industry.

Pilita Corales born in Manila August 22, 1939

Pilita appeared in stageshows at the Manila Grand Opera House and sang profesionally in the Philippines and abroad. She has performed withinternationally known artists as the front act in the concerts of Sammy Davis Jr, in Las Vegas. She also fronted for the Beatles in  at the Rizal Memorial stadium in 1966 and as a gues in live shows of Bob Hope, Pat Boone, Frank Sinatra and Julie Andrews.

Elizabeth Ramsey (50 years in showbiz)

Born in San Carlos City, Negros Oriental. At age 16 she started singing with a band travelling from town to town in feistas throughout the island of Negros. She sang wit a 26 piece band, earning P3 or P4 a night.

Moving to Manila in 1958 she was in apopular TV show Student Center, after which she was offered a slot the Manila Grand Opera House. After a short stint she moved to Don Jose Zarah’s Clover Theater. Ramsey spent a glorious 7 years at the Clover as Queen of Rock and Roll.

She performed free of charge to the National Press Club and for the US veterans Office later for US Soldiers in American bases here in the Philippines and wounded American Veterans. She performed in Vegas and acts like Sammy Davis Jr. and Harry Belafonte. She also performed for Filipino communities while abroad.

Bayani Casimiro born in San Pablo Laguna July 16, 1918 a comedian of the Sarswela and the Komedya

At age 7 he entered show business as a clown and a comedian earning 50 centavos for his act. He loved to dance particularly tapdancing and won in na competition in Teatro ZOrilla. In 1936 he visited Hawaii as part of the performing troupe headed by Sarswela queen Atang Dela Rama. He later became a part of Lou Salvador’s Stageshows. As a tap dancer he became known as the “Fred Astaire of the Philippines.”

DOLPHY born in Tondo Manila, July 25, 1928

Dolphy started as a young bodabil dancer and singer at the Orient theater during the Japanese occupation. In bodabil he parlayed his natural talent for for comedy into one of the most successful acts in Phil showbusiness. He was known as ‘Golay’, the dancing partner of Bayani Casimiro.

He started performing on stage during the Japanese occupation. He was turning 17 when he got a job as adancer for a month at the Avenue Theater and subsequently on Lyric Theater. He also appeared at the Prient Theater. During air raids, they would interrupt the show and run for the air raid shelter in the orchestra section together with the audience. If no bomb exploded the show resumed.

Mario O’Hara April 20, 1946-June 26, 2012

Mario was born in Zamboanga City on April 20, 1946, His mother was Basilia Herrero who has Spanish lineage and hails from Ozamis Oriental. His father Jaime O’Hara was the son of Irish American Thomasite. Jaime himself was a member of the U.P. Dramatic Club.

The O’Hara’s moved to a middle class community in Pasay City; behind their house was a slum area and Mario claimed that some of his works were inspired by the real life incidents that happened in this area.

At age 17 he auditioned for a radio show sponsored by Procter and Gamble. He then decided to stop attending his classes as a Chemical Engineering student in Adamson University to concentrate on radio. He was able to get a job with the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) and DZRH.

Later on he joined PETA as a stage actor and worked with Lino Brocka as a writer.He wrote Brocka’s Tinimbang Ka Ngunit kulang about life in a small town. He also wrote a teleplay which became the basis for Brocka’s Insiang which is about a woman raped by her stepfather.   He claimed it was inspired by a real story, which happened in the slums behind their backyard. Soon, Mario became known as a writer for his sense of realism and social messages.

The Tres Dahlias, Angelina Kanapi (Chabeng), Mae Paner (Magdea) and Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino (Ester) talk about the hard times they have fallen into after their glory days on stage. Ester forces Magdea to talk about her job in the dark corners of cinemas:

Magdea: Trabahong kamay lang. Sa kaliwa meron akong alcohol, sa kanan meron akong toilet paper. Pagkatapos tinatabihan ko ang mga nagsosolong lalaki sa dilim. Tapos naka ngiti kong sasabihin, bossing gusto mo ba patigasin ko ang iyong saging? Sa beto beto ako ay matinik. Sari saring mga saging Lakatan, ang daming señorita. Pero meron din naman mga sabaaah! Di ko makalimutan yung isang customer yon po ang saging na walang puso.

Ester: Patapusin mo na! (Man beside her moans Ahh! Ahh! Ahh! Oooooohhh!) Magdea: Pero wala naman kaming kinitang tatlo, hanggang ngayon kayod marino pa rin kami. She talks about getting gold and jewelry only to sell it for needs of relatives such as ‘operasyon ng loslos ni lolo’ and many more. Magdea: Sabi nga ni Chichay pare-pareho lang buhay naming lahat.

One can go through life and look at it either as a tragedy or a comedy. Mario O’Hara chose to look at the most tragic and difficult things in life and turned them into something funny, if not as a source of entertainment. When he wrote STAGESHOW he chose to give homage to the lives of Filipino artists from a bygone era. Most of these incredibly talented and dedicated performers did not gain financial security although they did have fame. STAGESHOW by Mario O’Hara will open the Natl. In so doing, O’Hara also chronicled a very accurate slice of Filipino life. We Filipinos love to laugh, sing and dance in the midst of greatest tragedies. It may be what makes us so resilient. So STAGESHOW might as well be our story as a people. Even when audiences of today can only pick out one, two or three performers from the past whom they recognize, the dramas, pains, humor, their individual stories are all something we can relate to. It is hilariously provocative and the story will remain with you til memory fades.

