The very first day of Chinese New Year began with a bang, February 10, 2024. The Salcedo Market in Makati had its own celebration complete with dragon Dance, cymbals and drums. It was fun seeing a lot of the expat kids and families getting a kick out of their first Chinese New Year.

I started there because, I accompanied my mom (Linda). She operates JOY’S HAM which has a stall in the Market. And there are many Chinese NY celebrations across the metro. The one in Chinatown should be more elaborate. But is also more crowded, understandably.

Here in Salcedo, its more chill. Certainly, has greater variety of cuisines French, Mexican, Moroccan, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, of course Chinese and Filipino. All in one park, walking distance of one another.

Lucky Lunch

THEN we were off to Gloria Maris in Greenhills to meet with other family members. My brother Timothy and wife Joy were hosting my other brother George and wife Hazel, who are based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Off the corner of my eye, I noticed Mother Lily Monteverde also celebrating the new year with her own family. The Regal Films matriarch’s table was beside ours. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was, because Mother Lily is an icon of Philippine cinema.

She started out importing old b&w Hollywood films. Then became one of the most prolific producers with about 300 titles to her name. Not least of which is the MANO PO saga which captured the Filipino Chinese experience. George, also happened to play basketball with her sons Ronald and Goldwin during their PICAA days.

I also couldn’t resist taking a photo of her with Gloria Maris Assistant Manager Polly Ong whom she gave an ‘ampao’. This is the red envelope that contains a cash gift said to provide luck to both the recipient and giver. No wonder, Mother Lily is successful in her business ventures as luck has multiplied several times back from the many ampaos she has given over the years. Seeing her was a great start to my Lunar year.

Robinsons Megamall Shang Adventure Walk

A friend of ours who lives in Binondo (Edward Cheng) wouldn’t even leave his apartment during Chinese New Year because the crowds are just insane. So I unintentionally, devised my own adventure walk during Lunar year Celebrations.

This is the second time I’ve done it. It’s an easy route from Ortigas to Shaw boulevard. Where you can stop anytime, in your fave milk tea shop, fast food. The distance between malls won’t take you more than a 15-20 minute walk. Otherwise, you’re in an airconditioned environ.

Robinsons Galleria

Starting from Robinsons Galleria, going through SM Megamall, ending in Shang Rila Plaza Mall. This is to peruse their own Chinese NY celebrations. Each mall has a lot of freebies, sales and unique activities.

Gale (pronounced GA-Lé) had the Spring Film Festival where Chinese cinema was shown in the fest along with several activities like Chinese Paper Cut and Chinese Knot tying. Robinsons Galleria has been renovated and has a lot of new features like a dog park. Along with a play area for toddlers (the human kind). Not to mention regular kid friendly activities.

Chan Lim Exhibit

A giant 50 ft tall, red dragon is now, residing in the middle of the SM Mega Mall, main lobby. Thousands have taken selfies and groupfies with it. It’s actually quite friendly and overlooks a unique Chinese Art Exhibit. Not a lot of people are aware that for years SM has been the home for the Chan Lim Exhibit. Where traditional Chinese watercolor and other painting techniques are used on different items like lanterns, umbrellas and plates.

Over the years many prominent names have participated in the exhibit. One of the names that caught my eye is Tats Manahan, President of ARDP (Alice Reyes Dance Philippines). One of the most prestigious ballet companies in the country.

This year marks the greatest number of exhibit participants at 65, with a total of 460 art works.

Along with the exhibit are panels showing the Chinese horoscope. Going through the it, there was a random English man reading horoscopes out loud. He had to be English (because of the accent). Let’s just say there was a tinge of disbelief in his delivery. If you read it that way, the predictions do sound preposterous. Nevertheless, he did remind me (and others) you shouldn’t take it too seriously. And is just a way to add positivity to your mindset at the beginning of your Lunar year.

SURF’s Wais Convention

Going from Mega A to Mega B, I dropped by the 5^th level Megatrade Halls. Where I covered the successful WATSONS Health Expo a week before. This time it was AGAIN a hive of activity during SURF’s Wais Convention – the Home of Blooming Waispreneurs. Melai Cantiveros and Tin Tin Bersola were among the celebrity speakers.

The event encouraged moms, aunties and grandmas, (basically anyone regardless of gender and age) to look for new business ventures. It’s a wide range from sari-sari store level, distributing / retailing items to milk tea shops, soaps, pet clothes and many more.

The 50 participating booths are by mom-preneurs who went through Surf’s Wais-University. These are free online courses specifically for stay-at-home moms.

I can’t think of a more productive way to start your lunar year. Voltes V Legacy Cast

A lot of Shang Rila Plaza Mall’s CNY activities had been building up for weeks Jan 23-Feb 24. Including spectacular fireworks display on the eve, (midnight of Feb 9). Early evening of Feb 10, I got to Shang Rila Plaza Mall’s RED CARPET Cinema in the midst of the Japanese Film Festival. That night was the VOLTES V LEGACY CINEMA EXPERIENCE screening. What I didn’t anticipate was how popular it was going to be. Where all tickets were sold out as early as the previous day. So I was ‘wait listed’, meaning I had to line up and stay there knowing I could still very well be turned away.

Luckily, I got in, which allowed me to watch the live action, 100% Filipino made movie on the big screen. Even better, I was able to photograph the cast who were there to watch it:

Blessed

The following day, (Sunday), my uncle George Apostol wanted to host the New Zealanders George and Hazel for a party. This time with my cousins, nephews from my mother’s side in PCA (Philippine Columbian Association). Their kind words / speeches made me realize how blessed I am, how blessed we all are. We have our health. We have each other.

I was blessed enough to have a full Lunar New Year’s Day extending to a week. I am both grateful and hopeful this year of the Dragon, 2024. Even if it doesn’t go my way, I trust God will give me the fortitude to endure, until the next Lunar year.
