Even if Klara (Andrea Petrik) had a few too much to drink she still saw Ernõ (Ervin Nagy) in the dim light combing Kincsem’s coat in the stable. As he turned away she slipped between him and the horse. She was able to deftly unbutton her blouse revealing her heaving cleavage and whispered “Take me..” As much as Ernõ wanted her, he knew it was wrong. “Klara please go home.” She couldn’t believe it the known womanizer, gambler, scoundrel that was Ernõ Blaskovich rejected her. What she didn’t know was that he respected and loved her so much, it took all of his self-control not to have her this way.

The following morning Erno saw Klara skating on a frozen pond. Half the town’s children gleefully skated on the hardened surface from winter’s cold. As she slipped, he caught her from behind and lifted her up. She was glad it was Ernõ who caught her. “That wasn’t me last night. I would never give myself to you sober.” Smiling he responded, “Are you angry with yourself or me?”

The line up includes the very controversial GENEZIS (Genesis), set in the turbulent era of 2008- 2009 attacks of Hungarian Neo Nazis on Roma villages. There’s something for everyone: coming of age film MOSCOW SQUARE set in 1989, comedy BRAZILOK and animated feature TALES FROM THE LAKESIDE.

Undefeated Kincsem

Kincsem is the most successful racehorse in history. The Magic Mare has reached mythic proportions in its native Hungary. According to Wikipedia ‘Hungarian for “My Precious” or “My Treasure”; March 17, 1874 – March 17, 1887) was a Thoroughbred race horse who has the most wins of any unbeaten horse in the history of the sport, having won 54 races from 54 starts.’ The second best record by Black Caviar is a distant 25 wins in 25 starts.

As an indication of how she is revered, Hungary’s premier racecourse located in Budapest is named in her honor: Kincsem Park. ‘There is a life sized statue of her by the entrance to the old grandstand. Smaller statues of her can be found in the Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park in California and the Newmarket Horseracing Museum in England. Blaskovich’s stud farm now houses the Kincsem Equestrian Park and Kincsem Museum, which contains a room devoted to the mare’s career. Her skeleton, a hoof and her feeding trough are on display at the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture.’

The real life Blaskovich Mansion figured prominently in the movie. Located in Tápiószentmárton, which also happens to be the hometown of Hungarian Ambassador to the Philippines Dr. József Bencze. Historic Tápiószentmárton

The Blaskovich Mansion, the ancestral home of her breeder figured prominently in the movie. The location Tápiószentmárton, is a village in Pest County in Hungary. This storied area also happens to be the hometown of Hungarian Ambassador to the Philippines Dr. József Bencze.

Hungarian Revolution of 1848

Director Gábor Herendi and screenwriter Bálint Hegedûs took a lot of liberties with their dramatic license. To a certain extent you understand why they have to do it to make the movie more ‘entertaining’. But one of the real life events that is in the background of the story is the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. There was a reversal of fortunes of those involved with the failed coup attempt of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. Major characters in the story either suffered or greatly benefitted post revolution in 1849 when the film begins.

Knowing some of the historical facts would help one’s understanding of the plot especially for international audiences. The geographical and historical context of the uprising were never discussed or dealt with in the film. It was a period when Hungary was part of the Austrian empire. The Revolution of 1848 was a quest for Hungarian independence. No wonder the story of Kincsem is intertwined with national identity.

Franz Joseph I’s Holy Alliance

According to Wikipedia “The revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary grew into a war for total independence from the Habsburg dynasty. Being one of the most determinative events in Hungary’s modern history, it is also one of the cornerstones of the Hungarian national identity. After a series of serious Austrian defeats in 1849, the Austrian Empire came close to the brink of collapse. The young emperor Franz Joseph I had to call for Russian help in the name of the Holy Alliance. Tsar Nicholas I answered, and sent a 200,000 strong army with 80,000 auxiliary forces. Finally, the joint army of Russian and Austrian forces defeated the Hungarian forces. After the restoration of Habsburg power, Hungary was placed under brutal martial law. The anniversary of the Revolution’s outbreak, 15 March, is one of Hungary’s three national holidays.” Source:

These historical figures make appearances in the film: Emperor Franz Joseph I played by Ernõ Fekete and Russian royalty Alexander II played by Zoltán Seress.

Unlikely Romance

What would make the movie more compelling than a love story? Obviously Director Gábor Herendi and screenwriter Bálint Hegedûs knew this and weaved a romance on the opposite sides of the political spectrum of the time. This is where they may have added much dramatic color to make it more entertaining.

They also made the protagonist Count Ernõ Blaskovich more human and believable by giving him what would be considered weaknesses: an affinity for alcohol, a penchant for going to brothels and what today would be considered as a gambling addiction.

Of course he had to be played by a tall, dark and handsome actor in Ervin Nagy. He had to make up for it in the looks department. Audiences love him in spite of being such a drunkard. Gambling addicts are obsessed with that thrill of putting everything on the line. It’s the risk that they are so addicted to.

Box Office Hit

Maybe just maybe this bravado of risking everything would help make his fortune. The movie allows viewers to take the thrilling ride of a horse race. A lot more than financial fortunes are at stake like national pride and of course, love.

Andrea Petrik plays Klara von Oettingen, an heiress who has a love for riding horses. She overcomes her affliction—polio to fulfill her passion. (Incidentally, the once eradicated disease has made a return to the Philippines very recently.) Petrik’s soulful blue eyes could melt any man’s heart. It’s the chemistry between these actors that have made KINCSEM one of the biggest box office hits in Hungary and a must see for Filipino movie goers.
