ADMU Lady Eagle’s Hannah Dato was dominant in all of the events she competed in the 78th UAAP Swimming meet last October 22-25, 2015. The crowds in the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool were a mix with fans from University of the East Warriors, UST Growling Tigers & N.U. Bull Dogs. But surprisingly the Ateneo Blue Eagles and U.P. Maroon supporters outnumbered the DLSU Archers in their own backyard.

They were witness to Dato’s performance, which was usually several body lengths ahead of the nearest competition. In a sport where milliseconds sometimes separate the top three, she was again proving that she’s in a league of her own. The Lady Eagles successfully defended their UAAP championship in the ladies division.

There were also instances where she would establish the UAAP event record in the preliminary round only to break it in the finals round: 50m Butterfly Prelims-27.75 and finals-27.66. Or break her own record from a previous year/s 400m Individual Medley: 5:03.71.

She was also warm and gracious towards her competitors often shaking their hand if not hugging them after. The MVP award for the women’s division was awarded with a total of 7 gold medals. A quote from Hannah’s fb page explains her wining attitude: “As a student athlete my primary goal in this 78th UAAP Season are as follows: to unfurl the Ateneo emblem as before with flying colors, to exhibit sportsmanship and humility, and as an ambassador of goodwill, to promote friendship in the spirit of fair play.”

The Blue Eagles have won back-to-back UAAP Swimming championships. Men’s MVP also came from the Blue Eagles. Jessie King Lacuna earned a total of 7 golds. His performance was tighter against other competitors. There was a dramatic finish in the Men’s 200m freestyle between Jessie and his brother Dexter John Lacuna who is a U.P Maroon. Just like the famous Teng brothers in basketball finals, Jeron for DLSU and Jeric for the UST Growling Tigers, when the Archers captured the Basketball championship in 2013 (UAAP 76).

While Jessie was elated with his 200m victory over his brother they soon had a congratulatory embrace. The two swam side by side with their lanes beside each other.

Ateneo also dominated the Boy’s Division. But the University of the East captured its first Junior Boy’s gold through Jerard Jacinto’s time of 1:02.39 in the 100m backstroke.
