I used to laugh at them. Easily fitting the definition of a fanatic: Noranians, Vilmanians, Sharonians, Jolinians, Coco Martinians. ANY fan base of stars who walk out of the MMFF awards night believing their idols were cheated out of an award.  The reaction seemed too drastic to the point of being laughable.

I would very easily mock them UNTIL I became one of them. The difference being I couldn’t walk out. I was photographing the 50th MMFF Gabi Ng Parangal awards night, December 27, 2024 and didn’t have the luxury of doing so.

Stars

Although I believe I had a ‘better’ reason why I was so emotionally invested in ISANG HIMALA. I am just as much a fan of not just Aicelle Santos, or Bituin Escalante but the whole cast. They could have won an ensemble award, in my humble opinion. Last September I photographed David Ezra as singer in SAYAW TUNGO SA KALAYAAN under National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes. Ezra plays Orly the filmmaker/cameraman in this version of HIMALA.

CCP VP & Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan reminded me that Aicelle had a stellar run in GMA Network’s Pinoy Pop Superstar. While earning second place, it got her a GMA talent contract. At the time, Marasigan worked as Stage Manager of Party Pilipinas, where he first met her. This was when he encouraged her to go into theater. The rest as they say is ‘history’. Aicelle became lead star in KATY THE MUSICAL! (2013), RAK F AEGIS (2014), HIMALA: ISANG MUSIKAL (2018). But it was the huge success of RAK that propelled her to stardom on stage and music, the public consciousness.

Bituin Escalante is a star to anyone who has ever heard her Aretha-like voice in innumerable concerts. And incidentally another hit show HIMALA, also from PETA. I’ve witnessed both of their performances live and know their rich resumes. That’s exactly why I wanted more awards for them. For anyone covering theater, ballet, CCP, music, they are 1000% stars. Definitely, considered true artists in their own fields.

For Theater

My attachment wasn’t just in the cast but for Philippine Theater. This was supposed to be the coming out party. THE project to make the masses see, hear and appreciate what theater is all about (albeit in cinema form). Or at least consider it more. Not unlike the megahit WICKED. Aicelle and Bito is just as talented as Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Perhaps they could have marketed it better as a musical riding on the WICKED wave so to speak. Just a small suggestion in an otherwise successful production by Director Pepe Diokno, second year in a row. He helmed GOMBURZA last year.

The same genius mind who wrote the original HIMALA (and ISANG HIMALA) is National Artist Ricky Lee. Also wrote GREEN BONES with Angeli Atienza and a concept by JC Rubio. The script was not ‘traditional’ also incorporating sign language, according to Atienza. Any script would need t be brought to life. In short, it was a very balanced distribution of trophies in an unusually strong batch of entries. Befitting the 50th anniversary of MMFF trying to veer away from its commercial image to a more credible, creative reputation.

That’s why the numbers of the box office earnings weren’t announced. So there wouldn’t be that bandwagon effect of audiences choosing what is perceived to be the more ‘popular’. Awards mean something, that’s why I wanted more of it for ISANG HIMALA.

I was like Vice Ganda asking for more explanations during her speech after she won the SPECIAL JURY CITATION. Wondering if it was for her performance or for the film or which category. (It was for her performance). Again, very articulately justified. So please, watching the awards night and listening carefully is warranted for anyone like me and Vice seeking clarity.

Tagle’s Insight

I found the clarity and insight I was looking for in an unexpected source. Lest I be accused of religiosity, I was searching for Ray Fiennes’ interviews and CONCLAVE featurettes. As it has a lot of Oscar buzz. When a video of Cardinal Tagle’s 2024 National Eucharistic Congress homily from Indianapolis, Indiana appeared in my feed. Although, he was referring to the Church’s missionary endeavor, he set me straight.
