It was bad enough Joanna Ampil’s stellar rendition of Broadway hits were marred by audio problems: pops and mic drop offs. There was a weariness growing in the crowd, patience wearing incredibly thin. Celeste Legaspi went on stage and started her spiel, “For the last five decades..” Then there was a loud pop heard through the speakers. Yet she soldiered on, “… For the last half century… but we also ponder what the future will be while celebrating …” Her voice suddenly trailed away until it wasn’t heard. A heckler screamed “Fix the mic! Fix the mic!”

After a few agonizing seconds Celeste’s voice came on again, “Thank you. You see this is why we have to raise funds.” The crowd couldn’t help but laugh and suddenly applaud at the consummate professional in Celeste and how she salvaged the moment at the same time bring across the very painful reason for the night.
“A billion, Margie said! So where was I? As we ponder what and how the future can be while we celebrate 50 years of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. We look forward to one hundred and fifty years and beyond assured that new Filipino artists will always arise to share their voice to the Philippines and to the world!” There was an added poignancy and meaning to her words. The audience couldn’t help but applaud again.

Co-host Shamaine Buencamino responded,” Nonie and I first worked together playing husband and wife in a play here at CCP. And after we got married and had children CCP became our extended home. Our eldest child also studied at the Philippine High school for the Arts has had her share of performances and productions in this building. Now that she has given us our first grandchild we know that the CCP will continue to provide a nurturing venue and a community.” Nonie Buencamino added, “We look forward to the future and the future is right there.”

Dazzling Night
Audio disasters aside BULAWAN CCP 50th Anniversary Concert, at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Main Theater, Sept. 20-21, 2019 was a spectacular show.

Two symphonic orchestras combined, playing in unison: Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the UST Symphony Orchestra. Front stage, left and right side, a phalanx of choirs led by MADZ (Philippine Madrigal Singers) a group as diverse as the Sing Philippines Youth Choir to the Pansol Choir. They didn’t just sing but in essence provided a live sound effects performance. Sometimes they became villagers gossiping in the background and varied their effects to even beat boxing.

Katsch Catoy
As dazzled as the audience was, we couldn’t get away from the nagging problems of the aging theater. Walking out, the first man I saw in the hall was Katsch Catoy. He’s a multi awarded and much respected Lighting Designer. He told me he worked on the opening sequence: Genesis Light And Sound Presentation. It made use of the large screen in the theater featuring the work of abstract, modernist H.R. Ocampo National Artist for Visual Arts. Katsch talked about how the lights were opaque and discolored, it wasn’t what he really envisioned. “The artist is only as good as his materials.”

How Much Is the Soul of a Nation Worth?
If it weren’t for the generous sponsorship of companies like BDO, Philippine Airlines, Rustans, the 50th Anniversary Gala celebration would not have even been possible. Pinoy artists that they are they were able to produce in spite of the challenges and problems of their materials. You may ask, but why is the CCP in such a dire situation?
Doesn’t the most prestigious artistic and cultural center that represents our country deserve better? Isn’t the place that is supposed to be the center of our national identity deserving of the best materials and facilities the government, the nation can provide? In reality the CCP budget from the government has always been the last priority and has suffered set backs and cuts from nearly every administration.

The short answer to the question, ‘How Much Is the Soul of a Nation Worth?’ is that it is priceless. You can’t and you shouldn’t put a monetary value on it. We can only attempt to collate, preserve, protect and enrich it by creating this one place a literal home for Filipino art, music, dance and culture. The upkeep of the CCP,that we can put a price tag on. According to CCP Chair Margie Moran it will take more than P1 Billion, to be raised the next 5 years.
If you’re asking me why I believe the CCP is where the soul of the nation resides, allow me to explain. Bear with me through this comprehensive but invaluable explanation.

Art Endures Bickering Fades
PNoy once famously quipped “I have never set foot on the CCP”. Former President Noy Noy seems oblivious to his own mother’s legacy by opening up the Center to more people. He is oblivious to the fact that more artists, more of the public were welcomed in to the CCP as an attempt to shed its elitist reputation starting from 1986 onwards. Isn’t that legacy worth returning to or recognizing as well?

Art is beyond politics even if it provides a reflection of current times. One has to be open-minded, be accepting of different points of views and political affiliations IF it is to be a true Cultural Center. I could remember an exhibit of sculptor Toym Imao’s work highly critical of the Marcos Dictatorship using anime: Voltes Five and Mazinger Z as design inspiration. It is from an era where PNoy would have related to as Voltes Five was very much popular in the 1970s which then President Marcos banned.

