The catchy, fast paced rhymes by singing duo Thyro Alfaro & Yumi Lacsamana did it for a second time around. This time may be sweeter as they are both songwriter and performer on the track TRIANGULO with featured artist Jeric Medina. TRIANGULO won the 1 million grand prize in the PHILPOP 2015 finals night held at the MERALCO Theater last July 25, 2015. The duo also won the grand prize in 2013 for writing /composing DATI performed by Sam Concepcion & Tippy Dos Santos.

PHILPOP is the premiere songwriting competition in the country attracting nearly 9,000 entries, from Filipinos all over the world.

Coming in at first runner up is PARATINGIN MO NA SIYA by singer songwriter Davey Langit which has a P500,000 cash prize. Second runner up is SA IBANG MUNDO written and composed by Mark Villar performed by Kean Cipriano and Nadine Lustre, which has a P250,000 cash prize. The up-tempo pop rock sound of SA IBANG MUNDO also earned it PEOPLE’S CHOICE award with a P100,000 cash prize from Maynilad.

Elements Music Camp

Interestingly enough there are a total of 6 people in the finalist- songwriters and performers who attended the Elements Music Camp. Grand prizewinners Thyro & Yumi along with featured artist Jeric Medina and First Runner Up Davey Langit were alumni. Two time finalist and former TV5 actress Lara Maigue (NASAAN) and Ramiro Mataro (WALANG HANGGAN) were also graduates of the intensive course.

Elements according to its website “brings together aspiring and professional singer-songwriters to bond and learn from one another. For five days, there will be lectures, group presentations, case studies, and a lot of breakout sessions.” Conducted in Dumaguete, it features established artists as mentors such as Gabby Alipe of Urbandub, Ebe Dancel, Gloc-9, Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar, Jungee Marcelo, Jazz Nicolas of Itchyworms, Raimund Marasigan, Gerard Salonga, Aia de Leon, Jay Durias, Alex Lim, Audie Gemora, and many more. There are a total of 60 slots available for those interested in attending, application period is until August 31, 2015.

Catchy, Relaxed and Confident

What eventually won it for Thyro & Yumi is how they were able to craft a catchy song describing the chaos of a love triangle. The Dawn vocalist Jett Pangan was part of the panel of judges in the finals he said, “I think the judges were unanimous in declaring their song as being so damn catchy. Their relaxed, confident performance also contributed to the goosebump factor.” 40% of the judging is done before the finals night another 60% is done on the awards night itself.

The very prestigious panel of judges includes: Maynilad CFO Randolph Estrellado, Quest rapper (aka Jose Villanueva III), Karylle, Louie Ocampo, Jett Pangan, Kris Lawrence and Paolo Valenciano. Kris Lawrence, Karylle and Quest were performers in previous PHILPOP Finals. Louie Ocampo is one of the premiere Musical directors.

For Yumi Lacsamana just being able to perform their song this year was enough of a reward by itself. The first time they won it they were songwriters of DATI and was interpreted by Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos with rapper Quest. She said, “Wala sa amin ang kumpetisyon it’s more of participating. It’s more of celebrating OPM together. Doon pa lang interpreting our own work is a big deal. Nanalo na kami doon pa lang. Kasi yon lang naman ang gusto namin. The opportunity to interpret our own work, doon pa lang tumigil na kaming makipag laban. Nag enjoy na lang kami after nung na laman naming kami mag interpret.”

Thyro also noted that experiencing PHILPOP Finals before also helped, “Siguro number one is the experience kasi, kumbaga sa NBA Finals naka rating na kami. Hindi sa pagmamayabang pero kanina di kami masyadong kinabahan e. Di kami ganoon nag eexpect this year kasi.”

Davey Langit’s Humor & Longing

Jett Pangan’s unique position of being the front man of one of the most iconic Pinoy rock bands and a rich history of performance in musicals and plays gives him a great insight on this contest. PHILPOP Exec. Dir Ryan Cayabyab was instrumental in tapping Jett as one of the panelist.

Jett described first runner up winner PARATINGIN MO NA SIYA , “Whoever went into the top 3 caught the hearts during the pre-judging and our hearts as well as judges. Davey’s song is a genius blend of humor and longing. Being bred in the school of hard knocks, I was never big on singing or songwriting contests. But I have to say; I couldn’t be happier accepting Mr. C’s invite to be one of the judges. It opened my eyes to the immense talent of the young artists who join PHILPOP. They really bolster confidence in OPM.”

