IF LOTR had incest, rape, homosexuality, adultery, sadomasochism, treachery, deceit, murder, conspiracy upon conspiracy it would be Game of Thrones. GOT makes LOTR & The Hobbit look like a Disney version, filtering out the worst, most vicious parts of human nature while creator George RR Martin has no qualms in mixing it in with heroism and nobility. (this is the first article of a series)

The complexity of the GOT universe lends itself to the miniseries genre. The TV format with many episodes stretching seasons allows for greater character development and subplots. HBO is known for having sex and violence in its many award winning series like: The Sopranos, Sex In the City, Deadwood, most recently TRUEBLOOD and True Detective which casts movie stars Rachel McAdams, Collin Farrell & Vince Vaughn.

It’s very difficult to imagine anyone else being able to pull off GOT other than HBO. GOT has become a worldwide phenomenon subtitled in every major language from Chinese to Portuguese. At the end of season 5 it broke the downloading records with 1.5 million in one day, which is such a pity. The official collector’s DVD has so many features, interviews, behind the scenes footage that fans would really love to watch.

Going back to the topic at hand, sex in GOT is almost never prurient or used simply for entertainment value although it does help to attract more viewers too. Sex or even nudity almost always has a purpose or meaning other than just satisfying one’s desire. Rape, for example, is just as effective as a weapon in destroying your enemies or showing dominance over a conquered people. This has been the case throughout history in countless wars and invasions.

Royal Weddings

Marriage especially for the highborn (nobility) was never about romance, attraction or love. They were arranged to keep the peace for the greater good of all. Often marriage is even between warring or rival clans. It was a means to keep your enemies closer and to use resources they would not otherwise be willing to sacrifice. This is the case for nearly all royal weddings: Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) to Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) to Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) and so on.

The whole root of conflict from season 1 and arguably even onwards is connected to the incestuous love affair of twins’ Cersei and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). In one steamy scene Jaime rapes Cersei during a funeral. It was borne out of grief, anger, frustration and lust on Jaime’s part. That’s one of the reasons why fans relate to the series, you understand how and why he reacts that way. Sex comes from a lot of different situations and emotions not just love or purely lust.

They’re the original sex symbols for GOT since the first season. Their sexual relations bore 3 children: Joffrey, Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Myrcella (Aimee Richardson). No one is more cruel and sadistic as Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) the bastard son of Roos Bolton. He captures Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) then tortures and castrates him. What’s even worse is the mental torture that he unleashes upon him, its so dehumanizing that Theon forgets his identity and takes on a new personality Ramsay gives him as Reek. The method is similar to PULP FICTION where the sexually dominated, enslaved character is called ‘the gimp’.

Collectible Bluray/DVD

Fans have always lusted after the incestuous super MILF Cersei Lannister since season 1. For season 5 Lena Heady as Queen regent Cersei is punished for her ‘unnatural’ incestuous relations. And is made to walk naked across the city. Sorry to disappoint them but Cersei’s nudity scene had body double-Rebecca Van Cleave. The VFX was able to do it very realistically that no one would ever know it was not Lena Heady’s naked body.

Queen Regent Cersei (Lena Heady) is certainly the most captivating face in the kingdom. She’s also one of the most viciously cruel characters in GOT.

It was more demeaning than arousing, nevertheless countless fans may still need to see it again and again. In order to fully ‘appreciate’ this scene having the official DVD with extra footage would be even more indispensible. The airing of HBO episodes here in the Philippines has the more revealing scenes cut out. The extra features possibly with more nude scenes are definitely worth the price.