Encompasses Many Art Forms
The exhibit was entitled ALTER NOTION by Toym Imao, in February 2016. PNoy would have related to it in many levels as a figure from his own youth as well as the political underpinnings. But he chose to close himself from it and many landmark performances out of sheer ignorance.
He has such a narrow-minded view of what CCP is. The prestigious venue encompasses so many art forms, countless artists and performers, innumerable events of all sorts, how can you pigeonhole CCP as politically biased IN ANY way? Except what it’s supposed to do in prioritizing Filipino arts and culture. Yearly there are 800 different shows, concerts and events held there.

And if you can’t expect the President to know what’s going on there, how can you expect the average Filipino to do so? AS you can see and hear they’re having a hard enough time producing the shows / productions let alone properly market and promote them.

Cinemalaya
Off the top of my head I can remember at least three Cinemalaya films dealing with the atrocities of Martial Law: KA ORYANG (2011) by Sari Dalena with Alessandra De Rossi, DAGSIN (2016) by Atom Magadia, RESPETO (2017) by Treb Montreras starring rapper Abra. An exhaustive search would definitely reveal more titles dealing with the negative effects of the Marcos regime not just in the competition category but also in the documentaries screened.

KA ORYANG however is the most graphic, revealing the unique methods of torture and rape of female martial law victims. One is stripping them completely naked and making them lie on a block of ice for hours. Directed by Sari Dalena who has a documentary film background, she believes in showing them on screen as a means to remind viewers of what happened during that very dark period in our history.
KA Oryang trailer
Cinemalaya is the film festival that started the trend of financing deserving independent filmmakers in the Philippines. Cinemalaya calls CCP home base and during the fest, turns the theaters and even conference rooms into different sized cinemas. German film auteur Axel Estein told me that Cinemalaya is unique because it allows audiences to mingle with cast members, writers and directors. Not the same with Cannes or Berlin, TIFF etc. Since its inception other festivals locally have replicated the formula of providing financing to first time filmmakers: CINEMA ONE, QCINEMA, SINAG MAYNILA.
RESPETO trailer
Cinemalaya films have dealt with Japanese atrocities during World War II: SUNDALONG KANIN (2014) by Janice O’Hara, the abuse of Spanish authorities in AMORE Y MUERTE (2015) by Cesar Evangelista starring Althea Vega and Markki Stroemm. Homosexuality, violence against women, the abuse of OFWs, these are just a few of the themes that have been portrayed on screen.

Art isn’t about taking sides politically, historically or any other issue. It is more about provoking thought and discussion. When you open yourself to different ideas and points of view that’s when you allow your mind (and heart) to grow.
And when it does take sides, because of the nature of the medium, the filmmaker is obligated to ‘show’ or justify a certain point of view. The story and dialogue, performances are all contributory to that idea. As viewers, we ask ourselves not just what the ‘statement’ is but why the artist is saying it and determine for ourselves if it is truth.
Poverty Porn?
In one of the awards nights of Cinemalaya, I had the rare opportunity to talk to Peque Gallaga, considered as one of the greatest filmmakers in the country. He decried the fact that the Philippines was winning awards for films that only highlighted the poverty in the country. He felt that just because the Europeans enjoyed watching ‘poverty porn’ doesn’t mean that’s all that we should produce. “That’s not all that our country is about”

I was fortunate enough to ask Brillante Mendoza about Gallaga’s point of view. Mendoza is the director who has won countless awards abroad, in what may be in that classification or category. His response was short and clear, “Ito ang realidad ng nakararaming Pilipino.” (This is the reality that a majority of Filipinos find themselves in) To be honest, I thought that there was validity in Peque’s observation. Brillante’s response however, gave me a deeper understanding of his work and his motivations.

Mendoza’s influence among filmmakers is strong and undeniable including that of Cinemalaya filmmakers who have themselves won accolades internationally. As mentioned above, however, there are countless other themes and stories that have been portrayed by filmmakers. Mendoza has also become the founder of a film festival himself in SINAG MAYNILA, but is not part of the CCP.

Tanghalang Pilipino
This ‘reality’ or conscious decision to portray poverty in a sense, can also be extended to Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the CCP. The company is dedicated to use the national language Filipino as its medium of communication.

