After having a stroke Branko Zavrsan (Francesco) was paralyzed in his right arm and was unable to speak. Valentina Carnelutti (Angela) had to lift him into the bath tub. Just as she was doing so he kisses and licks her neck. Something he had done before. But now, inside the tub, he was escalating it rubbing her crotch.

Asbestos Poisoning

The underlying theme of THE MAN WITHOUT GUILT is asbestos poisoning, that unfortunately occurs across several industries and locations in Italy. In this movie, however, the added complication is the setting of Trieste in Northern Italy where they share a border with Slovenia. Cross migrations in the border are rampant. Themes of elderly abuse, sexual harassment, racism, prejudice, whether economic or racial are tackled in the story.

Relatable Caregiver

Angela is a character that a lot Filipinos can relate to. She is a caregiver by profession like many of our kababayans abroad. Even if you’re not a caregiver yourself, Filipinos can relate to caring for their loved ones, especially an elderly parent or relative.

Complications arise when she encounters Francesco Gorian, the most despised man in town. He is the owner of the business which is responsible for the deaths of townsfolk due to asbestos poisoning. Although, it wasn’t established whether it was a construction company or a mining operation. What is definite is that Francesco knew of the dangers and continued on in spite of them.

From Anger to Love?

Angela’s husband is one of the many employees who were killed. Along with her best friends Elena and Marco who are now suffering long term effects of asbestos poisoning as well. While working in the hospital Angela sees Francesco recovering from a stroke. Where portions of his body is paralyzed and is unable to speak.

Since Angela is exceptional at her job, she impresses Francesco’s son Enrico. Who then offers a higher paycheck and hires her as their personal caregiver. Angela first considers it as an opportunity for revenge, but her feelings take an unexpected turn.

Valentina Carnelutti’s Authenticity

It takes a talented actress to play a complex (and realistic) character like Angela. Valentina Carnelutti has acting talent and more, being a writer, director and singer. Carnelutti has had a versatile career. What she is able to bring to each role is a strong sense of authenticity.

An extremely difficult task where Angela’s experiences a roller coaster of emotions. Not all of them easily understood. In the beginning, she was motivated by revenge. But later on develops romantic feelings for Francesco.

Romantic Ambiguity

Almost like a Munchausen Syndrome where the care giver falls for the helplessness/dependence of the patient. Portraying that transformation of feelings is extremely challenging. That’s what Angela was able to achieve. It’s a role similar to Alma played by Vicky Krieps in PHANTOM THREAD. The difference here is Angela didn’t cause the stroke or disease of Francesco.

Writer director Ivan Gergolet deliberately chose to make the romantic side ambiguous. Much like real life, not everything is out in the open or explicitly shown. Especially since Francesco was unable to speak.

Things are getting red-hot, because PUMA’s Speedcat is back at the Shang! The iconic sneakers are already flying off the shelves.

Despicable Branko Zavrsan

Slovenian actor Branko Zavrsan, was able to conquer a difficult role. He was the most despised man in Trieste while being physically crippled by a stroke. His performance was so convincing, it was so shocking seeing him up and about in a dream sequence.

For me one of the most unforgivable traits of Francesco is his prejudice against the Slavs. While being Slavic himself and merely adopted Italy as his home. Branko exhibited that disgust with the Sciava, (Italian term for Slav) with convincing fervor.

The Slovenians have a beautiful culture, that should be shown more in cinema. For example, they have a tradition of choirs singing in funerals with traditional lyrics and songs. Which is very moving.

Haunting Giusi Merli

One of the names that would not necessarily leap out of the cast list is Giusi Merli. She is nevertheless, an amazing character actor. She plays an old woman who is lost and suffers from dementia. In spite of this she gives nuggets of wisdom to Angela.

Merli makes her moments on screen extremely memorable. Even if they may be limited to a few minutes or just a few lines. She has a very unique look. She’s the older reverend mother in the brink of death in DUNE2. And a Mother Theresa-like character in THE GREAT BEAUTY which has become an Italian classic.
