I can’t believe the sequel is actually better than the first one. I may be alone in thinking that. For me it was so personal and nostalgic. I don’t know how many people will feel the way that I do. The Frank Sinatra songs in particular hit me hard. They were my dad’s (Jose C. Bautista) favorites. I don’t want to call it a musical but it almost is in a way. That’s how well Todd Philips weaved it. Where the song was more a state of mind of the character.

You knew what Joker was thinking and feeling when he bursts out into song. That’s how it was, he literally bursts out into song. But because it was so well chosen, the lyrics, the mood of the song. Stevie Wonder’s FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE in the scene made perfect sense. Written by Ronald Miller and Orlando Murden for Motown Records. It’s not a huge musical number. Mostly it was acapella. Frank Sinatra’s live version of FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE was also a big hit.

Music here was truly compelling. Not just with the song selections, but the (composed/ recorded) soundtrack by Hildur Guðnadóttir. She was already recognized with the SOUNDTRACK STARS AWARD. Emotional Weight

Man, Joaquin had this raspy, untrained, painfully average voice, but because of the emotional weight that he put into it. Almost drove me to tears, really. I could almost hear my dad sing it (a little better) and have as much joy into it.  Joaquin Phoenix poured all kinds of emotions into, not just that song, but all the songs. At the same time, the scene was actually hilarious. It wasn’t supposed to be as sentimental as it was to me.

Old Hollywood

The song selection was very old Hollywood from the 40s to the 60s, 80s. Philips the director has this obsession with old Hollywood even in the HANGOVER franchise. The modern day Brat Pack if you will: Bradley Cooper (Sinatra), Ed Helms (Dean Martin), Justin Bartha (Peter Lawford), Zach Galifianakis (Sammy Davis) with Ken Jeong to boot. THE HANGOVER guys admittedly just had a lot less class and was messier. Not any less talented though. But waaay funnier.

Early Gaga

For Gaga it may be the role, that’s most accurate to her on stage persona. THAT laissez faire of putting on clown make up and exposing this wild, devil may care identity, living inside you. That’s the REAL Lady Gaga. OR to be exact the one that made her famous. Early hits like POKER FACE, JUST DANCE, BORN THIS WAY and PAPARAZZI bear this out.

She’s able to channel that side of her persona as Lee Quintel here. She hasn’t been given enough credit on her acting abilities. Possibly because of her  high profile music career. It all comes together in JOKER2 , whether or not she’s singing. She made the loneliness and fascination with Joker, very believable.

Scary Jackie

Brendan Gleeson as the torturous corrections officer Jackie, will definitely be one of his most memorable roles. He deserves a Best Supporting actor trophy here. His character Jackie is absolutely brutal, beating Art with a 2 foot long baton.

But also has a soft spot in my heart because he also happens to be a Sinatra fan (insert Joker laugh here). He snuck in a song or two with the prison pianist. Gleeson is one of the most iconic Irish actors critically acclaimed for THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN and IN BRUGES. But  he has had countless roles including HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS as Alaster Mad Eye Moody. He won a Lead Actor Emmy in 2009 portraying Churchill for INTO THE STORM.

Kuya Germs Fave Song

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT song featured prominently from a musical the prisoners were watching. Joaquin was just mesmerized WITH that movie. And singing that particular song. For Filipinos it has a special significance. TV Legend Herman Moreno used it as his theme and show concept. Launching the careers of Piolo Pascual, Lea Salonga to former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno.

I didn’t even know it was from a 1952 musical  called THE BAND WAGON starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. The musical is regarded as one of best from MGM. Incidentally was not a big hit in the box office, initially. But critically acclaimed.

Late 70s Production Design

The production design, is also a bit nostalgic for me. The old TV sets, the rotary phones, mid to late 1970s, early eighties. The Sonny and Cher themed TV show/ as the set of Gaga’s fantasies.

The time of my own childhood. Which, I’m suspecting is the period of Todd Philips youth as well. He’s just a year older than me at 53. JOKER1 was more political, this one was more a love story. He knows how to pull my heart strings because this is a movie that would move him emotionally.

In my mind, if the younger generation can spare a thought for artists like Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, George & Ira Gershwin, The Carpenters, Bee Gees then JOKER FOLIE A DEUX would have done its job.
