BY now everyone has heard the public outcry of HUSTISYA for lead actress Nora Aunor in Joel Lamangan’s film. But the whole category is worth watching. ASINTADO by Louie Ignacio looks visually promising having the TAONG PUTIK festival as backdrop to a crime thriller. Carlitos Siguion Reyna returns to filmmaking after a 14-year hiatus with HARI NG TONDO. His cast is powered by multitalented and much loved faces from theater such as Cris Villonco, Lorenz Martinez, Audie Gemora, Hans Eckstein. The lead role belongs to film and tv star Robert Arevalo along with Aiza Seguerra, Rez Cortez, Liza Lorena and many others.

Jay Altarejos explores how a gay couple played by Arnold Reyes and Oliver Aquino perceives love and marriage in the Philippines in KASAL. The Cinemalaya debut of Mike Tuviera is an explosive action film based on the biggest and most brutal bank heists in recent years: THE JANITOR. It also boasts the most star studded cast of the fest having Dennis Trillo, Richard Gomez, Ricky Davao, Dante Rivero, Irma Adlawan, LJ Reyes, Derek Ramsay, Raymond Bagatsing, Alex Medina, Jerald Napoles, Nico Manalo.

FILMMAKER PROFILE: CARLOS SIGUION-REYNA, film director, received his M.F.A. in film from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (NYC). His NYU thesis film Patas Lang (Fair Exchange) was awarded in the narrative category of the 1989 Nissan FOCUS Awards. Twelve feature films, various short films and documentaries, television and stage works followed, some of which include the award winning and critically acclaimed Choices, Azucena (Dog Food), Kahapon May Dalawang Bata (Yesterday Children), Ang Lalaki sa Buhay ni Selya (The Man in Her Life), Aangkinin Ko ang Bukas (Tomorrow Will Be Mine), Ligaya ang Itawag Mo sa Akin (They Call Me Joy), Inagaw Mo ang Lahat sa Akin (Harvest Home), Ikaw Pa Lang ang Minahal, Hihintayin Kita sa Langit (I Will Wait for You in Heaven), Walang Sugat, Aawitan Kita, At All Costs, Bahay na Pula (Red House) and Payatas: Point Counterpoint. His films screened yearly from 1994 to 2000, at the Toronto International Film Festival. His works have also been shown at the Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater (New York City), the Directors’ Guild of America Theater (Los Angeles), and the international film festivals of Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago, Seattle, Sydney, Hawaii, Palm Springs, Paris, Valladolid, Shanghai, London Human Rights Watch, and Dublin, among others. He has received ten Best Director awards from principal film industry, press, and critics’ organizations in the Philippines, and was selected one of The Outstanding Young Filipinos (TOYF) in the field of Arts/Cinema (1995). He served three terms as president of the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc. (DGPI), and is a member of Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino (NMPP). He was member of the main competition jury of Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, in 2013. Siguion-Reyna has taught film direction at the University of the Philippines Film Institute’s film program and in short lectures/workshops for the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Mowelfund Film Institute. In 2008, he joined the faculty of New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia’s M.F.A. program in film, where he has since taught film directing, screenwriting, team collaboration in filmmaking, and music video. He is presently Head of Third Year Studies in the same graduate film program.

FILMMAKER PROFILE: Director Joel Cobarrubias Lamangan has directed 57 feature films and a big number of stage plays and television presentations. He currently holds important and prestigious positions of Artistic Director of Bulwagang Gantimpala, Cultural Center of the Philippines; Creative Consultant of TV5, the “Kapatid” Network; President of the Nagkakaisang Manggagawa Ng Pelikulang Pilipino (NMPP), an organization that provides humanitarian assistance to the movie workers in the Philippine Industry; and President of the Board of Directors, Directors Guild Of The Philippines. He has been given due recognition time and again in his chosen field. One of his most valued accomplishments was to receive the Decade Award as Best Director for Gawad Urian Awards and PMPC. He started in the movies as a bit player for acclaimed directors Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal and eventually moved on to more challenging featured roles. He would later distinguish himself at the box office as a director making glossy melodramas. His films echoed images of Hollywood at its glamorous best where the women were beautiful, the men dashing and settings picturesque while an orchestra performed the theme song in the background. But while the formula proved most successful for somebody eager to make a name like him, his heart was longing for something else. He wanted to make films that delved into social ills and into the inadequacies of the government or to be able to present radical solutions that will change the world.

FILMMAKER PROFILE: JOSELITO ALTAREJOS is a Filipino director born in the 70’s renowned as one of the innovators of gay cinema in the Philippines. His films are known for their strong identity and gay subjects, and have been screened at many international and local festivals. Altarejos’ films often tackle current social issues, mainly related to gay identity- ANG LIHIM NI ANTONIO/ Antonio’s Secret (2008); poverty and inequality – ANG LARO SA BUHAY NI JUAN/The Game of Juan’s Life (2009); war and children PINK HALO-HALO (2010); and UNFRIEND (2013) on social media and youth suicide. UNFRIEND is at the Panorama Section of the 2014 Berlinale and has been getting international and local media attention for “highlighting dangerous power of social media.”*1 It will be released internationally by Fortissimo Films. His Pink Halo-Halo was also a finalist in Cinemalaya 2010 Directors Showcase category and won Best Editing. It is also the first ever long feature Tigaonaon, the language of the people of Ticao Island in Masbate. It was hailed by critics for its “sophisticated insight into our country’s precipitous decline into a cultue of violence.” *2 His other films were celebrated at international LGBT film festivals. The Game of Juan’s Life (2009) won Honorable Mention-Narrative Category at the 2010 Chicago Reeling in USA; while Antonio’s Secret (2008) was proclaimed Best Feature Film at Festival de la Luna 2010 in Valencia, Spain and Festival del Mar in Ibiza, Spain. FILMMAKER PROFILE: From the age of 12, Direk Mike Tuviera always knew he wanted to make films. A natural-born storyteller, he has been directing for more than 16 years. He has climbed the ladder from P.A. to 2nd Assistant Director to Writer to First Assistant Director to 2nd Unit Director and finally to full-fledged TV and Film Director. He is proud to be the first Filipino citizen to have been accepted into the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinema-Television’s Production Program, earning his Master’s Degree in 2004. He currently divides his time between directing for network television and making movies, as well as managing the family business.
