Exhale of Emotions in Redha’s HOPE OF TOMORROW

First is the sheer physicality of it. From a group, hunched down moving in unison, each dancer separates, running a full sprint. Some of them leaping into the arms of another dancer. Or holding their arms at a certain pose while being lifted. Another time, throwing a singular dancer high into the air much like a gymnast or cheer dancing.

The stark difference it also incorporates the grace and movement of ballet, although not strictly confined to ballet. Then the emotions they portray hit you: anger, frustration, depression. Not just in dance mind you. They seat themselves while beating their chests screaming: Gusto kong mabuhay! I want to live! Some were just moaning, grunting in pain.

All of these dark emotions expressed in different ways are part of the experiences of our dancers, artists during the pandemic lockdowns. Financial, emotional fears and social-isolation are exhaled through dance and their own dialogue. By doing so, we feel that our own pains, our own frustrations are exorcised.

The piece was the world premiere of L’ESPOIR DES LENDEMAIN (The Hope of Tomorrow) Choreographed by French-Algerian Redha Benteifour. To his fans and the dance world he is known only as Redha.

France PH 75th

Redha was tapped for the 75th Anniversary Celebration of France and the Philippines, sponsored by the AMBASSADE DE FRANCE AUX PHILIPPINES ET AN MICRONESIE, (The French Embassy) together with the CCP, ALICE REYES DANCE PHILIPPINES (ARDP) and PROFESSIONAL ARTIST SUPPORT PROGRAM.

The landmark collaboration is called Premieres and Encores held at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (TNA), CCP Main theater last October 28, 2022. Because of typhoon Paeng, an additional performance date was extended to November 5, 2022 at 3pm and 5pm.

Amb Michéle Boccoz

Amb Michéle Boccoz in a statement said, “This year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between France and the Philippines, it is with much pleasure that the embassy of France to the Philippines and the Cultural Center of the Philippines bring together artists from both countries to perform on stage. We share a common passion for the arts, visual arts, the performing arts, theater and dance.”

Boccoz described the cooperation between choreographer and dancers, “Redha Benteifour said that dance is the most universal language as it needs no translation and every movement is understood by everyone. This perhaps explains why the French choreographer is back in the Philippines for the 6th time. Now to work with the dancers of National Artist Alice Reyes’ Dance group. Through the years and several performances, Redha and Filipino dancers have communicated with one another a mutual appreciation of each other.”

Boccoz also gave her insights, “PREMIERES AND ENCORES is a showcase of some new creations inspired by the human need for freedom, for expression. Particularly after the period of confinement and lockdown and even some works that need to be performed again.”

Bravo from National Artists

The strongest cheers, came from no less than National Artist for dance Agnes Locsin, screaming ‘Bravo! Bravo!’ During the standing ovation.

According to Locsin, Redha’s work with the ALICE REYES DANCE PHILIPPINES (ARDP) helped them develop a sense of cohesiveness, “I have to thank him. Because he made the company really look good… So I’m very happy. Iba yung kay Redha e.”

Alice Reyes herself (also National Artist for Dance) described the work, “Intense, dark, non-stop, very thought provoking. He’s a provocateur. He challenges you to dig deep for what you have there.”

Spanish and Azerbaijani

The soundtrack is a combination of EDM, electronic beats, human breathing, percussions, strings and narrations. For the narrations (voice overs), he used several languages: Filipino, English (mostly from the dancers, screamed live), then Spanish and Azer.

He explains he wanted to incorporate a part of our history, “There’s North Iranian, Spanish, Tagalog and English. I feel it’s the story of the Philippines because  you had Spanish for 300 years. Its reminiscent of the grandfathers when they were speaking Spanish. Today they speak in Tagalog or English. It was a nice flashback, a story and statement to make today. After this lockdown how difficult it is to live.” In a way, by looking back at those languages, he’s also referring to the continuity of life after the pandemic. By looking back centuries, he’s saying life goes on.

Body Language

Redha literally wanted to give his dancers a voice. That’s why you hear them screaming, beating their chests. He gave them the freedom to use whatever language they chose or how to say it. “Yeah, you need to talk. After the lockdowns when you come back you’re blocked so much. You just say in the end, I just want to live. I think when you hear a 20 year old boy that says ‘I want to live’, it means that something happened. Very intense and very deep. It’s their story.”