Davey Langit is also a popular radio DJ for Pinas FM 95.5. The station has long been a supporter of OPM being the only station to play Pinoy music 100% of the time. Davey played the guitar and interpreted his own song PARATINGIN MO NA SIYA. He had a prestigious group that backed him up in Baihana, which definitely added some vocal dimension that night.

Thyro thought PARATINGIN MO NA SIYA was a strong candidate even before the finals. He also liked APAT NA BUWANG PASKO by Gino Cruz & Jeff Arcilla. The track was interpreted by comedian Jon Santos who just finished a successful stint as Auntie in RWM’s BITUING WALANG NINGNING. The hit musical will have a second run this October at the New Port Performing Arts Theater in Resort’s World Manila.

Thyro gave a word of thanks to Pangilinan, “MVP is one of the driving forces of PHILPOP. Without him it wouldn’t be as successful as this. It’s inspiring that someone like MVP helps people like us. Most of the time people like us don’t get recognized. They only recognize either the song or the artist. On January 25, 2015 members of the Special Action Force (PNP) initiated an operation to arrest and capture Zulkifli Abdhir (aka Marwan). A Malaysian national, Marwan is said to be one of the leaders of the Jemaah Islamiyah or JI. The organization is responsible for 2002 Bali bombings and many other attacks in South Eastern Asia. SAF officers engaged and neutralized Marwan in a hut at Tukanalipao, Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

While the firefight ensued, it attracted the attention of MILF (Moro Islamic and Liberation Force) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). Unable to bring the whole body of Marwan, SAF cut off his finger for DNA testing in order to verify the identity. SAF were then attacked by MILF and BIFF armed groups. This resulted in the 44 deaths and 16 on the side of the MILF and BIFF. 14 members of the SAF sustained injuries and all of them who returned suffered the trauma of seeing their comrades killed in battle. Civilians were also reported to have been part of the casualties with 7 killed. An outcry for those who passed away in the incident followed.

Five days after on January 30, 2015 was FUSION, the First Philippine Music Festival at the MOA concert grounds. A great number of musicians paid tribute to the #Fallen44 through their performances. The touching tribute for the SAF 44 was very timely and relevant showing the power of music in highlighting the loss and suffering of our men in uniform.

Instead of it merely being a powwow for OPM (Original Pilipino Music/ Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mangaawit), they were able to deal with a burning issue of our time that exploded just days before the concert. The script, effects, choreography were all prepared for months in advance and yet artists were more than willing to adapt their performances to honor those who have fallen.

The SAF44 were honored as heroes upon their return.

An actual song written and composed for the heroism of our Filipino soldiers in the future should be produced. Another event with that concept in mind where artists record the music could perform it live. Proceeds from ticket sales and CDs sold could benefit the families of those who lost loved ones and the SAF members who survived. This is a call not just for our artists and musicians but also our Recoding companies and concert producers who can get together for this cause. MORE importantly our young people should get behind it buying Filipino music, singing for something we all believe in.

This is the transformative power of music, where it can positively influence lives and bring to light issues that are important to us. Who can forget BAYAN KO by Freddie Aguilar and how it unified our people’s struggle for democracy?

For FUSION 6CycleMind came in with black armbands. Vocalist Tuti Caringal had camouflage pants and dog tags. He dedicated SANDALAN to those who fell in Mamasapano. Although the song is a fast paced rock song it speaks of a painful time in one’s life to the point of crying. There are no hard and fast solutions it’s only us being there for one another that will ease the pain of loss. Thinking about it the song was perfect in this context especially with the lyrics.

Kyla dedicated her hit SALBABIDA. Our fallen heroes were the rock that sustained their families both emotionally and financially. The title translates to Lifesaver.

Gloc 9 in his spiel talked about the equality of people prior to his song SIRENA: “Kristyano, Muslim, sundalo, sibilyan mayaman o mahirap, bakla o tomboy, parepereho lang tayo.”

Song choice is crucial but almost exactly to the word Bamboo’s hit since a decade ago was very descriptive of what happened in the Mamapasano clash. It generally speaks of the oppression of the poor but the verse where fields/rural areas Bamboo’s TATSULOK almost predicted exactly what happened in the clash.

Gary Valenciano has always been known for his faith inspired songs. But his hit IPAGPATULOY MO GALING NG PILIPINO featuring Gabby Valenciano, originally written for OFWs also fits nicely dedicated to the soldiers. The theme of self-sacrifice and excellence is applicable to the SAF members who were chosen from the cream of the crop of the police force. While Gary sang the vocals, his son Gabby performed the rap portions of the original.

