Awards are great, but they are not infallible. Last year, I was really impressed with “Engkwentro” by Pepe Diokno and I was telling anyone who’d listen how good it is. It did not win a single award during the Cinemalaya Awards night. A couple of months later it won two awards at the Venice Film fest.

The year before that I adored “Boses” by Ellen Ongkeko Marfil, it also didn’t win a single Cinemalaya award. And yet it won in the Honolulu film fest. Interviewing almost all the film makers for this year, most of them are just glad to make their film the way they want to and to beat the deadline.

New Breed directors: Dennis Marasigan (Vox Populi), Ian Dean Loreños (The Leaving), Art Katipunan (Si Tetchie Teknoboy at Juana B), Francis Xavier Pasion (Smapaguita), Danny Añonuevo (Rekrut), Dan Villegas & Paul Sta. Ana (Mayohan), Kim Homer Garcia (Magkakapatid), Gutierrez Mangansakan II (Limbunan) and Sheron Dayoc (Halaw).

Being able to accomplish the film is a true achievement and is definitely not a cliché. One thing I noticed this year too the New Breed film makers held each other’s hands waiting for the Best Film announcement.  It was similar to Ms. Universe, this group is tight.

Please catch the films in U.P. Film institute, whether it won an award or not. You never know you may just find a gem the jurors did not.