STAGESHOW was the last script written by Mario O’Hara for the theater before he passed away in June of this year. While he created the blue print for a successful show, putting the elements together was another thing altogether. Director Chris Millado realized he needed to put a very good team to produce it. Millado is himself a veteran of many shows from Tanghalang Pilipino, PETA, NohSPace San Francisco, Kumu Kahua Theater Honolulu and many more. One of the major challenges was the transition from one scene to the next. He was able to solve this ingeniously with live costume changes. They also become a statement in the changes that occur within the character.

Apart from that he was able to get Choreographer Denisa Reyes who showed her creativity in telling stories through dance and movement. There were a few scenes that did not have dialogue and relied heavily on movement. And often dance was the best way to visualize and appreciate what the previous dialogue was saying.

There’s no other way for example, to act out fast forwarding scenes or time travel than through hunching down, pumping fists on the side and the whole cast accelerating action in the story. Again it was both hilarious and ingenious, not unlike what our playwright was in real life. You have no idea how funny a dance sequence can be until they start throwing a (fake) baby around in the middle of it. The comedy comes just as much from the physical slapstick as it is from the snappy jokes.

It is difficult not to fall in love with real life married couple Nonie and Shamaine Buencamino who are at the lead roles of Tirso and Esther. Both the choreography and vocals are very challenging which they pulled off with aplomb. Roder Camañag and Liesl Batucan also in the lead roles were just as effective. Sex has never been THIS funny. These four actors were able to show genuine love and made people laugh at the same time.

There were many great performances from the whole cast. Lou Veloso played despicable characters from a corrupt Mayor to a hobo-rapist. Speaking of which, Veloso is running under Mayor Lim’s ticket as Vice Mayor in real life for the local elections next year.

Multi awarded playwright, screenwriter Rody Vera performed as 1950’s matinee idol Bobby Gonzalez. I was also particularly impressed by Vera’s performance as comedian Bentot who acts like a toddler (that was his shtick). I was not able to see Gonzalez but I remember watching black and white reruns of Bentot’s old movies in GMA 7 as a kid. Vera got the voice and the distinctive walk, which was really hilarious.

Jonathan Tadioan (Jimboy) and Pamela Hundana (Dulce) are the crazy siblings born into the performer’s life. The chorus composed of Agnes Sarreal, Hazel Maranan, Kaye Garcia and April Iñigo were very eyecatching in their negligee scenes with Nonie Buencamino (Tirso). They even had a rocketts-like dance sequence no man can forget. The scene is not unlike Jet Pangan’s in “Nine” where he was surrounded by hot actresses like Menchu Lauchngco-Yulo, Cherie Gil and Eula Valdez.

The Dawn’s 25^th anniversary concert held recently at the Eastwood Central Plaza was made extra special when Jett Pangan’s son Raphael joined them on stage as guitarist. He has already grown as tall as his famous dad at only 12 years old. Nicknamed Raffy, he skillfully played guitars on an extended version of, “Love Will Set Us Free”. He then played the sentimental and apt “Tulad ng Dati” which was also the title of their film directed by Mike Sandejas for Cinemalaya.

The concert was organized by Jam 88.3 as part of the 7^th Jam Music Fest together with other bands that paid tribute to The Dawn such as: Imago,Sandwich, Peryodiko, 6 Cycle Mind, Rivermaya, General Luna and top solo performers like Ebe Dancel and Nyoy Volante.

One of the VIPs in attendance was Lea Salonga with husband Rob Chen. Salonga who is a close friend of Jett and the band, was able to talk about the touching moment. “I saw Raffy since 5 years old. It’s interesting to see that a torch was being passed. But we don’t know if he’s going to take this professionally or do this as a hobby, we don’t know if he’s going to pick up the mantle that his father is occupying.”

Even without the prompting of anyone Raffy picked up the guitar and practiced by himself for hours on end. Jett Pangan proudly said, “It’s the greatest feeling in the world. If you’re a father anything your son does you’ll be proud of as long as it’s a good thing. He wants to be a rock star but he also wants to be a quantum physicist. I’m not kidding. Let’s see.” Both Jett and mom Beth are happy with whatever he decides to choose to get into.

Salonga was also able to talk about her experience with Jett as her guest in her concert “Your Song”, “Our production manager who had also worked with him in musical theater said the minute he comes out on stage that entire place is just gona explode! The minute he appeared I thought the PICC’s roof was gonna fall in. All of these people who were watching my concert had a deep love for The Dawn for them to respond to him in such a big way.”

Salonga being a music icon herself was no stranger to rousing ovations. But harnessing the energy of a rock concert was something new to her, “Being on stage with him for that one number gave me the feeling of what it was like to be him for five minutes. And it’s amazing, for five minutes it was a rock concert. I have no fear of Jett we’ve been friends for a very long time. It was helpful that I wasn’t intimidated by his presence and by his talent or how powerful he is on stage. It was actually a lot of fun.” Jett was a special guest together with Dulce and Bituin in “Ryan Cayabyab and Friends” at the Resorts World concert series last June 28.

The Dawn co wrote and performed a special single with Raymond Marasigan (of Sandwich) to celebrate their 25^th anniversary entitled “9,125”. The song according to Pangan was already finished and will soon be played in Jam 88.3. A tribute album of The Dawn classics entitled “Enveloped Ideas” was launched at The Hard Rock Café in Glorietta, June 30, 2011. The album will feature the hottest indie bands such as Techy Romantics, Enemies of Saturn, Join the Club, Lip service, Ginoong Vitalis, The Disco Ball, Happy Days Ahead, Overtone, Flying Ipis, Gun Monkeys, Switch, Rubberpool, Milk and Money, Soft Pillow Kisses and Playphonics.