SANDWICH dedicated their song SUGOD “para sa mga kapatid nating matapang na sumugod.” It was also the first time I had heard The Dawn backed up by a whole choir: The U.P. Singing Ambassadors. Vocalist and sought after actor Jett Pangan was belting out a medley of their hits. IISANG BANGKA TAYO was particularly meaningful with the message of brotherhood and even peace. The Dawn was the grand finale in a night of the biggest stars in Filipino music. Jett by dedicating their song SALAMAT, “Higit sa lahat maraming salamat sa lahat ng bayani na nag buwis ng buhay nila para sa atin!”

Late last year when news broke out that Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo was no longer Associate Artistic Director for Repertory Phil. the theater community received it with shock and dismay. Having started her career with Rep since her adolescent years she has evolved from a fruitful acting career to become an acting coach and has even directed several successful productions with JEKYLL&HYDE as the most recent. Close friends, actors especially those from CAMP ROCK showed their support for Menchu by changing their facebook profile photos to red.

She was also a constant presence in the launches and press cons for the many productions of Rep. Apart from being articulate and a source of quotes for media, she was always very warm and accommodating to everyone. Yulo currently stars as Anna Leonowens in Resort’s World’s KING AND I with Nonie Buencamino extended until May 2013.

Menchu is one of many names that are identified with the prestigious theater company that has produced the likes of Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson. KING AND I was actually one of the first productions for Lea Salonga at age 7 and Menchu’s brother Raymond Lauchengco was Louis. Lea and Menchu were reunited on stage most recently for GOD OF CARNAGE with Adrian Pang and Art Acuña last year for Atlantis productions, during her tenure as Associate Artistic Director of REP.

Juno Henares is Officer In charge for the current Repertory production BOEING BOEING. In one on one interview Henares did not pin point any one thing as the cause of the termination for Yulo. “It may have been a bunch of different things.  But it wasn’t between me and her. It was basically a board decision. The board discussed it. I am on the same level as hers.”

Henares noted that Menchu was asked to continue her directorial post in two projects NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY and THE PRODUCERS. It was Menchu, however, who decided not to direct any more, “Everybody’s welcome to work here. We never stopped anyone from coming to work. I’ve been working here in and out since I won’t say how old! (laughs) We all have our different times. We come in and out. I for example I was gone, I was in the U.S for years. And here I am now on the business side. This is our home, everybody’s welcome.”

THE GRADUATE with Cherie Gil in the lead role is one of the most anticipated shows of the 2013 season for Repertory. Since Menchu was the one who was able to cast her, it was rumored that Gil may also bow out of the project. Henares said it was a simple case of scheduling, the same with the original casting for BOEING BOEING, “Cherie bowed out because she also had problems with her schedule. First Michael (De Mesa) had called me and said his teleserye is with Bong Revilla, INDIO with GMA network. They’re doing a lot of taping all around and they have to stick to the availability of Bong.”

According to her De Mesa had explained that the shoot of INDIO was in Pagsanjan in one day and another part of Laguna the next. She agreed with him having to bow out, “If that’s gonna be the case, it’s live theater. So everybody has to constantly grow with each other through this discovery process while you’re on stage. So we said think about it because it’s going to be unfair to everybody else as Miguel (Faustmann) was saying. When he made that decision we just had to respect it.”

Miguel Faustmann the director of BOEING BOEING in an interview was more forthright about losing Menchu, “She had a contract with Resort’s World for 6 months and the board felt that she may not be giving enough time for the office. So for her to concentrate on all the other projects she’s doing outside of Rep, to go ahead and do it. She’s welcome to return. She was I think offended and backed out of even her directorial. We didn’t want her to back out. We just wanted to remove her position in the office so she can concentrate on whatever she’s doing. She’s always welcome to come back. We need somebody there full time.”

Faustmann believes there are no ill feelings between REP and Yulo. The younger cast of CAMP ROCK may have been affected the most with the loss, “The kids make drama, the kids were all making facebook, facebook I don’t know what. They’re making such a big deal being so childish, so stupid! Baby (Barredo) loves Menchu. We all love Menchu. Menchu felt offended because she felt she was fired. She was not fired. She was just asked to step down from that position. I don’t know why she felt offended and backed out of even her directorial.” Baby Barredo is the co founder of REP and is the current Artistic Director of Repertory Phil.

Faustmann stated that after Menchu’s 6-month contract with Resort’s World is done she can come back to REP, “There are no hard feelings on our part. I don’t know about them. It’s a big misunderstanding. Baby was very hurt also. What do you think? She’s like our mom. She mothers us all. We’re like all her kids.”

