Irene Escolar (Diana Suárez) was surrounded by more than two dozen microphones. It was both an audition and a test of chemistry between cast members. Everyone was wearing headphones and could hear every minute sound and breath between them.

On cue Antonio Banderas (Felix) walks up to her and says, “I’m sorry I may have an erection. And I’m also sorry, if I don’t get an erection, nothing personal.” He takes her face in his hands and passionately kisses her, with their mouths wide open, tongues and all. The intense kiss lasts for almost a minute, unbearably for Executive Producer José Luis Gómez (Humberto Suárez) as it was his daughter.

Then suddenly Director Penelope Cruz (Lola) shouts “Okay, okay, okay! Thank you Felix. Ivan, shall we go with you? ” Oscar Martínez (Iván Torres) walks up to her, says meekly, “Forgive me.” And he kisses her passionately also with tongue and mouths wide open. This time it barely lasts a few seconds when Lola stops them. “Okay, okay, okay! The poor man has been married to the same woman for 28 years and it shows,” When Felix laughs Lola says, “Don’t you laugh, you don’t convey much either.”

Lola walks up to Diana and asks “Do you mind?” Lola gives a quick stare at both actors. “Look.” At first she gives small kisses, on the chin, the cheeks and built up the passion. Then came a torrent kiss with their mouths open. Both women were heaving and grabbing each other lost in the moment. Humberto’s eyes widened until he couldn’t bare it. The two women were so lost in their passion. Lola tears off Diana’s jacket and they both fall to the floor still kissing and humping. Humberto, stood up and walked out, “I forgot something at work. I have to go. It’s all fantastic… Iha… excelente, tell me about it later.”

Competencia Oficial is a satire of the creative process for film. Not just of film making but the whole system, international film fests, what people consider to be artistic or not. What do we consider as a good piece of film? What is a worthy piece of literature? Even the great divide between theater and cinema is dealt with, which is better or inferior? What’s commercial work, what is real acting, even to the point of questioning art itself.

Nitty Gritty of Acting

After buying the rights to a critically acclaimed novel, they have their story of pain and emotional growth between two brothers. Enter Lola Cuevas played by Penelope Cruz, the most awarded director they could find. She insists on casting the best as well for the roles: Antonio Banderas (Felix Rivero) and Oscar Martinez (Ivan Torres). Two actors poles apart in background and their acting methods.

Manolo Solo plays Matías, the billionaire’s Executive Assistant and adviser. Solo was also in EL BUEN PATRON with Javier Bardem, which is a part of the Spanish Film fest too.

Written and directed by Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat, the movie is about rehearsals, the nitty gritty of acting pre-production. Fascinating look at the inner-workings of director and cast. Especially the extreme methods that Lola employs to get the best out of them. Everyone inside and outside of showbiz should watch it. Admittedly it is a bizarre version of reality. In spite of this you’ll still get a far better understanding and appreciation for what actors do. It also explores the role of the director in leading the story, how to motivate the actor’s best performance, even in this extreme example.

Penelope Cruz has been the quintessential Spanish beauty the world has idealized. As Lola, her hair is so curly it looks like an afro. Penelope is so hot, even her armpits are sexy, with matching afro curls there too. Needless to say, this is unlike any other role she has played. Her looks are supposed to indicate her intellect, vision. Apart from that is courage and audacity in challenging her cast in so many ways. The depth of psychological games Lola plays can at times be mind boggling.

Initially you’d think it’s about the rivalry between Felix and Ivan. But is actually more than that. It’s the tug of war, creatively, professionally between the three of them including Lola.

In an interview with Sergio Burstein of the L.A. Times, she claimed the cast was laughing so hard they had to do retakes, “The biggest difficulty was that you had to cut many times due to one of us laughing, including the directors and members of the production team, because this is one of those intelligent comedies that are not made frequently.”

According to Cruz her approach was a combination of different people in several creative fields not just filmmakers, “The way she looked was very important, because she’s kind of a scarecrow who’s making a ‘statement’ all the time, from the clothes she wears to the way she combs her hair to the way she walks. Deep down, I see her as a scared girl.”

Antonio Banderas may have some semblance with his role in Felix Rivero. They both have successful Hollywood careers and have a high profile presence. Felix, however, can fall into that category of being a Hollywood jerk. Which Banderas plays with panache and humor. He is unapologetic in his superficiality, pursuit of fame, meaningless sex and sports cars. The good thing about Felix is he doesn’t even pretend to be an artist. For him it’s all about technique, less internalization. As long as he gets the job done, remembers his lines, cry on cue, walks to his spot, he’s happy.

