BP Alice and Friends: THIS IS WHO WE ARE

It was the first time I had ever seen a Ballet Philippines production so bare. There was no orchestra. And I could literally see into the TNA (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo) stage without a set or background. TNA is the biggest and main CCP Theater, easily the most prestigious stage in the country.

It was the first time ANY production laid it that bare. From the audience we could see the bare wall of the backstage, stage left and right were stripped of everything including production people. The only thing left were the lights, the  ‘costumes’ were black, shorts, for the men and simple tops and bottoms for the women…all from the dancers themselves.

There was nothing that would catch the eye except for the dancers’ bodies, the choreography, the dynamism of movement, precision of leaps in unison. In essence that’s what they’ve always been doing, telling stories with their bodies, hands, feet, legs and of course facial expressions. The most difficult movements lasting mere milliseconds in the air, executed with military precision and artistic fervor.

AFTERWHOM

This culminating piece entitled AFTERWHOM was choreographed by Augustus ‘Bam’ Damian III in 2005. Music was composed by Jerrold Tarrog who is now one of the most successful film makers today. Tarrog directed GENERAL LUNA (2015) and GOYO: THE BOY GENERAL (2018).

One understands why BP ALICE & FRIENDS ended with this spectacular piece. AFTERWHOM is only one of 8 different choreographic ‘pieces’ a mixture of modern, contemporary, neo classical, traditional Filipino that was presented that glorious night. The culminating piece was very indicative of the special event, as if saying this is who we are as a company. This is who we are as a people. The set was baring itself, letting the dancers ‘speak’ for themselves in a way they only know how.

Two National Artists: Benedicto Cabrera (Visual Arts) and Alice Reyes (Dance). ALICE & FRIENDS, A Tapestry of Dances in Celebration of 50 years at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, February 21, 2020, CCP Main Theater. Photo by Jude Bautista

Virgie & BenCab

All of them were choreographed by Filipinos except for Adam Sage’s piece GLINKA’S VALSE. 3 of the pieces were by Alice Reyes herself, National Artist for Dance. Perhaps the most highly anticipated: ITIM ASU based on the play THE ONYX WOLF by internationally renowned literary figure, poet, playwright, Virginia R. Moreno. Virgie, as she is affectionately known, is one of many prominent figures who lent their support in the massive crowd that turned up.

National Artist BenCab was hand in hand with Alice Reyes during curtain call. His was one of hundreds from the cultural community who showed their love, support and devotion to the beleaguered Artistic Director. Reyes’ term officially ends March 31, 2020.

ALICE & FRIENDS A TAPESTRY OF DANCES IN CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS OF DANCE was held to a full CCP Main Theater last February 21, 2020. The whole cultural community from theater, the literary, art, fashion world, fans in general were all there to show their love for Alice Reyes.

Sage & Yadao

The event was organized by dancers, BP alumni and many friends after the announcement of the cancellation of ITIM ASU due to fears of the spreading corona virus. For most people however there was also the underlying context of the newly assigned Artistic Director for Ballet Philippines, Mikhail Martynyuk. The selection was seen by most as a way to exclude current Artistic Director Alice Reyes from the process. BP President Kathleen Lichtenstein, Vice Chair Marianne Hontiveros reportedly had a rift with Reyes.

The past several years Alice Reyes has worked with Adam Sage as her Assistant Artistic Director. Sage and Ronelson Yadao has been mentioned as Reyes’ nominees as Co-Artistic Director. Both have decades long experience as dancers and instructors specifically with Ballet Philippines.

Exclusion

Former CCP President, Cinemalaya Trustee Nestor Jardin said, “I’m very sad and disheartened about it because I don’t think the board of trustees of Ballet Philippines did the selection process in a consultative manner. I felt the dancers should have been consulted.  I felt that the outgoing Artistic Director should have been consulted also.”

CCP VP and Artistic Director Chris Millado said, “The selection process especially for a major company like BP should be a very careful and thorough process which is more inclusive in terms of consulting with  the artists, the stakeholders especially. I think a lot of the confusion and heartbreak that has been happening was because a community of artists of BP feel that they have been left out of the process.”

BP Identity

A lot of observers feel that the issue is bigger than just exclusion but more of the identity of Ballet Philippines itself.  Jardin goes on, “As to the choice of the Russian what we are stressing here is the integrity of the vision and artistic heritage of Ballet Philippines. For the past 50 years Ballet Philippines has stood for the development and promotion of a uniquely Filipino and contemporary dance expression that speaks of us as a people, as a community and as a nation. I don’t think that would be followed through with a Russian Artistic Director who doesn’t know the company, who doesn’t know the country, who doesn’t know the Filipino artistic sensibility.”

