Bruno is a washed up writer just trying to eke out a living tutoring because it’s more convenient and pays more than a teacher. Luca is a typical teenager who gets on everyone’s nerves, belligerent, aimless, hates school. They were perfect for each other, as Bruno disliked teaching or making him do anything. Bruno was actually one of the cooler grown ups in Luca’s life until one day when things take a dramatic turn. Marina (Arianna Scommegna), Luca’s mom has to work in Africa as a translator. She tells Bruno that Luca is actually his son and asks to live with him for 6 months while she’s away.

SCIALA is one of many European films that can be seen for free at the CINE EUROPA 17 screened at Shang Cineplex, Shangri La Plaza Mall. Cine Europa film fest will run in Shang Mall in Mandaluyong from September 11-21, 2014.

Cine Europa will then move to other cities: Baguio Cinematheque from September 23-28, Ilo-ilo Cinematheque from September 30 to October 5, Ayala Center Cinema in Cebu from October 10-12, Visayas State University in Leyte and then Tacloban from October 21-26. Davao will host the screenings from October 28-November 2, Zamboanga Cinematheque from November 4-9 and concluding screenings in Liceo De Cagayan University in Cagayan De Oro from November 13-16.

In Italy it has evolved into a more commonly used term by teenagers meaning take it easy or relax. SCIALA is deceptively simple but the film allows us to see the power of literature. Poetic ancient words still have that same moving influence in our modern world if we only listen to it. Novels, poems even classical music are able to inspire people around Bruno even if he seems so jaded and the one who actually delivers them.

Just like the many poets of old SCIALA also includes the gritty, urban side of Rome’s hip-hop scene. Twelve tracks of the original soundtrack were produced by The Ceasars and sung by the Italian rapper Amir Issaa. The song “Scialla” won the “Premio Cinema Giovane” for the best original soundtrack.

The soundtrack includes QUESTA E ROMA (THIS IS ROME) by rapper Amir Issaaa aka China. The music creates that perfect feel and atmosphere in the dangerous neighborhoods of the ancient city. Amir has written songs about immigrant children who have grown up in Italy but do not have the same rights as those whose parents are Italian citizens. His cause is like that of Fil-Am Jose Antonio Vargas in the U.S.

Luca seems like a lost cause at 16. He’s a product of his environment that glorifies money, wealth, fame even violence. His main ambition in life is to be a drug pusher. Filippo Scicchitano, who makes his debut in this film, plays Luca. He’s big for his age and is a toughie, into boxing and bully’s his younger friends and even grown ups. Scicchitano shows his incredible versatility early in his career. He convincingly played the gay best friend in the film FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT screened at the Italian Film Festival that was also held at Shang Rila Plaza Mall. The two roles couldn’t be more different and polar opposites. Scicchitano has a bright a future ahead of him almost chameleon like from one interesting role to the next.

Fabrizio Bentivoglio plays the biographer/tutor Bruno Beltrame with a very sympathetic and endearing quality. Bruno is one of those people who’s undeniably brilliant but has been through so much in life they’ve already given up. As a means to bolster his income he readily gives his services as ghostwriter to rich people doing their autobiography.

The hot Barbora Bobulova is cast as Tina, the wealthy former porno star who hires Bruno as ghostwriter. Bobulova is a red haired version of Scarlett Johanssen and has even more charms, curves and sex appeal. Although Tina is retired from the pornographic career she still has the looks. She plays Chopin to relax and often discusses the great novelists with Bruno.

Luca is hard headed as ever ruining not only his life but also that of Bruno’s. Eventually, Italian literature helps save them both. There is this genuine love for knowledge, history, culture that results from a traumatic experience. The movie is for anyone who has ever lost hope and wants to regain inspiration through eloquent words. Who would ever think that a quote from Pasolini could change their fate?