Faustmann also related how Menchu was very much concerned with the BOEING BOEING with both Michael De Mesa and Michael Williams backing out, “In fact Menchu called me about BOEING BOEING, she found out the 2 Michaels backed out.  She was worried about the opening of the season. ‘Menchu but why aren’t you directing NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY?  No Audie will take over. That’s your play. No, no, Miguel I’m hurt Miguel, I’m hurt.’ I was trying to explain to her it’s nothing personal. But apparently she was very disturbed about the whole thing. She just didn’t want to do it. So that’s what happened.”

At the same time he spoke about the reason for asking Menchu to step down he admits that he himself has worked in outside projects while working with REP, “I’ve freelance also. I’ve worked with other companies like Atlantis and so many other companies. It’s a matter of scheduling. It’s not a problem I have TV and I couldn’t do theater because I had TV. I was earning more. Why stop me from earning a better income? When there’s no TV or nothing, I’m back in the theater again. She’s part of REP. She hasn’t left, I don’t know the drama that people were saying or making chismis, making a mountain out of a molehill, so stupid and childish.”

Backstage in KING AND I, Menchu was able to talk about how it happened, “I was asked to step down so my term ended in December for various reasons. I’m not even quite sure, but I think one reason being was my KING AND I. Which was really never a factor because I had done shows during my tenure as associate and I’ve always prioritized Rep. So that came as a shock to me when I tried to explain that basically I’m only here weekends.”

According to her there was no scheduling conflict, “I helped launch the season and the season was set to go. There was really no work for me to do except to make sure that rehearsals were going on. I could do that during the week. I’m only here on the weekends. So that was it and it was very painful for me. But I had to accept and that was basically it.” Bo Cerrudo and Sheila Valderrama are also in the lead roles for KING AND I.

There may have also been a disagreement with the functions of her job, “If there were other reasons, one was that I was not around for CAMP ROCK production week. But then again that is really not in my obligations any more because I’m just Associate Artistic director. I wasn’t the director for that. It was directed by Audie Gemora.”

Whatever reasons or problem wasn’t clearly brought up with her beforehand, “If there were more reasons than that I really don’t know. It was pretty much based on that. If they wanted exclusivity maybe they could’ve asked me and not terminate me because it was never a rule that I not perform outside. It was agreed on that as long as I do my duties then I could perform outside, which I did. As they very well know the last two years.  So if it had been an issue then it should have been brought to my attention and have been given the option to say ‘yes’ I will be exclusive or ‘no’ I don’t want to be exclusive. But I wasn’t given that choice. So it’s all right.”

The remaining question was why she felt she had to let go of the directorial apart from the Associate Artistic Director position, “I just felt that it was very painful to be terminated. And not be allowed to see my season through which is the season I put up. I thought about it well and I just felt if you’re going to terminate me let’s call it quits, clean cut. It would be very hard for me to still be involved half way. It’s either yes or no, not maybe. Don’t do this but you can do this. If that’s how you feel and because I was very hurt by it, I decided I need time to recover. Let’s just do it cleanly and see what the future brings. It’s going to be very difficult to come in half way.

Menchu however remains concerned with REP and its productions and responds to the questions if she harbors ill feelings, “Not at all, REP is my home. I just felt that it’s really just a matter of principle. I set the season and I’m not allowed to see the season through then I can’t work half way.  Like you said, pahinga muna. So there’s no sama ng loob. It would be very hard for me to work on that premise. Given that I did set the season, I cast the season and I won’t have a say on it anymore. So it’s like you’re not quite here or there. The only way for it to really work for both ends is for me to just be out of it. There will be more hurt feelings if I had continued. Then I’d raise an issue and it might create friction even more. By my stepping back it lets them go full blast on their own without anything from me.”

Although she hasn’t recently talked to Cherie Gil about backing out of THE GRADUATE she’s sure it wasn’t because of the termination, “I really don’t know what her reasons were. It would be very unfair for me to say so. I don’t think it’s because I’m out; she’s very professional. It’s a role she wanted to do. I’d be afraid to assume but she was perfect for that.”

Apart from KING AND I, Menchu is involved with a new group called FRIENDS IN MUSIC or F.I.M. for short. The group is composed of herself, Liza Infante-Robinson, Teenee Chan, Jett Pangan, Michael Stuart Willams and Rem Zamora. The group came about after a good friend approached Menchu for a fund raising event. Nene Chan Chairperson of the One Meal Foundation brought the group to Ilo-ilo for a very successful one-night show.

