George Miller

Writer, director and producer George Miller is the diabolical mind behind the MAD MAX franchise which started in 1979. From Doof Wagon to WAR RIG

In this new wasteland, from George Miller’s mind is hyper violent and not just with elaborate chase sequences but vehicles designed for war. Way before FAST AND THE FURIOUS, MAD MAX was tearing up the road. These are vehicles that defy your wildest imagination and logic. My personal favorite is the Doof Wagon in FURY ROAD. Which has a guitarist hanging in front of a mining dump truck with a flamethrowing guitar. Behind him are 30 ft high speakers and behind that are 4 gigantic drums. Director George Miller explained to Conan O’Brien, “In war there’s always music. You need the guitars and drums over the V8 engines. The movie has its own internal logic.”

Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack also reminded me of a young Mel Gibson. Who was the original Mad Max in 1979 and 1981. Burke may have a more diverse and dramatic set of roles than Mad Mel, who has mostly done action and cop films.

Chris Hemsworth

There has to be that character who brings it all out of Furiosa. That is Dr. Dementus played by Chris Hemsworth. This is a complete turnaround from the roles identified with him. It won’t take long before viewers truly hate him. Since Hemsworth is known for his looks as Thor, god of thunder. How would you make him look even more menacing and evil? I think that’s why Director George Miller thought of adding a prosthetic nose on an otherwise perfect countenance.

Personally, I was a bit taken aback by the Aussie accent (for the role) and wondered if it was his real one. But found out, through his interviews Dr. Dementus is a combination of an auctioneer and his grandfather, more of an Aussie accent from 50 years ago.

Miller described, “He’s a person of many dimensions. Each one took me aback…The shooting process was 6 months and the editing another year. So I got to know of (his) Dr. Dementus in minute detail.” In the same interview with ABC News Australia, Chris shared that George suggested he journal as the character as an exercise. And came up with his own traumatic backstory that formed Dr Dementus. Which allowed him to decide when, where and how to reveal them.

In the presentation of Chris Hemsworth Walk of Fame, George Miller revealed that Chris’ dad Craig Hemsworth was one of the motorcycle riders in the first MAD MAX in 1979. But couldn’t complete the film because he was in University. Which is where Craig met his wife Leonie. “ They ended up becoming social workers who worked with troubled kids. Now, 45 years later I got to work with one of their sons, Chris… I got to know him as a professional working. Worked well beyond my expectations. In the way he brought people together.

It also deals with the stigma associated with it. Awareness of medical facts is important for the public. For example children with Down Syndrome occurs in 1 out of 800-1000 children. Causes of which are still unknown. While alcohol, drug abuse even smoking may negatively affect pre natal care, pregnancy, the syndrome still occurs even without them. The notion of it being a ‘punishment’, karma or irresponsibility of the mother is wrong.

The fact that screenwriter Ronald Allan Habon also decided to make Nadia as a single mom represents a current trend among modern marriages. As a number of separations have risen over the years. Candy Pangilinan as Nadia, the mother of Vanvan has given her most touching and challenging performance to date. Candy has shown her maturity as an actress. While the moments of warmth and maternal care are expected, the more painful and private scenes where her thoughts are tempted to ‘give up’ are more real and powerful. Director Randolph Longjas shared that Candy’s performance came from somewhere honest. It comes from her real life experience as a mother whose child suffers from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Longjas revealed that Candy was a calming presence for everyone on set. She was an acting coach, mother figure for her cast mates. In spite of the multiple functions Candy delivered exceptionally well as an actress and may lead to even more critically acclaimed roles in the future.

Mara Marasigan is another example of multiple functions in the role of Jessica, the childhood love of Acey Aguilar (Tano) the older brother of Vanvan. Mara is also the assistant director, taking care of nitty gritty details in filmmaking. She is a founding member of the EGG Theater Company, which recently produced SCHISM for FRINGE Festival. Mara was able to help the production by casting her father, theater and film director Dennis Marasigan for a cameo as the family doctor.

Young Actors

The film has a wealth of impressive young actors not least of which is Jadford Dilanco (Kid Vanvan). Jad is the young version of Vanvan and was the product of an exhaustive search for director Randolph. Paolo Pingol was easier to find after his popular McDonald’s TVC was released back in 2013. Jad on the other hand has the similar charm and comfort in front of the camera as Paolo. Luiza Nikki Ellis as Older Vanvan’s love interest Nicole was also a good discovery for direk Randolph.

Isaac Aguirre as the young Tano – older brother of Vanvan had an interesting role. While he is ‘normal’, it was only natural that he bears some envy from the extra attention that their mom Nadia was showering on Vanvan. If there’s one thing that STAR NA SI VAN DAMME STALLONE could be criticized for is that it should show even more scenes that had special children function, which was one of its goals. Perhaps showing some activities apart from studying, like working long term could also be shown in a sequel. This movie will undoubtedly touch many hearts and educate a lot of minds as well.

