Charice Pempengco returns as her Fil-Am character Sunshine Corazon in one of the biggest hits on TV: Glee. This time she tries to help Glee club members to raise money for their regional competition in New York. The episode is no. 17 of season 2 for Glee entitled: “Night of Neglect”.

One stereotype that the Glee perpetuates is Asians are good in academics. Five Glee members resent the fact that they don’t get support from the school or attention from their co-Glee club members as part of the ‘Smarty Pants’ team. When Will asks them, ‘Why are Tina and Mike (Chang) in the Smarty Pants team?’ Puck (Mark Salling) Answers, “Because they’re the two Asians?” Interestingly enough both Asian regular cast members have non-Asian last names: Jenna Ushkowitz and Harry Shum Jr.

Smarty Pants is a quiz competition that students participate in and our very own Sunshine is also competing against them. Their quiz team needed an additional member and was forced to ask a cheer leader Brittany (Heather Morris) to join them. Sunshine was beating them at almost every point. That is until the category of Cat Diseases came up andBrittanyslayed them with her knowledge of it.

Heather Morris plays Brittany and saves the day with her Cat knowledge in the Smarty Pants competition.

The Smarty Pants competition is the main reason that Sunshine helps the Glee club even though she’s from another school. She can relate to the troubles of having to raise money for regionals. One of the main reasons that they let her help are her 600 followers on Twitter. In real life Charice has been nominated to the Shorty Awards, which honors the best Celebrity Tweets and has 409,077 followers from around the world. (This is the link to the official Charice Twitter). The ETC channel also flashed facebook messages by fans during the show on why they love Glee.

Sunshine wins them over by singing ‘All by Myself’ originally performed by Eric Carmen in 1975, according to Wikipedia. The music is based on Sergei Rachamanioff’s piano concerto no.2. Apart from being a remake by Charice’s idol Celine Dion, the song is a favorite track of her mother Racquel. Charice often dedicates the song for her mom.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly Holiday, Will Schuster’s love interest.

The episode also features a vocal performance by Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly Holiday, Will Schuster’s love interest. Holly is a fantastic history teacher who goes into classes as the historical figure she discusses. The interest surrounding Charice in spite of Paltrow being on the show is unbelievable. Our kababayan has gotten far more ink or media attention on her appearance in Glee. Gwyneth is an A-list celebrity inHollywood who has had Top 40 hits herself and a duet with Huey Lewis. Javier Bardem and Anne Hathaway have been confirmed as future guests on Glee.

One of my personal favorites in the show is Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). Sue puts together her ‘League of Doom’ in a bid to destroy her nemesis Will Schuster (Matthew Morrison. Sue always has the best lines in the show. For this episode however I’d give that honor to Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky) the Glee Coach Will replaced. When Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson) shuddered at the thought of Ryan staring at him he said, “You should be concerned I’m not just gay. I’m predatory gay.”

Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones deals with her inner Diva and learns humility.

The main lesson for this episode is for performers. The saying “the show must go on” is learned by the Glee club members. The greatest Filipino rapper who ever lived, Francis Magallona showed this by example to Gloc 9. “Whether there are 6 or 6 thousand people watching you it should be the same effort” for the complete article on Gloc9 quoting Francis M scroll down or click on this link. The Glee members learned it the hard way but came out a lot better afterwards. The cast will appreciate the lesson long after their experience with the show is done.