Since that night the group has gotten a lot of good feedback and has even booked an important show abroad, “We sing in private functions, events and we do a lot of Broadway songs. We have a great musical arrangement in Inday Echevarria. She’s done wonderful arrangements for us. We’ve been slowly getting a lot of attention. So we’re very fortunate that we do what we love to do which is to sing. We’re singing in Paris for the Philippine Embassy for Independence Day that’s on June. We’re having so much fun.” Watch out for an upcoming F.I.M. concert this April.

“This day, or never, I’ll sit forever with the gods! When I look back, I will always recall…the greatest moment of them all!” This is the triumphant final chorus of “This is the Moment” from Repertory Phil. “Jekyll & Hyde” which runs until April 22 at Onstage, Greenbelt1. The song calls for power in the voice that Jett Pangan has in spades. The vocal prowess was always there for Jett who is one of the most recognizable faces in Pinoy rock. As the front man of The Dawn, his powerful vocals have become the signature to songs like “Salamat”, “Enveloped Ideas” and “Talaga Naman.”

Recently Pangan has started OPM2Go with Ogie Alcasid to be able to sell Pinoy music online in a more convenient way. In an article in PDI by Pocholo Concepcion: “Buying the songs can be done through mobile phones (using SMART’S Pasabayad scheme). For non Smart subscribers opm2go prepaid cards are available at National Bookstore, 7 Eleven, Astro Vision and Odyssey.” But because people know him as this ultimate Filipino rock star, his talent in acting has taken a backseat from the public consciousness.

Even though Pangan has innumerable stage roles over a 12-year period since he was cast in his first musical. He was given an Aliw award for his role as Jimmy Early in “Dreamgirls”. Recently he was also nominated for his lead role opposite Menchu Lauchengco Yulo in the play “Next to Normal.” Pangan is also cast in Antlantis Production’s in “Rock of Ages” on July with Lea Salonga and Mig Ayesa. And in Spetember he will be in the musical “Nine.” Menchu is cast opposite Lea Salonga in “God of Carnage.”

The lavish musical marks the first time Jett will be part of a Repertory Phil. production. Menchu now serves as his director. Alternating for the title role is veteran stage actor Michael Williams who has had over 100 roles to his credit. Michael was part of the original “Miss Saigon” cast along with Lea Salonga, Monique Wilson, Cocoy Laurel and Junix Inocian. Junix is reunited with Williams for this musical in the role of Gabriel Utterson. Usually Williams dons the hat of director.

Michael Williams described Jett during the press con, “He’s a tough act to follow and a great performer. I wish I had his gravity, which makes his Hyde darker. I do comedies and musicals. It’s really an effort to make myself darker. The challenge is my voice is light. He has that darkness that lends itself to the voice.”

Jett on the other hand believes that Williams has a unique take on the character, “Michael has a lot of nuances only a person with vast experience in theater has. For him to transform is a revelation. It’s something we won’t expect.”

For Jett, it’s a subtle transformation at first, but because of his passionate rock star persona he easily inhabits the Hyde character. Menchu did not want the caricature monster but more of the believable sinister rendition. She said, “I didn’t want to create a monster based on the novel. If I went that route it would be funny. It’s just a potion that takes any inhibitions. It would be like a man on drugs. I didn’t want the Broadway hair with a ponytail.”

There’s a facial expression that changes in addition to the louder, more forceful delivery for Hyde. The most difficult and also the most impressive scene is when both personas try to take control. Jett has to deliver one line after the other each character responding in the “Confrontation”. Both the performance and the direction deserve a lot of credit. Unlike in other versions where the character relies on gimmicks to delineate the two personas, here it’s reliant solely on the delivery. The previous Broadway version (one with David Hasselhoff) had the lead actor with long hair on one side and short hair on the other. The actor turning from one side to the other as each character responds.

Here it was reliant on voice, facial expression and lighting. One side was bathed in deep magenta, the other a cool blue. Other than that, Jett was the one bringing both characters to life conflicting inside him. “JEKYLL: All that you are is the end of a nightmare! All that you are is a dying scream! After tonight, I shall end this demon dream! HYDE: This is not a dream, my friend -And it will never end… now and forever, They’ll never be able to separate Jekyll from Hyde!”

It was one of the biggest concerts of the year with artists such as Sarah Geronimo, Ebe Dancel, Rico Blanco, PUPIL, Parokya Ni Edgar, Someday Dream, Gloc 9 with Denise Barbaceña, Callalily, Itchyworms, Sandwich with Jay Durias, Chicosci, Sponge Cola, Wolfgang, 6 Cycle mind with Eunice of Gracenote and Best Urban Group awardee: Q YORK. The whole concert lasted more than 12 hours.

