Finally, the Manila City government has begun the vaccination of the A4 category, June 8, 2021. So far, succeeding days have been allotted. June 9 onwards BUT for a list of vaccination sites and verification of schedule log on to Manila Mayor Isko Moreno aka Yorme’s fb.
The malls opened are: Lucky Chinatown Mall, Robinson’s Place Ermita, SM Manila City Hall and SM San Lazaro.

Make sure to log on in order to verify changes in schedule which may change on a daily basis. Everyone who wants to be vaccinated who either live or work in Manila have to register in www.manilacovid19vaccine.ph And once registered, you have to bring a print out of the QR code, or bring the image file on your phone on the vaccination date.
BUT who qualifies to be in the A4 category?
To make things simple, if you can produce a company ID with a Manila address, they will most probably honor it. This is based on a quote from Yorme himself in an interview in ANC. The industries in the A4 category can vary from food manufacturing to logistics. For a full list from rappler log on here.

Cold Storage
The advantage of going to the malls for your vaccination are obvious to most if not all Filipinos. The VACCINE NATION program began in late March. And it prioritized, understandably: A1 (Medical Frontliners), A2 (Senior Citizens) and A3 ( People with Comorbidities). But most sites if not all were in Public schools here in Manila.
In several places elsewhere, they immediately tapped malls: Cebu, Antipolo, Tuge Vaccinate in Robinsons and SM Malls

Because Malls have large airconditioned areas that can be critical for the (temporary) storage and distribution of vaccines. The Sputnik V and Pfizer vaccines are sensitive to sunlight and heat.
Nurse Supervisor Gloria Inocencio, headed the vaccination process in Robinsons Place Manila. She was able to give a thorough explanation of the Sputnik vaccination last June 8.

“Sputnik is very sensitive. Manufacture niyan 0° to negative 80° degrees Celsius. Kasi lahat ng mga vaccine iba iba ang kanilang mga literature at temperature. Ang Sinovac plus 2° to 8° degrees Celsius. Sputnik 0° to negative 80° degrees Celsius parang Pfizer din yan. Kaya siguro kaya kami ginawa dito dahil malamig. Kasi hindi ito pwede sa sunlight. We avoid direct exposure kung di masisira ang vaccine. Ang second dose nito pagbalik ng 21 days. Kaya nga June 29 and second dose namin.”
Although the second dose already has a set date, it can also be earlier. Those who have received their first dose will receive a text message from the Manila COVID 19 system. Which may or may not indicate an earlier day for the second dose.

Malls as the Better Venue
Nurse Gloria noted that once the vaccine is taken out, it must immediately be administered, “Kaya nga na sabi ko kelangan malamig. Ma maintain, ma control namin ang temperature. SO kaya dito sa mall malamig. DI kami pwede sa vaccination school kasi mainit doon yung temperature. At least dito malamig. Kasi pag na turn namin yan within 2 hours, naka lagay niyan dapat iinject. Direct from here, direct to the patient. So we can maintain the temperature. Pag na expose na yan sa sunlight or mainit, sira na ang vaccine natin.”

But its not just the air-conditioning that makes malls the ideal site for vaccinations. Their wide interior spaces are also ideal. Mall Management have the experience of dealing with large crowds and being able to keep them comfortable.

Robinson’s Manila Mall Operations Manager, Malou Rhon was able to enumerate these advantages, “As soon as we heard there will be vaccination again in the mall. We got the call from the office of the mayor. We prepared space here. As you can see there are chairs, tables, of course aircon and well lighted. We also made sure the space has been disinfected. And communication with our team as well.”

Security personnel are also critical, Rhon said, “We have designated security to maintain the peace and order. And also yung entrance na gagamitin namin kung saan sila papasok. As well as the perimeter outside. These were the preparations we have undertaken when we found out about the vaccination for A4.”

Patience according to her is necessary from all the vaccinees. When dealing with large crowds everyone involved needs to be more patient, “ Part of our preparation nag lagay kami ng security. We also coordinated with our barangays to help us doon sa pila sa perimeter area. There will be complaints. There will be long lines. As long as we maintain our objective to manage, to implement social distancing, maintain security and seek help of barangay.”

