Tsujimura (Mirai Moriyama) a samurai on horseback sees a beggar in the middle of a rice field. What drew his attention are the bright colors of a kimono, among the meager possessions of the beggar. He screams, “Where did you get that?” The beggar excitedly pulls out the kimono and hurriedly shows it to the samurai. The beggar hopes to sell the clothing. As he comes near Tsujimura recognizes the kimono. Barely a few steps away from him, the head of the beggar comes flying off his body. Tsujimura’s sword cut his head off so fast; we see the effect of blood spraying across the field of grass.

There are no apologies or restraints in the fight scenes of SAMURAI MARATHON, easily the best action movie of the year. SAMURAI MARATHON is part of the Eiga Sai 2019 Film Festival running from July 3 to August 25, 2019 starting at the RED CARPET cinemas in Shang Rila Plaza Mall and continuing on to other cities across the country.

There are 17 full feature films of diverse genres ranging from action to drama and even the popular Animé (Japanese Animation). On its 22nd edition this year Eiga Sai is a celebration of Philippine-Japan Friendship month with a lot of different activities.

Shang Rila Plaza Mall guests for example can explore the Katana and Armor exhibit by Geisha’s Blade Philippines Samurai Sword Shop on July 5-7 and July 22-14 in the East Atrium. The Shang patrons will also be treated to a live performance of shamisen player Keisho Ohno known for his fusion of Japanese traditional music and rock on July 6 at the Grand Atrium.

Ruthless Action

SAMURAI MARATHON is based on Akihiro Dobashi’s novel BAKUMATSU MARATHON SAMURAI about the Ansei Tooashi, which (in real life) is Japan’s first marathon established in 1855. Because of the immense popularity of Game of Thrones, there’s a resurgence of fascination in sword fighting, knighthood, the medieval era.  With this title you will have your fill of steel and blood. The reputation of the Japanese katana as the sharpest most efficient sword in the world is well earned. The pace of action is definitely several times faster and quicker than GOT fans are used to.

This is a part of history when the Shogun is fearful of uprisings from various Lords. Just like the Emperors in China or Korea who united their warring kingdoms, they are at a constant state of paranoia.  This is the main reason for the extreme amount of violence. When news spreads that foreigners (the Americans) land in Edo to meet with the Shogun, it triggers panic among the samurai. Lord Katsuakira Itakura (Hiroki Hasegawa) organizes a 36-mile marathon to find out who among his samurai is the fastest runner and to whip up his men into shape.

Bernard Rose

A lot was made of a Japanese production hiring an American director in Bernard Rose. Especially since it was a very traditional and historic theme. The result was surprisingly honest without holding any punches in a lot of aspects. Historically, Rose didn’t shy away from the negative effects of American influence especially in ending the samurai era. The introduction of firearms (revolver) even Kentucky Bourbon, among other things changed their way of life. There’s a lot more emphasis on gore that would have otherwise been gleaned from a Japanese director.

There are shades of Quentin Tarantino in terms of brutality. Bruce Willis used a katana in PULP FICTION, Uma Thurman as well in KILL BILL 1&2. His influence over a generation of filmmakers is strong. Tarantino will incidentally be releasing ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD with Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt. They are promoting it as his 9th because the director has famously said he only wanted to make 10 movies. Quentin is also a fan of Philippine cinema.

Princess Yuki

Female characters here are more headstrong than other Japanese films set in this era. I’m not sure how much of it was already in Dobashi’s novel versus the interpretation of Rose who also has credit as screenwriter. Princess Yuki played extremely well by Nana Komatsu, is the prime example. She has a love for illustration and art which she dreams of making a profession. Her father Lord Katsuakira has arranged her marriage to Tsujimura. Princess Yuki does everything in her power to thwart his plan. She’s not the only strong female character, as women become archers in defense of their town.

Ninja

Apart from samurais one of the figures in Japanese lore that has captured the world’s imagination is that of the Ninja. Here it takes on a deeper meaning or translation. Often we think of them as assassins.  But in this story its closer to the modern definition of a ‘sleeper cell’ or a spy. Similar to the samurai class, it is passed on from generation to generation. Skills in assassination, hand fighting, various weaponry is taught from father to son. Watch out for a remarkable display in the use of the Ninja star. The difference is no one knows they’re ninja, everything is done in secret.

Jinnai Karasawa played by Takeru Satoh, for example is an accountant by profession. He belongs to a ninja clan loyal to the Shogun. Their family lives in the Annaka territory in order to spy for the Shogun and report any hint of a rebellion from the ruling Lords. Not even his wife and daughter are aware of this.

The 22nd Eiga Sai film fest has a wide range of movies including Anime title: LU OVER THE WALL in RED CARPET Cinemas, Shang Rila Plaza Mall from July 3-14, 2019.

RUROUNI KENSHIN Background

Lead actor Takeru Satoh gained fame from hit action film RUROUNI KENSHIN, which is so successful in Japan it is already in its third installment (RUROUNI KENSHIN3). The role is that of a samurai from a similar period and is based on a hit manga and animated series. Satoh is not the only person from that hit franchise. Bernard Rose also tapped the services of cinematographer Takuro Ishizaka. The slick fight scenes from RUROUNI were upped another level combined with Rose’ emphasis on carnage.

Ishizaka was also able to capture the imposing castles of Lords from the era. The well-preserved castles had an air of grandeur at the same time seemed impregnable.

SAMURAI MARATHON is only one of 17 must see movies in the Eiga Sai line up. There’s Palme d’Or winner from 2018 Cannes SHOPLIFTERS. And one film that hits close to home is THE TEARS OF MALUMPATI, which is based on the true story of the Pandan Water Pipeline Project in Panay Island. A young Japanese woman and a 5-year-old girl break cultural barriers to start a friendship over origami and a picture book.

RED CARPET Cinema

RED CARPET is the newly designed movie theaters of Shang Rila Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong. It features plush leather seating that you can push back and recline. Almost like the new Premium Economy seating in Philippine Airlines. The walls and shape of the theater also enhance the sound experience.

Just in case you arrive early and need a place to hang out, there’s a seating area outside the theater designed like a mini amphitheater. There’s a large LED screen where you can view trailers of up and coming titles. You don’t have to pay a single cent to enjoy this new area.

Also there’s a newly renovated snack bar that serves not just popcorn but hot dogs and other food items. If you’re on a tight budget you can buy pizza bread, ham tomato and cheese sandwich from Bread Talk (one level below) which has items that range from as low as P30 to P80 and bring them up to this new snack area. Or if you don’t want to go that far, get a Jamaican Beef Pattie right there (P55) eat them in this new fancy space and feel like a million bucks.

RED CARPET makes going to movies truly a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The problem is once you do experience it you may not want to watch movies anywhere else.