Delectable Pastries & More

An eye-catching array of pastries was served during the opening, almost like a best of hits: Choco Dipped Croissant topped with Almonds, Fruit & Nut Cookies from EPICURIOUS, m&m cookies, Banana loaf, choco chip cookies from CRAVINGS. There’s Brookies, Apple Pie, Red Velvet Reeses Cupcake and Salted Caramel Macaroon from WICKED. All these shops along with Rustan’s and True Value can be found in Shang Plaza Mall.

Apart from the pastries is the special bite sized appetizers from SPATZLE located at the East Wing of Shang Mall. I ate them so quickly I was not able to photograph them. Arancini Balls is perfect for the Pinoy palate: risotto rice balls stuffed with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Their Carbonara was also bite sized; you can have their garlic breadsticks in Moutabal dip. SPATZLE gives a great taste of accessible European cuisine along with pastries such as Banana Bread Florentina, Red Velvet Cake and Toffee Pudding.

Café Literature

Long before the age of laptops and tablets, cafés were gathering places for the most notable writers, artists and thinkers. Hemingway wrote, “big principal cafes where people were lost in them, and no one noticed them, and they could be alone and in them and be together.” In the 1920s Ernest Hemingway met Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound as a young correspondent in Paris. The City of Lights’ cafes have inspired this event as well. What better accompaniment to coffee than reading their work or books in general? National Bookstore, Powerbooks have a selection of good reads on coffee. Astrovision displays its own collection of Jazz titles as well.

Soulful Jazz

Perhaps what makes this event special is the combination of exceptional Jazz artists that are on hand to soothe you as you partake in the best java available. Cool voices like Cara Manglapus can be heard on March 28, rounded off by Vince Lahora on March 29. Bands like THE BRASS MUNKEYS, THE EXECUTIVE BAND and Moira Dela Torre have already crooned to audiences at the East Atrium the previous week.

THE BRASS MUNKEYS featured their new vocalist Christopher Villanueva originally from Rockabilly/punk band HILERA. Villanueva along with former members of HILERA are also working on a project with Ely Buendia & PUPIL. During the opening THE BRASS MUNKEYS had a wonderful up-tempo mix of Beautiful Maria, Stray Cats Strut, In the Mood, Tequila, Mambo no.5 and King of Swing.

Last Sunday Listening to vocalist Ricky Quiogue of THE EXECUTIVE BAND is always a pleasure. Ricky has his own unique voice, which can be described as a cross between the raspy style of Louis Armstrong and subtle voice of Tony Bennett. They also have a new female vocalist in Marie Puyat.

What comes across with THE EXECUTIVE BAND is their passion and enjoyment in playing the standards and classics, which translates very well in their sound. Quiogue did wonderfully in C’est Si Bon, Birth of the Blues and Just the Way You Are. Marie Puyat had that silky, sultry touch in Smooth Operator and Wind Beneath My Wings. This weekend promises to be an even bigger draw with Cara Mangalpus and Vince Lahora as performers.

Cine Europa, the festival featuring the best European films is now on its 15^th year in Shang Plaza Mall. Filipino audiences can watch these films for free from September 6-16, 2012 at Shang Cineplex. European Union Political Counselor Julian Vassallo said, “Starting with just 11 films in 1998, Cine Europa has grown and with this year’s line up of 21 European films and 4 Filipino films. In the last 15 years the festival has brought European quality films to more than 200,000 film enthusiasts. Last year alone we reached 24,000. And we hope to make another leap in viewers in 2012.”

More and more countries have joined the fest according to Vasallo, “This year’s films come from the 17 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and for the first time Norway.” Through KLM one lucky viewer may also have the chance to see Europe through a raffle.

Vasallo also noted the depth of emotion European films are known for compared to their Hollywood counterparts, “As you have noticed by now European cinema is less known for sugary sweet movies with happy endings. And for films that find the absurd the humorous and the ironic in our daily lives that shine a torch in the forgotten pockets of our societies.”

Shangri La Plaza Gen Mgr and EVP Lala Fojas also explained that Filipinos and Europeans have a shared passion for film, “This commonality allows us to get to know each other’s roots and practices, respect each other’s diversity, improve our mutual understanding and to a deeper extent share the joys and sorrows of the human spirit. There is more therefore to Cine Europa than just visual entertainment. Cine Europa provides a venue for active dialogue of cultures and beliefs through the magic of cinema.”

According to her there is a great range among the many titles, “With a parade of carefully selected films from 17 different countries, this year’s roster with its great mix of genres including drama, comedy, romance, history and family oriented films will surely delight our film fest aficionados. We would also like to welcome the newest addition to this year’s roster from the Embassy of Norway, with its film “Upperdog” which also opens this year’s festival. Surely this new participant will add flavor to our already exciting line up of multi-awarded films.”