Russian Embassy’s Denial

There was an added fuel to the fire of controversy when BP President Kathleen Lichtenstein, VP Maan Hontiveros sought to justify the selection of Martynyuk with their statements in a PDI article entitled: What went wrong in Ballet Philippines?, written by Marge Enriquez and published February 16, 2020.

To quote the said article: “Rumors began to circulate that Lisa Macuja Elizalde, CEO and artistic director of Ballet Manila (BM), had recommended Russian Mikhail Martynyuk, principal dancer of the Kremlin Ballet (and her partner in her last full length ballets before retirement). Speaking to Lifestyle, Macuja Elizalde clarified, “It was Ballet Philippines’ search committee for artistic director that asked the Russian Embassy for recommendations. The embassy contacted Marynsky Ballet in St. Petersburg.” She said one of the dancers recommended Martynyuk, citing his fondness for the Philippines and willingness to move his family to Manila. “It was Marynksy Ballet that gave his name to the embassy.”

The article caused such a backlash online that questions and comments from netizens regarding the issue started flooding the official Russian Embassy facebook page. An exasperated Press Secretary of the Embassy, Natalia Linovitskaya, had to issue an official statement (also on fb) dated February 20, 2020.

To quote the official Russian Embassy statement: “As Press Secretary of the Embassy I officially declare that the Russian diplomatic mission in Manila has never meddled into that matter. The Embassy conducts its daily business in accordance to what is required and follow strict adherence to the principles of Diplomacy. The Embassy cannot be obliged to give any kind of recommendations, engage in politics, nor interfere in any internal affairs of Philippine public institutions like Ballet Philippines. We do not stoop down to malicious innuendos or believe unfounded statements. If Ballet Philippines needs some kind of support (e.g. request for interpreter or to give our opinion about background of Mariinsky Theatre), they should send us official request, and we will respond accordingly. We are not aware about the disputes within the BP management and it is not our business.”

Impeccable Track Record

Some have criticized the writer of the article Marge Enriquez even PDI for the obvious inaccuracy, corrected by the Russian Embassy. In my humble opinion, it speaks less of Enriquez but more for the people that she quoted for the article, whose statements were very clearly delineated in quotation marks.

I honestly don’t know her personally, but I am very much aware of Enriquez’ long and impeccable track record as writer. She writes about numerous subject matter from food, travel, fashion, art, lifestyle, even health for decades. I’ve never heard anyone question her integrity in all that time, until now.

So one can also consider another possibility. That there may have been a deliberate attempt to mislead Marge Enriquez and (by extension) her readers in order to justify the selection of Mikhail Martynyuk as Artistic Director for Ballet Philippines.

Divided BP Board

Ballet Philippines Trustee and Treasurer Richard Upton, in an interview, said that there were several issues he needed to clarify. “The primary remedy is for the board of trustees to convene, discuss what’s going on. And retract their ok. Because the board as an official body has never voted on this. Because we never had an official meeting in November and February no minutes were ever prepared. And Alice who is a trustee and the Artistic Director, myself, I’m treasurer and Trustee, another Trustee and our corporate secretary Doreen Yu were never called by the meetings. We were frozen out.”

Irene Marcos-Araneta and BP Trustee & Treasurer Richard Upton. ALICE & FRIENDS, A Tapestry of Dances in Celebration of 50 years at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, February 21, 2020, CCP Main Theater. Photo by Jude Bautista (17)

Upton also wanted to directly respond to some of the claims, “They even claimed that I supported the actions of the search committee, no! What I said in the meeting which has never been minuted ‘was OK  we can consider foreigners why not? But it has to be somebody who can be guided and thoroughly understands Philippine culture. Even though we dance in a classical medium we are also in a unique medium which blends classical and modern. That’s recognized around the world as a unique fusion, it’s very Filipino. So we have to be very cautious about that. They said ‘Oh Upton said we can have a foreign Artistic Director’ that’s not true. I’ve been part of this company for 49 years!”

For Upton the turn out for ALICE & FRIENDS was an indication of who the public believes,  “Tonight the audience said it doesn’t stick. The Russian Embassy said we didn’t recommend anyone to be artistic director. They issued a statement that’s not what we do. We don’t get involved in things like that. We wish Philippine culture well but we’re not going to tell you who to put in. An official statement was issued. You have to remember the tension and pressure on Alice has been overwhelming. She’s pulled together this performance and we’re deeply, deeply, deeply touched by the turn out. ”

NOT Social Media

As of writing there is still no change or compromise among the BP Board of Trustees regarding the Artistic Director selection. But there is a way to resolve this according to CCP VP Chris Millado, “The remedy is people have to talk like adults. Rather than, you know, social media is full of angry talk. But nothing can be resolved that way. It’s one big family naman e. If people have the same shared vision of Ballet Philippines and its legacy, I think a solution could be collaborated on.”