Banderas is one of those actors, I actually learned about in college. His Hollywood debut MAMBO KINGS (1992) was one of the movies we were made to watch in DLSU by Dr. Mike Rapatan. Women were swooning with Banderas’ magnetic Spanish looks and accent. I’m sure quite a few men too.

He also made several gay roles famous for Almodovar in the 1980s. That was when there were far fewer gay roles in cinema. And also as Tom Hanks’ lover in PHILADELPHIA (1993). That film won Hanks an Oscar for playing Andrew Beckett who was fired after employers found out he was stricken with AIDS.

Since then he’s built a stellar resume of film credits. Not to mention showing off his vocals (and tango skills) in the live musical EVITA (1996) and Andrew Lloyd Webber Tribute – Phantom duet with Sarah Brightman in 1998.

Except for Hollywood success, Banderas couldn’t be more different than his role Felix. Banderas started out in theater from his hometown in Malaga, Spain. He was arrested several times because of censorship rule under General Francisco Franco. Those stage performances however, caught the eye of Pedro Amlodovar who cast him in several of his films and incidentally also discovered Penelope Cruz.

Banderas and Cruz were never cast together until Almodovar’s PAIN AND GLORY (2019). They still however did not share a scene until OFFICIAL COMPETITION. One of his recent projects was GENIUS: PICASSO (2018), his dream role. Pablo was his hero growing up in Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace.

Oscar Martinez

Oscar Martinez has a very eminent career that spans TV, theater and film. He is one of the most respected thespians in Argentina and Spain. He won his Volpi Cup (from Venice) with directors Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat’s THE DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN (2019). The movie is about a Nobel Prize winning novelist living in Europe who returns to his hometown in Argentina.

Oscar Martinez here plays Ivan, a true artist who believes in the message he conveys. He shuns the glitz and glamor that show business brings and would rather focus on the performance. Because Felix is the complete opposite of all this, he looks down on him. Ivan not only looks down on Felix but all audiences who cater to his movies. Ivan looks down at everyone who doesn’t consume what he believes to be artistic movies, music and literature.

Cohn and Duprat who are also the screenwriters here, poke fun at their own Argentinian roots. In one scene Felix complains to Lola, ‘When you get an actor don’t get one who needs this whole circus. Plus, he has an Argentinian accent. 20 years in Spain and he still has the accent!’

In an interview with David Martos at the 78^th Venice film festival, Oscar talked about the special public scrutiny actors undergo. “We have to be able to make fun of ourselves. The movie acts like a magnifying glass, zooming on all of our flaws, our insecurities and our vanity. We actors are very insecure, even if the audience won’t believe it. We suffer from chronic insecurity. In spite of my flaws, I don’t think my character is similar to me, somehow. But I recognize the environment and the themes approached.”

Martinez believes the theme is universal, “The movie doesn’t just make fun of the work of the actor. Like every good movie, the main theme is just a pretext to talk about the human being. Vanity, insecurities and problems, we find all this in other professions. Competitiveness belongs to any job, more or less. But other jobs aren’t placed under the magnifying glass.”

Madrid Architecture

When you say Madrid as a film location, one would think of the medieval or renaissance architecture seen everywhere in Spain and Europe. But for this movie, Cohn and Gaston decided to show the more modern architecture Madrid is also known for.

Actually there were a handful of locations around Madrid that could very well be a landmark for tourists as more people see OFFICIAL COMPETITION. But I’m referring to their main location, where a majority of the scenes were shot.

In the film it was supposed to be the home base of the billionaire Humberto Suarez. They did a great job making it appear as a sprawling and impressive facility owned by his company. The modern interiors, with large rooms bare walls, of glass, concrete and marble made the performers stand out. In this case Cruz, Banderas and Martinez. There was almost nothing to distract you from them as the viewer, as most of it were flat surfaces.

In reality it was the Teatro Auditorio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial (The Auditorium Theater of San Lorenzo de El Escorial), a town 60km away from Madrid. Not surprisingly the home of theatrical performances, which also houses multipurpose event spaces, perfect for… rehearsals and acting exercises. Constructed in 2006, ‘exterior cladding was made of granite stone which over time can acquire the hue of typical of historic buildings of the town San Lorenzo de El Escorial’ from: Comunidad de Madrid

Other locations include: Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport, La Neomudéjar Museum, Avant-garde Arts Centre, and in the Intercontinental Hotel in the Paseo de la Castellana. Filming took place on the public thoroughfare outside the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid and on Gran Vía Avenue, which was set up with a large and wide red carpet made to simulate the one at Cannes film festival.
