Callan Mulvey (Anatoli Knyazev) entered the Lexcorp truck containing the largest chunk of Kryptonite on earth. 2 large SUVs with armed men follow behind them. Out of nowhere the Batmobile chases them down. Men with machine guns shoot from the SUVs. It didn’t take long for the Ben Affleck (the Bat) to dispose of them. The truck makes a sharp turn the Batmobile has no choice and crashes into a brick wall. Instead of stopping, the wall crumbles into a million pieces: the souped up Bat mobile goes through the bricks not missing a beat. In one more turn it will catch up. Suddenly the bat mobile crashes into something in the mist that completely stops it then bounces a few feet off. The smoke clears, its Superman.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: THE DAWN OF JUSTICE is easily one of the biggest movies of the year just like STAR WARS FORCE AWAKENS was for 2015. The battle seems like a no brainer; how can anyone have an exciting fight with Superman (Henry Cavill)? He’s as invincible as characters come, the difference here is that Batman has the brains to beat him. Watching what gadget he’s going to use in what way that uses Kryptonite to defeat Superman is what makes moviegoers excited. There will definitely be an advanced and heavy Bat armor to help fight Superman.

Watching this epic battle on cinemas is an absolute must. The visuals will literally blow audiences away along with intelligent surround sound. Director Zack Snyder has brought the hyper realistic, slomo, stylized action sequences of 300 to the Superman franchise. He amplifies it up even more in Dawn of Justice.

The Bat Jet also has drone capabilities. Batman relinquishes control of the craft to Alfred (Jeremy Irons) who is tucked away in the Wayne Manor. Alfred has screens, joystick and weapons all controlled remotely. In some ways, Batman’s action sequences are even more riveting for the simple reason he’s not so invincible. He relies on his martial arts skills, heat sensors of the vehicles, bat suit and so on to defeat the bad guys.

Wonder Woman & Great Expectations

The action however isn’t confined to these two characters’ or their epic battle scene. There is also the introduction of Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot. The most memorable Wonder Woman of my youth was Lynda Carter who played the role in the 70s but was aired here in Philippine TV during the 80s. Carter’s blue eyes, perfect cheekbones, voluptuous figure became the ‘iconic’ image of Wonder Woman. So much so that she was included in FIFTY WHO MADE DC GREAT, a special commemorative issue. This is what filmmaker Zack Snyder, cast Gadot, Henry Cavill even Ben Affleck are competing with.

There are these iconic films, faces and actors that the current cast has to be compared against. Christopher Reeve, who has already passed away, is still considered by a lot of fans, as the immortal face of Kal El. Ben Affleck will inevitably be compared to Michael Keaton and even more recent Christian Bale as Batman. Heath Ledger won an Oscar posthumously as the Joker in 2009. But before that it was Jack Nicholson who made his stamp on the role in 1989.

It’s very easy to lambast BATMAN VS SUPERMAN because the expectations and standards have been raised enormously high. The film HAS TO gain critical acclaim and rake in a billion dollars to be considered a ‘success’. Perhaps fortunately for MARVEL, all they have to do is earn money and their job is done.

Gal Gadot

The casting of Gal Gadot however, lives up to those high expectations and in some respects even exceeds it. Lynda Carter was Miss World America; Gadot was Miss Israel and competed in the Miss Universe Pageant in 2004. She certainly has the looks as an endorser of GUCCI and JAGUAR. While she may not be as voluptuous as Carter, she more than makes up for it as a ‘stronger’, combat ready and current version of Wonder Woman.

At age 18, immediately after her Miss Universe stint she was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces for 2 years and even became a combat instructor. She got her big film break in FAST & THE FURIOUS and was able to give her role Giselle Yashar an independent and strong image. She was also in FAST FIVE and FAST & FURIOUS 6. For Dawn of Justice, Gadot trained in kung fu, jiu jitsu and kickboxing.

Gadot really needed the training especially for another super villain in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. The emphasis of Wonder Woman’s shield (and sword) makes her especially convincing in these epic battles. It also makes her more aesthetically pleasing and realistic, as the action sequences are particularly intense. Without revealing too much, the epic battle between Batman & Superman is actually just one of many between superheroes that fans can watch out for. In terms of slam-bang fight scenes this film is a home run.

Japanese supermodel Tao Okamoto is another anticipated casting choice. Her role as Mercy Graves is Lex Luthor’s assistant but appeared originally in the Superman Animated series in 1996. She did not have as much screen time as her lead role Mariko in THE WOLVERINE. The Moviebit reported that Mercy Graves role is “the second DC Comics character created specifically for Warner Bros. animated shows to make the jump to the big screen, alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.”

Justice League

Around the same time we were watching Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, we were also mesmerized by another show as kids in the early 80s. The Saturday Fun Machine in RPN9 had several animated series but the highlight was SUPERFRIENDS. This is significant because it was one of the popular cartoons that featured the quartet of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. As the series progressed they added more heroes and villains.

JUSTICE LEAGUE, which had similar group of heroes, predated the animated series as a comic book. But SUPERFRIENDS was the cartoon on TV, which popularized them as a team to a lot of fans and viewers around the world. I think that’s why DAWN OF JUSTICE resonates with me personally or with some fans from my generation.

Finally we can see Batman, Superman… and Wonder Woman come to life in this modern explosive blockbuster. We also see the introduction of Aqua Man played by Jason Momoa, which I think is another kick ass casting choice also recently played CONAN THE BARBARIAN and Khal Drogo in GAME OF THRONES. There’s the intro on THE FLASH (Ezra Miller) and CYBORG (Ray Fisher). The long wait is finally over and soon the full-length film WONDER WOMAN will be released in 2017 along with JUSTICE LEAGUE. AQUAMAN has also been announced for 2018.