The 15^th edition is more than just entertainment. The Independent Filmmaker’s Multipurpose Cooperative (IFC) will be helping them organize activities apart from just watching movies. Fojas added, “A major highlight of this year’s edition are talks on September 8 and 15 on film appreciation analysis, financing and film making at 11am at the Premiere Theatre. This will be followed by the screening of 2 Filipino independent films at 1 and 4 pm. We thank the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines for honoring our local talents by including them in this year’s roster.”

Another partner for this year’s fest is the Film Development Council of the Phil. FDCP Chairman Briccio Santos was able to talk about which programs is directly related to the fest, “We’re glad that Shang Cineplex continues to host this festival year after year among other great festivals that it hosts in its theaters. Through FDCP’s Cinemateque Program we are bringing these films to more Filipinos nation wide. These stories and sensibilities through FDCP’s Cinematque will reach Davao, Baguio and Ilo-ilo. And we are looking forward to host our EU delegation as well in these venues.”

France is one of the many European countries who have stepped up in terms of film relations with our country. French Audio Visual Attaché Martin Macalintal said, “Cultural Counselor Christian Merer has always pushed cinema as a priority cooperation program. You’re speaking of public diplomacy and the cultural diplomacy of France in the Phil. Cinema is a number one priority. It is not a secret. You might also find in our website we are pushing for further development of relations between France and the Phil and therefore Europe through cinema.”

If there are still any doubters to the exchange of films / talent that have been spawned through the relationship of European countries and ours, one only has to look at recent successes like Brillante Mendoza. Macalintal continued, “It’s a long-term process. But through the years finally we’ve been able to bring in a French actress, Isabelle Huppert nonetheless to act in Brillante Medoza’s film.” “Captive” is currently being shown commercially in theaters and “Thy Womb” which stars Nora Aunor got 3 awards in Venice, Italy: Bisato D’Oro, Venezia Cinema prize and the P. Nazareno Taddei Award Special Mention. “Thy Womb” will also be shown commercially in Manila.

The significance of the total number of audiences last year who watched Cine Europa are not just getting entertained. He surmised, “That’s 24,000 Filipinos being aware of the diversity of cultures in the world. Not everybody speaks English. In Cine Europa you see German, you see French you, see Spanish, Czech name it! It’s a whole diversity of culture that these 24,00 Filipinos get to watch and to appreciate every year.”

The Beggar (Leon Lai) transformed himself. He shaved his beard but his hair remained long and wore a silk robe. He alone stood between the army of assassins his weapon is a long black steel folding fan.  A dozen of them attacked him with spears. In a split second he unfurls the fan shielding himself and decapitates his attackers by using the razor sharp edge of the fan. Away from the fray, an assassin climbs up the wall to the room of their target. The beggar sees him, picks up a long bamboo pole and thrusts it on the assassin. What makes the scene powerful is how the choreography convinces viewers that one man can defeat more than 50 men. Although acrobatic it flows in its own logic and captivating pace.

“Bodyguards and Assassins” can be seen for free as part of the 6th Spring Film Festival at the Shang Cineplex in Shangri La Plaza mall from January 20-29, 2012. The action is only a detail to the more important context of the story. The film is actually probably one of the most important historical accounts of the modern revolutionary history of China. Dr. Sun Yat Sen, then the leader and founder of the Nationalist movement, was coming to Hong Kong in order to visit his ailing mother. The Qing Empire will do everything in its power to stop the man who challenges their rule.

The story is based on actual event in 1906 and the great personal sacrifices made to protect Dr. Sun from the assassins. Li Yu Tang (Xueqi Wang) is a tycoon who owns the local newspaper and gets drawn into the revolution.  The historical backdrop that wasn’t dealt with in the film was the great corruption and excess of the empire’s rule in China. This caused a huge amount of poverty and suffering in what was already one of the largest populations in the world.

Xueqi Wang won the Asian Film award for Best Actor for his role as Li Yu Tang. He also won the Asian Film award for best Supporting actor for “Forever Enthralled” which was shown last year in the 5^th Spring film fest also in Shang Plaza. Circumstances force Li Yu Tang to choose between right and wrong even when it jeopardizes his many business interests. He assembles a group of unlikely heroes to safeguard Dr. Sun who is recognized as the father of this new movement to free China.

He has a spectacular fight scene against a royal henchman played by UFC star Cung Le. Apart from his current movie roles, Cung Le was the Strikeforce Middleweight champion until it was bought by the UFC. Wanderlei “Axe Murderer” Silva handed a KO loss to Cung Le in his UFC debut late last year. Leon Lai (The beggar) is one of four Canto pop superstars that the Hong Kong media has designated as Four Heavenly Kings. The Bio channel airs separate features on them, which includes: Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok and Jacky Cheung. Lai also co-starred with Xueqi wang in “Forever Enthralled” as the lead actor Mei Lan Fang. Another interesting character is Wang Fu Min affectionately called “Stinky Tofu.” He is played by the 7 foot tall, Mengke Bateer. The character is very similar to Jaws (Richard Kiel) in 007 films like “Moonraker” and “The Spy Who Loved Me.” In this case, Stinky Tofu is on the side of the good guys.