Many technological breakthroughs were achieved with the event. Large screens showed the Tweets and facebook posts of audience members. Interactivity was the keyword for it along with live video streaming of the event. Free Wifi was provided in the venue by PLDT and SMART. The concert was not meant to be a contest of who’s better, far from it. In fact there were quite a few collaborations between the artists: Jay Durias and Sandwich, Gloc9 and Wolfgang, Sponge Cola and Chicosci, Ebe Dancel and Itchyworms etc.

But it was difficult not to compare specifically with Gary Valenciano who took his performance to a level that no one could have anticipated. To the benefit of Big Picture and Coca cola Bottlers Phil Mkt. Activation Group Manager Rogie Delena, they were able to produce a show with a crescendo slowly building up to the climax of the celebration. Sarah Geronimo surprised everyone by dancing impressively along with her famous vocals.

When Gary V went on the energy level immediately shot up. He sang the fast paced hits he was known for like “Di Bale Na lang.” His son Gaby Valenciano may have even improved on the dancing talent. In the middle of the stage Gary stood back gave Gabby some space and suddenly he was in the air doing an incredibly high somersault.

Father and son were in perfect sync executing one spectacular dance move after another. Gary V dusted off the robot move from the 80’s and used it again in that historic night. And it looked as fresh as it did when he first wowed millions of fans nearly 30 years ago.

Gary spoke from the heart preferring NOT to use the script for the show. He admitted that it was his 29^th year in showbiz and they put the oldest guy as one of the last performers. Ironic, that the ‘oldest guy’ put on the highest energy performance of the night. As if his fast paced songs and dance moves weren’t enough, he also slowed things down with his soundtracks “Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan” and “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin.” He also incorporated his faith in his performance by singing “Could You Be Messiah?”

THAT Batch

I was able to talk to Connie De Leon of AEDI about Gary’s performance. She reminded me that Gary is practically the same age as Martin Nievera, Sharon Cuneta and Zsa zsa Padilla. It was that batch in the 80s that produced the biggest names in both music and film of today. They are ALL exceptional vocalists. Both Sharon and Zsa zsa are more awarded actresses. But Martin and Gary have a stronger concert and record sales.

It is incredible to think that those immensely talented people came from one batch. ALL of their kids also happen to be coming to their own in music / showbiz: Robin Nievera released “Overwait” and has also produced both his parents’ albums. Zia Quizon (Zsa zsa’s daughter with Dolphy) is applauded by critics for her songwriting and vocals on her self-titled mini CD “Zia”. Her half sister Karylle has proven herself many times over most recently in “Kitchen Musical.” KC Concepcion is the most well known as TV host, endorser and her emotional breakdown in a Boy Abunda interview (post Piolo Pascual). Gabby is the only one however, to perform with his famous dad regularly. Incredulously, Gabby may well be a better dancer.

20 years old AGAIN

Going back to Gary’s performance at the Concert Ng Bayan, he surprised everyone with a fresh song list. The original hits were expected but when he sang a medley of current dance/party hits like the Black Eyed Peas “The Time”, David Guetta and Usher’s “Without You” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” the whole venue seemed to implode with excitement. Gary just appeared to sing and dance better than even the original artists. It was as if he was 20 years old again. Most of the people watching him at the Concert Ng Bayan weren’t born when young people like me (in the 80s) were already awestruck with what he could do THEN. And he just got better and better with age. The Coca cola event gave an even younger generation the chance to know and see why Gary V is known as Mr. Pure Energy.

Days later, at the Olivia Newton John concert I was able to talk about the Gary V’s performance with music executives like Myx Channel Mgr Mila Labendia. Myx Channel Head André Alvarez wondered, “What else could he (Gary) possibly do in his next concert to top what he did at the Coke event? That makes me think and excited at the same time really want to go to the concert.” Gary V has his “On Higher Ground” concert series at the Music Museum on April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27, May 9 & 10, 2012. LMFAO will also be in town at the SMART Araneta Coliseum on April 11.

The Concert Ng Bayan was unique in a sense that a big international artist like Craig David followed one of the top tier Filipino performers. And even if it wasn’t a competition you can’t help but compare. After Gary V’s performance, Sarah Geronimo and Rez Toledo of Someday Dream joined him on stage for the Coke anthem and the spectacular fireworks show.

Craig David then went on stage as the lone foreign artist and was the intended ‘climax’ or another high point for the event. David is both a multi awarded British singer and songwriter winning MTV Music awards for (Best UK and R&B act). He’s also a 2-time Billboard award winner for Best R&B New Artist and Dance (New Artist) clip of the year and was even nominated for a Grammy.