Vaccination and the Economy
Of course vaccination prevents us as individuals from getting sick from COVID. Not everyone however, may be aware of how it impacts our economy. Rhon explained how vaccination will positively affect us as a whole, “This will give assurance on the consumers part. Mawawala yung takot ko. To deal with essential workers. Freely I can go, eat at restos because I know they have been vaccinated. Makakatulong sa ating ekonomiya, mawawala na yung fear of going out. Mabubuhay uli yung ekonomiya natin. Once everyone has been vaccinated.”
To this end there have been more Robinsons Malls that are also vaccination sites according to Rhon, “Yes marami itong Robinsons malls na nagiging vaccination site. To name a few Robinsons Novaliches, Robinsons Malabon. We also have Forum (Robinsons) I think, Robinson’s Galleria and Robinsons Magnolia. Robinsons Mall is open for this kind of activity in support of our government.”

Most people may be more familiar with all the malls mentioned above but FORUM may not be familiar to all. To quote the official Robinson’s site:
Forum Robinsons is a specialty mall within Cybergate, a modern business and residential complex at the corner of EDSA and Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City. Formerly Robinsons Place Pioneer, it was repositioned as a cyber lifestyle mall to better serve the needs of the tech generation, a large concentration of whom resides and works in the Cybergate community and neighboring cities.

Forum Robinsons highlights information technology product categories such as computers, cellphones and other mobile/wireless gadgets, digital cameras, and audio-video and computer gaming equipment. Complementing this mix are four anchor stores, four state-of-the-art cinemas including one 3D cinema, and a host of satisfying shopping, dining, amusement and service outlets. SM Cinemas Now Showing Vaccinations
Among the mall vaccination sites mentioned, SM Malls may be the ones that are the most comfortable. They managed to achieve this by using their cinemas. There are several phases of the vaccination: screening, counselling, vaccination and then monitoring and observation. And because the cinemas are inter-connected or have exits that lead to the next cinema, this makes them ideal for each separate phase.

And it was also in their site where they have an extra desk called VERIFICATION. This is the desk one goes to immediately after getting vaccinated. They verify if your information has been inputted in the system, thereby making sure that the first dose has been given. This is just another fail safe procedure to help make sure you have the right information, especially for your vaccination ID.

Creative Lucky Chinatown Mall
Initially there were some problems with a lot of people lining up for the vaccinations. But now they have already ironed it out. And for Lucky Chinatown Mall goers, it can really be worth the trip. Being in the heart of Binondo and near the commercial district of Divisoria as well, the mall taps into the rich history and culture of the area. After the vaccination they can visit exhibits and displays unique to the Megaworld Lifestyle branded mall.

There is an enormous Philippine flag made of hopia and mooncake. This was made in celebration of Philippine Independence day June 12. There’s also a walkway in the 3rd level Annex A, beside KUYA J. The walkway is covered in lanterns made by Hope Christian Highschool students with a Filipino-Chinese Friendship theme.

Another motivation for everyone to get vaccinated is the much anticipated opening of the BINONDO CHINATOWN MUSEUM at the 4th level of Lucky Chinatown Mall. It was originally set to open June 8 but has been moved until quarantine restrictions will be lifted.

Free Vaccines
Nurse Supervisor Gloria Inocencio gave sage advice to all those hesitant to get vaccinated now. She happens to be the Supervisor for District 5 (my home district of Paco), Manila Health Department. And she’s had about 27 years in service.

The urgency is that the vaccine now is free and later on whether its booster shots, may no longer be subsidized, “Nako kayo po kelangan magpa bakuna na kayo habang meron tayong bakuna. Kasi kelangan kelangan natin ito para tayo ay ma-iligtas sa COVID-19. Wag kayong matakot. I myself second dose nako, lahat kami. Kahit ano pang brand yan pwede. Ang impurtante ay vaccinated kayo. Sputnik man yan, Sinovac yan, Astra, Pfizer wag kayong mamili. Kung anung available grab it. Kasi libre. Susunod niyan may bayad na.”
