If there’s anything that Lilia B Yang was known for apart from her generosity is her love for food. Last December 9, 2012, Maggie Yum threw her a lavish advanced birthday bash at the Summer Palace in EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. My aunt’s birthday is actually on December 26 and I had never seen her as happy as I did on that day.

Maggie’s gesture was doubly touching, as she is one of my aunt’s many adopted daughters. Her whole name is Magdalen Yum and is the daughter of family friend Ernest and Mary Yum who immigrated to Hong Kong from Manila. Her father Ernest believed that the quality of education in the Philippines is superior and wanted Maggie to go back here for college. Tita Lily volunteered to let her board at her home and took her in.

Maggie took up Accounting in Ateneo De Manila University wanting to follow her idol Lily’s foot steps who was already Financial Director of Sycip, Salazar Hernandez Gatmaitan Law Firm. Maggie eventually became First Vice President Investments at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Knowing full well of Lily’s love for Chinese food Maggie wanted to give her a truly memorable meal and thought of the Summer Palace at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. We had our weekly lunches in Gloria Maris and Choi Garden both in the Greenhills area. But Maggie wanted something even more special. Tta Lily’s closest colleagues and relatives were there, Atty. Andy Gatmaitan and family, former Justice Feliciano and wife Virginia, Bonnie Sycip and family and Randy Salazar.

Birthday noodles with Sea Food, Chilled Assorted Mushrooms with Crabmeat, Avocado Salad Roll, Barbecued Taro in Bacon Roll, Chilled Fresh Scallop with Mango, Double Boiled cordysap soup with sea Cucumber and chicken, Hot Prawn Salad with Fruit Cocktail, Roasted Peking Duck, Fried Fish Fillet Topped with Apple and other fruits, Minced Duck Meat bedded on a lettuce, Stewed Pork Belly Served with Steamed bun, Hot Almond Cream, Deep Fried sesame balls with red bean paste and Steamed Birthday bun.
