Love it or hate it, my face that is, no surgery, no implants, no matter what "they" say. Decided I'd shoot myself in to reveal some truths about "beauty" and hope it makes you all easier on yourself.

In what may be the most candid interview on Oprah by a Hollywood star, Teri Hatcher explained why she took pictures of herself without make up after a shower and posted it on her facebook fan site. After a photo shoot by Matthew Rolston for the latest season of Desperate Housewives, Hatcher went home to relax. “After I came out of the shower I used my Blackberry which I take everywhere I go and took pictures of myself. I wanted to show the truth.” The show was re aired last night on Oprah at DIVA Universal. Better known as DIVA for short, it is one of the newest cable channels airing the marathon countdown episodes of Oprah before the airing on Winfrey’s new network.

Hatcher also shot a personal video of herself waking up at 4am and showed her transformation on the make up chair of the show. She said she was “never into the social networking thing but thought that putting it on facebook would be a great way to share how I really looked.” Seeing herself in the glammed up photo which included her new co star Vanessa Williams made her feel like it wasn’t representative of who she really was as a person.

Several newspapers have since picked up the photos and has been praised for shattering the unattainable physical perfection that women see and idealize everyday. She admitted to having to put Botox once but resented the fact that tabloids have speculated on her having cosmetic surgeries on various parts of her body. The reason she came on Oprah was to get the ball rolling in the discussion of body image especially for women ‘growing older.’ Personally and honestly as a guy, I’m still very much attracted to Teri Hatcher without make up fresh from the shower, even when she speaks about her imperfections like dark circles and wrinkles.
For a lot of people Hatcher has been a true hero in every sense of the word. On the BIO network’s feature on her, she was able to show her courage in another arena. Upon learning that a sexual abuser was on trial, she also discovered that the suspect was someone from her past. Hatcher immediately contacted the prosecution and volunteered her testimony. Hatcher had been one of his victims and she testified her own experience. At this point she already had a successful career as an actress and was not worried with the consequences. Many other child and teen victims surfaced when news broke out of her testimony. The prosecuting attorney squarely credited their legal victory to Hatcher.

Teri is able to show her inner beauty with the courage that she has shown and her desire to uplift the self image of women everywhere. Sybil Shepherd and Linda Evans were also guests on Oprah for that episode. I was having dinner as my mom insisted on putting the set on Oprah, the episode before that showed her giving an Australia trip for her 25th anniversary audience. No less than John Travolta came off a mock up of the Qantas Jet that landed on the set as their pilot.
Oprah is an example of how powerful, uplifting and inspiring a television show can be. On one hand it can be extremely commercial, plugging Qantas, Australia, even the free waterproof smart phones from Motorola that were also handed out to the audience who went on the trip. On another episode it deals with Women’s self image issues just as in the case of Teri Hatcher, Sybil Shepherd and Linda Evans. The episode after Teri was Portia De Rossi’s interview on her autobiography “Unbearable Lightness.” The book explains her struggles with Anorexia, bulimia and on hiding her homosexuality.

Photo and Caption by Teri Hatcher from facebook fansite: 45 year old me. Just me wanting to teach that all those glam versus trash pictures of celebs are about LIGHTING. It's not makeup it's not surgery or botox its LIGHT. Flat front light in your face especially sun setting 4pm light blows out all wrinkles and imperfections. Over head light, sun anything casts shadows under your eye from your brow making you look tired. Shoot all family reunion photos that way over the camera man who should be holding the camera a little higher than your eye line.
There is this delicate but understandable balance between creating an audience by giving stuff away and real issues. Most of the time Oprah deals with a lot of concerns that help improve the lives of her viewers, such as in health with the Dr. Phil segments, or culinary skills with Rachel Ray. Both of whom have had successful spin offs. She also has a lot of celebrities on her show but it’s never in a stupid way where they feature famous people for their own sake or when they do that, it’s balanced with an important issue. In my humble opinion, we need people like Teri Hatcher and Oprah Winfrey here in Philippine media, who are courageous and willing to speak the truth. And I sincerely believe we have them, we just need to recognize them and give them the spotlight they deserve.

I was SO HONORED to be asked. AND YOU ALL were a huge part of that. Those "naked" photos started a conversation about truth, real beauty and aging in and out of Hollywood, and Oprah wanted to continue it in a big way. And when Oprah calls, well, I answer. Look for is to air sometime the week of September 21st. It's a great show. We had an insightful talk and she is nothing short of a rock star. Thank you Oprah.
Very Nice Article about a movie star above 40. It is inspiring to know that Teri has the courage to show herself without makeup in Hollywood where youth and beauty reign supreme. Hollywood is not kind to these women. I hope more movie stars like her show themselves as they are.
Thank you so much Kathy! I guess we’re all fans of Teri, not just for her physical beauty but for her courage and generosity. i have an upcoming article on Charice at the recent Pacquiao fight i think you’ll also like. i hope to see you here soon.
Seriously, though, her face DEFINITELY looks like she’s got filler injected in the nasolabial folds, and in the “tear troughs” below her eyes. She has that almost cartoon monkey look of a full lower face and round cheeks – it’s so common on people who have had it done.
I do not think it is a bad or a negative thing at all – but I do think Ms Hatcher skirts the entire issue when she says she hasn’t had “surgery” or “implants”. Perhaps not – but filler? Absolutely.
Layne, i’m not going to pretend to be an authority on Teri hatcher. But the whole point of her taking less than flattering pictures of herself is to show that she’s not afraid to show herself this way. If she admits to doing botox once before and that was it, i’m inclined to believe her.
When you say it DEFINITELY looks like it you’re just speculating / guessing on the procedure. She’s not skiriting any issue at all.
Jude:
When I say “definitely” it means that I know women – including my sister – who have had fillers, and they look exactly like that. After a while it settles in, and softens. But it’s the trademark look of filler in the tear troughs and nasolabial folds. A very full lower face. As I said, I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all – I think it makes women look great. But I don’t appreciate Ms Hatcher claiming she hasn’t done it. Because what that means is – you cannot really believe anything she says. If she’s fudging on that …
Sometimes when TV shows or some tabloids show celebs they suspect had plastic surgery done, they have a plastic surgeon or doctor to examine the photos or video footage. EVEN then, they’re just guessing and they admit it. they say “it appears so and so had this done… But we can’t be absolutely sure.” Unless you’re a doctor who has actually examined Teri hatcher’s face in person OR she readily admits to having the procedure done, you are ALSO just speculating.
