Ten assassins immediately kill one of the Fremen at the end of the corridor. Duncan draws his sword runs toward them, slashing two, beheading another running along the wall. He slides, spins and slashes in whirlwind of carnage. As the bodies fell, ten of them lay dead in front of Duncan. A dozen more assassins appear.

Cinema OR Nothing
DUNE has to be viewed in cinemas, or nothing at all. Thank God, it was the first film shown post COVID lockdowns. Decades before STAR WARS, Frank Herbert wrote the bestselling novel DUNE. Herbert was part of the big three of science fiction novelists along with Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.

You could imagine the splash it made in 1984 when the original DUNE movie was released. As an adolescent then, I have to confess, I was more excited with the prospect of seeing Sting make his acting debut as one of the villains. Not unlike, teens today idolizing Timothee Chalamet in the lead role of Paul Atreides for this version.

Sting at the time, was still very much the vocalist of THE POLICE and had wild brushed up, punk hair. Which was perfect for Feyd Rautha, a role that was not present for this film.

Ethnically Diverse
Casting wise, this newer version is more ethnically diverse and is definitely richer for it. These are not token roles but important ones. Zendaya as Chani, opposite Chalamet, has African American and Scottish, German ancestry. Zendaya was the youngest Best Actress (Drama) recipient in the Emmy’s for HBO’s EUPHORIA (2019).

Seems only logical having a more diverse cast, makes you wonder why they didn’t do it back then. The casting is a political statement by itself. The Fremen were mostly assigned with black and brown skinned actors:

Human History
The Fremen are the original inhabitants of Arakkis a desert planet rich in the resource spice. The House of Atreides is part of an empire that harvests “ spice – a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. It is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides.” From Wikipedia – Dune novel.

The story line sounds familiar because it is. May have been based on the past millennia of human history. The British, Spaniards, French, Germans have been colonizing Africa, Middle East, South America and Asia for 400 years or so. Not unlike the U.S., the past century. Colonizers exploited these places for oil, gold, silver even spice itself, pepper, mustard, were valuable commodities. Apart from the actual slave trade.

There’s a ring of historical truth in this science fiction saga. Which is made even more visually apparent in their casting choices. Paul Atreides in his journey discovers how the empire has oppressed the Fremen. And learns from them how to be a warrior and eventually a leader. This is from a novel first published, 1965 by Frank Herbert. And in 2003, was described as the world’s best-selling science fiction novel.

Denis Villeneuve
For filmmaker Denis Villeneuve DUNE was a dream project that started from his youth having been a fan of the novel at age 14. That’s why he may have been comfortable enough to also be screenwriter as well as director. His genuine adulation for Herbert made him even more faithful to the book.

Villeneuve based almost everything from the appearance of objects, production design, even pulling exact lines. In an interview with VANITY FAIR he said, “ The book was basis for or inspiration in shooting and editing. Even to the composition of music both he and Hans Zimmer were always going back to the book, it was like the bible. It was a way to keep contact with Frank Herbert. I have a deep, deep respect and admiration for him.” Herbert passed away in 1986, age 65 from pancreatic cancer.

The Canadian director has a unique insight on the novel, “Science fiction here is the evolution of the human brain. I think this is what DUNE is all about. I made the movie for one audience, that is me. I read this book 40 years ago and fell in love with it. I was aware there are millions of hard core fans of the book. I took on the challenge of pleasing what I was most afraid of and that is me.”

DUNE’s Filipino Connection
An added burden for Villeneuve, apart from the creative demands of screenwriting and directing is having to assemble his production team. Expectations were high fresh from his critical success in BLADE RUNNER 2049. It won an Oscar for Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Achievement in Visual Effects (John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert, Richard R. Hoover).

Denis also assigned Roger Yuan as Fight Coordinator for the many action scenes. Yuan has a long list of Fight choreography work including JOHN WICK 3, JASON BOURNE, SKYFALL. Roger, also an actor, was given the role of Lieutenant Lanville.

For DUNE, he gave each group a different fighting style. The Atreides for example make use of a Filipino fighting style of Kali and Escrima. The Sardaukar is based on Vikings and Samurai.

Dave Bautista
For the longest time he was known as Batista in his storied wrestling career with WWE. As an actor he changed it back to his real name. Bautista is the original Filipino spelling, which he got from his paternal grandfather. An immigrant who was with Philippine military and later worked as cab driver in Washington, DC. His dad David Michael Bautista, born in the U.S. was a hairdresser.

Movie fans know Dave as Drax the Destroyer from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. For DUNE he brings the same ferocity as Beast Rabban Harkonnen.

Dave is very proud of his Filipino heritage. In an interview with the Inquirer he said, “It’s something that isn’t expected of a guy with my frame and stature. Some people would look at my physicality and would never see me as an emotional person—which I am, absolutely. I’m very loving and emotional. I’m so Filipino. I want to continue expressing that side of me because I don’t want to be a stereotypical action hero. I want to be somebody who has a heart because I want people to be able to relate to me and empathize with me. Sometimes, it’s hard to do that when you’re a large, muscular person. But I’m learning.”

Bautista was able to show a little bit of his sensitive side in the role of Sapper Morton in BLADE RUNNER 2049. The role was a Nexus-8 replicant and combat medic who hid in the outskirts of greater Los Angeles as a protein farmer. Villeneuve was impressed enough to cast him again in DUNE for ‘The Beast’.