Most young teenage audiences may even be more familiar with Craig than with Gary V. And it’s no disrespect or indication of David’s performance itself. But there was a marked dip in energy level comparing with Gary V, the previous act. Gary took the performance and pace to such a high level that audiences needed to sit down and take a break by the time David went on stage. Gary out did himself so much that no one would have anticipated the disparity in energy level and pace. No artist would have been able to sustain what Gary did that night except maybe the late MJ himself. Gary has admitted in the past that Michael Jackson was a huge influence in terms of music and dance.

There’s no question that today Filipino music lovers have the benefit of seeing a lot of foreign artists. Greyson Chance will be at the Smart Araneta on April 22, Lady Gaga is scheduled to open The Arena at MOA on May 21. One of my songwriting heroes Morissey (formerly the lead singer of The Smiths, also from the 80s) will be at the World Trade Center on May 13^th.

Along with these foreign artists Pinoy fans knowing the incredible level our local performers should consciously look for events that feature Pinoy talent. For example PULP Summer Slam on April 23 will feature Intolerant, Kamikazee, URBANDUB, Chicosci, Franco and Slim along with foreign artists Arch Enemy, August Burns Red, Blessthefall, Darkest Hour, Periphery, and We Came as Romans.

Another example of Pinoy music you can catch is Spirit of ‘67 at Eastwood mall every Tuesday. Cris Villonco and Audie Gemora are a two of the many talented cast members in “The Sound of Music” at Resort’s World Newport Theater that can be seen until May 27, 2012. Jett Pangan is spellbinding in Repertory Phil.’s “Jekyll & Hyde” until April 22, 2012. We Filipinos have the talent and skill. There are concerts, musicals and events we can find. All we have to do as consumers is make the conscious decision to support Filipino music. Alam naman natin masmagaling si Gary V kay Craig David.

Cris Villonco is one of the busiest theater actors. She currently stars in two simultaneous productions: Resort’s World’s “Sound of Music” and Repertory Phil. Leading Ladies. The latter is running until March 4, 2012, Sunday at Onstage Greenbelt. Sound of Music is extended until May 27. As if that’s not enough she will also have a major role in the upcoming “Jekyll & Hyde” with Jett Pangan and Michael Williams alternating in the title role.

“Leading Ladies” is easily the funniest stage production this year. James Stacey and Topper Fabregas play the gender bending roles of Leo Clark and Jack Gable. The two Shakespearean actors pretend to be ladies in claiming an inheritance from sick old lady Florence played by Juno Henares.

While Cris is a natural for her role of Maria in Sound of Music, playing the bright and happy personality of Meg in Leading Ladies is a little more difficult; “I do better emotionally with a sadder character rather than a happy character. I am not a bubbly person in real life. I’m not bubbly at all. So for me to be able to pull that off as Maria and Meg as is whew!”

Everyone was impressed with Villonco’s performance in “Leading Ladies”. Her voice and look is reminiscent of the legendary stage and film actress Debbie Reynolds. The accent and delivery of lines is almost worlds apart from the 3 roles that she is juggling. She jokes with the demands, “Yes I’m very confused for the moment. This one has an American accent, Maria obviously has a British-Austrian accent. Jekyll & Hyde has a very uppity British accent. When they’re combined I get quite confused but I love it for me to be doing this so willingly. Tita Baby (Barredo) always says that every character is very unique. Only that particular character will say those lines. So it’s true. As Meg I don’t think I’ll be talking in a British accent and singing. ‘High on a hill with a lonely goat herd’. They are 3 different characters different emotions. That’s what keeps us sane.”

The physical demands of playing several roles at the same time also takes its toll literally getting from one show to the next. “Telling you the truth on Sunday, which I’m dreading, I’m doing the show here then I’m running to Resort’s World. There’s a 30-minute window to do the 7pm show. So it’s a major challenge for me and I’m a little bit scared. Bahala na si God.

Cris shares one important trait with her Leading Ladies character Meg and that’s love for theater, “I can definitely relate to her.  She’s very smart and yet she’s silly at the same time to fall in love with someone like Leo Clark. And yes I love the theater it’s a major decision to decide to do theater. Especially here in the Philippines because we all know how that works, how challenging it is financially and emotionally. I love doing this show and I love doing that character.”

She has cast mates from two different productions Audie Gemora was George Von Trapp in Sound of Music and is the Artistic Director of Repertory Phil. Gemora is also the head of Talent5 the actor’s development arm of TV5.  On March 17, In Jekyll & Hyde, Cris will be acting opposite Jett Pangan and her Leading Ladies director Michael Williams. “It’s my second time to share the stage with Jett. The first time was Legally Blonde. But this is the first time as leading man. I am just in awe of both Michael Williams and him. They bring different things. They give different Jekylls and Hydes to the character. And I am so excited because whether it’s Jett or it’s Michael it’s gonna be a really good show.”