As an outsider looking at their experiences, he feels he is able to use a magnifying glass, “Maybe I am the one that is focusing. I put a loupe on them. Of course being French I see them differently and I can tell their story, thru also my experience, through dance. And I think the body is an incredible vector of an emotion.  Because it says so many things. The way you touch, the way you grab. The way you lift. The body is a language.”

BODY LANGUAGE, incidentally is a disco hit by rock mega group Queen way back in 1982. The single showed the versatility of the band known for glam rock. BODY LANGUAGE was made popular here by Alma Moreno via her dance productions on TV also in the 1980s.

QUEEN’s official music video, (banned on MTV) featured close ups of ramp models and plus size African American models. Freddie Mercury was away head of his time with his embrace of different body types in a video produced 40 years ago.

PH In My Blood

Redha has many experiences in our country, describing it he said, “I have a very long history with the Philippines since 1993 with Agnes Locsin. Strong and powerful stories, the last one with Gabriel Barredo. It was incredible. With the Philippines I have a strong bond, it’s in my blood by now.”

Artist / Sculptor Gabby Barredo was a pioneer of Kinetic art in the Philippines who passed away in 2020. Barredo’s works have been exhibited in the LVMH Museum in Paris, ARNDT Gallery in Berlin and the Soka Art Center in Taipei. The two collaborated in a show called OPERA in 2016, incorporating Barredo’s pieces on stage and onsite exhibit with choreography by Redha. Click on this link for full article.

Man Seated On the Armchair

As if the world premiere of The Hope of Tomorrow wasn’t enough, there was also the Philippine premiere of L’HOMME ASIS DANS LE FAUTEUIL (Man Seated On the Armchair) also by Redha.

This could be interpreted as an intimate look of an abusive relationship. There’s the simulation of violence between a husband and wife. Performed by two of the best ballet artists: Richardson Yadao and Ma. Celina Dofitas.

Like any of Redha’s work it is extremely physical and emotionally charged. This one is particularly heart rending. Dofitas has to be given a lot of credit especially in a sequence that to me, seemed to go on forever.

Richardson Yadao’s and Macel Dofitas’ Strength

Lasting just a few seconds, Richardson Yadao clambered on her while she was standing. His feet high in the air and slowly slid down. Not obvious is Dofitas’ hands and arms literally carrying him. That’s not all, she was also slowly walking during the sequence. The strength that it took for both dancers to execute that move, is mind boggling. All while projecting their emotions, on their face and movements.

Redha, however, had a more general interpretation of the piece, “When you put the human being in a middle of the conversation, of course there’s love and hate. It’s all the emotion that we generate in one day. It’s like a rollercoaster of emotion. So how do you put it in 35 minutes? These emotions can be transmitted and create a spectacle. You go on this journey with them in those very intense moments. The story talks about the human experience. How to be human in a situation.”

Transformative

Erl Sorilla during Premieres and Encores was both performer and choreographer. He said, “I’ve worked with Redha, twice already including Opera with Gabby Barredo. Redha’s style will always be transformative. It will always be exhausting but it will always get us to the edge of our technique. He has a different kind of process where he motivates you. He will tap different experiences in your persona and you really have to manifest that in your movement. That’s how transformative it is, the process.”

Sorilla also talked about Redha’s influence, “I can also see Redha’s influence in me as choreographer. Even in Kalisud. You know a lot of different choreographers I’ve worked with, I’ve seen in my pieces. I was able to incorporate it in Filipino context.”

Whatever’s In Your Heart

Ballerina Katrene San Miguel claimed they dug deep for Redha, “Its really a journey. Di mababaw, talagang may pinaghughugutan ka, inside of you, in your daily life. All the pieces meron siyang meaning. May hugot talaga. Lockdown ang aming naging tool sa pag gawa nitong piece ni Redha. Para ilabas lahat ng emotions namin, frustrations, everything. Lumabas yon lahat.

Katrene appreciates the real collaboration between dancer and choreographer, “He visualizes in his mind what you’re supposed to do. What he wants he wants. In how to execute it, he gives you some leeway. Technique wise he will give you freedom to do it on your own. To inject your own creativity and artistry. There’s collaboration that happens, an exchange. You tell him what you think. He tells you what you need to do. You interpret it, you collaborate.”

Redha was able to help them express themselves freely, “He told us to use our own language to express what’s inside. Whatever’s in your heart put it out. Even in the first piece, it was originally in French. Mahal Kita! He said use it in Filipino if you want para mas may feeling ka e. May freedom na binibigay si Redha kaya we love him so much.”