Pinoy Super group The Dawn gave a surprise performance at the Cinemalaya awards night last July 24, 2011. They performed the classic hit “Iisang Bangka” which enlivened the audience. More than a dozen half naked men in jeans had a dance number in front of the band. Best Actor awardee Edgar Allan Cruz, in the New Breed Category for “Ligo Na U Lapit Na Me” was the lead dancer in the group. It was his night. The choreography was also reminiscent of the dance themed “Ang Sayaw Ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” which won the Best Original Score-Chrsitine Muco and Jena Pamintuan.

The dancers were simulating the rowing of oars which is logical for the song. But it may look like they’re doing something else from still photos. Could Edgar Allan Cruz be the next Coco Martin?

The Dawn has had some history with Cinemalaya, their film “Tulad Ng Dati” by Mike Sandejas in 2006 dealt with their loss of guitarist Teddy Diaz. Some people have also made the observation that vocalist Jett Pangan looks like actor John Lapus. I feel Jett is more handsome while John is prettier. Lapus was seen beside New Breed Best Actress winner Eugene Domingo of “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank”during the “Ligo Na u Lapit Na me” gala. Both “Ligo na U…” and “…Septic Tank” will have their commercial releases this August as well. Check listings in newspapers for theaters and exact dates.

The Dawn’s 25^th anniversary concert held recently at the Eastwood Central Plaza was made extra special when Jett Pangan’s son Raphael joined them on stage as guitarist. He has already grown as tall as his famous dad at only 12 years old. Nicknamed Raffy, he skillfully played guitars on an extended version of, “Love Will Set Us Free”. He then played the sentimental and apt “Tulad ng Dati” which was also the title of their film directed by Mike Sandejas for Cinemalaya.

The concert was organized by Jam 88.3 as part of the 7^th Jam Music Fest together with other bands that paid tribute to The Dawn such as: Imago,Sandwich, Peryodiko, 6 Cycle Mind, Rivermaya, General Luna and top solo performers like Ebe Dancel and Nyoy Volante.

One of the VIPs in attendance was Lea Salonga with husband Rob Chen. Salonga who is a close friend of Jett and the band, was able to talk about the touching moment. “I saw Raffy since 5 years old. It’s interesting to see that a torch was being passed. But we don’t know if he’s going to take this professionally or do this as a hobby, we don’t know if he’s going to pick up the mantle that his father is occupying.”

Even without the prompting of anyone Raffy picked up the guitar and practiced by himself for hours on end. Jett Pangan proudly said, “It’s the greatest feeling in the world. If you’re a father anything your son does you’ll be proud of as long as it’s a good thing. He wants to be a rock star but he also wants to be a quantum physicist. I’m not kidding. Let’s see.” Both Jett and mom Beth are happy with whatever he decides to choose to get into.

Salonga was also able to talk about her experience with Jett as her guest in her concert “Your Song”, “Our production manager who had also worked with him in musical theater said the minute he comes out on stage that entire place is just gona explode! The minute he appeared I thought the PICC’s roof was gonna fall in. All of these people who were watching my concert had a deep love for The Dawn for them to respond to him in such a big way.”

Salonga being a music icon herself was no stranger to rousing ovations. But harnessing the energy of a rock concert was something new to her, “Being on stage with him for that one number gave me the feeling of what it was like to be him for five minutes. And it’s amazing, for five minutes it was a rock concert. I have no fear of Jett we’ve been friends for a very long time. It was helpful that I wasn’t intimidated by his presence and by his talent or how powerful he is on stage. It was actually a lot of fun.” Jett was a special guest together with Dulce and Bituin in “Ryan Cayabyab and Friends” at the Resorts World concert series last June 28.

The Dawn co wrote and performed a special single with Raymond Marasigan (of Sandwich) to celebrate their 25^th anniversary entitled “9,125”. The song according to Pangan was already finished and will soon be played in Jam 88.3. A tribute album of The Dawn classics entitled “Enveloped Ideas” was launched at The Hard Rock Café in Glorietta, June 30, 2011. The album will feature the hottest indie bands such as Techy Romantics, Enemies of Saturn, Join the Club, Lip service, Ginoong Vitalis, The Disco Ball, Happy Days Ahead, Overtone, Flying Ipis, Gun Monkeys, Switch, Rubberpool, Milk and Money, Soft Pillow Kisses and Playphonics.