One of their most recent productions is KATSURI an adaptation by Bibeth Orteza of the novella of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Set in Negros it touches on the oppression and abuse of sacadas (subsistence farmers). Although feudalism has occurred for centuries it has taken a worse turn in the past 2 years with the massacre of sacadas and even lawyers, activists, NGOs working on their behalf. Tanghalang Pilipino Artistic Director Nanding Josef said it was part of their mission to be ‘the voice of the voiceless’.

Even MABINING MANDIRIGMA, which has had several successful runs the past years, can also fall into this category of championing the poor. Although it has an entirely different look and design being a steam punk musical. Based on the life of hero Apolinario Mabini, the sublime paralytic who rose to intellectual heights in spite of his very humble roots. Last August, no less than Monique Wilson was cast in the lead role. The bourgeoisie is vilified as manipulative and self-serving in the young revolutionary government.

My own favorite STAGESHOW by late playwright and actor Mario O’Hara is an example of portraying the struggles of the poor. This is where the Bodabil stars of yesteryear have fallen from grace financially and their distasteful means of survival. It also starred Nonie Buencamino, one of the hosts of the BULAWAN CCP 50th Gala.

Varied Points of View
From the CCP’s perspective, even when both Cinemalaya and Tanghalang Pilipino have a tendency to portray the reality of the ‘majority of Filipinos’, somehow it still balances out. When we say balance out this is as far as programming or scheduling of fare within CCP itself.

from left: Violist Rey Casey Concepcion is applauded by French conductor Michaël Cousteau – 150 YEARS OF BERLIOZ, A Tribute to French composer Hector Berlioz, part of Gold Classical Music Treasures series; Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 37th Season at the CCP Main Theater last October 25, 2019. Photo by Jude Bautista
Consider the concerts of Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, UST Symphonic Orchestra, the performances of Ballet Philippines. Like it or not the people attracted to these are from A & B audiences. In terms of taste, they are unabashedly elitist. So in a way, there is a balancing out of points of view, taste and thinking. The CCP is where the most classical forms of music, dance (in ballet) exist side by side with independent cinema and a theater company dedicated to the national language.

In actuality, however, even when the ‘reality of the majority’ is portrayed by Cinemalaya and Tanghalang Pilipino, their own audience isn’t necessarily mass market. Although in recent years Cinemalaya has expanded to many malls with cooperation of Ayala malls not just in Metro Manila but also in Cebu, Davao and Bacolod etc. There’s a desperate need to elevate the viewing taste and appreciation of Filipinos for independent cinema, theater, classical music, ballet, native / traditional dance, even art in general.

Thousands Abuzz
During the Cinemalaya festival the whole CCP is abuzz with activity. From the cavernous Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (main theater) to improvised mini cinemas, screening rooms in the higher floors. You’ll see thousands of people, students, young professionals running around trying to catch certain movies or screaming their heads off seeing a matinee idol in person during a gala.

All in all almost, 40,000 viewers tallied including the screenings in malls and other venues. Still it’s not MMFF, Metro Manila Film Fest numbers where one movie by Vice Ganda or Bossing Vic Sotto can rake in a hundred million pesos (or more) nationwide. Because of the number of titles produced and financing for their projects, plus press cons, awards night costs etc, Cinemalaya is still not economically self sustaining.

Virgin Lab Fest
Virgin Lab Fest is a festival where playwrights both established and first timers get to showcase their work. They are smaller or shorter productions of plays run one after the other by set. So in a span of 2-3 hours you can watch 3 plays. Again during the Virgin Lab Fest there are thousands of people in CCP, every stage space is utilized. The quality of work, writing and performances are at par with any major or huge production. It’s more just a question of length. The brevity allows more work to be seen by more people, in one sitting.

Last July, I was able to catch Layeta Bucoy’s THE UNREACHABLE STAR, directed by Mara Marasigan. Layeta Bucoy is a Palanca winner and multiple Philstage Gawad Buhay awardee. UNREACHABLE STAR is a commentary on how corruption starts from the lowest ranking officials who justify it because of their need to survive. In the same set is WANTED: MALE BOARDERS by Rick Patriarca who is completing his M.A. in Creative writing in U.P. Although Patriarca is a newcomer, WANTED: MALE BOARDERS garnered the most uproarious laughter from audiences. Lance Reblando is the super gay and horny Melody. She seduces her board mates who are still figuring out their own sexuality.

Creating An Audience
Both Cinemalaya and Virgin Lab Fest are similar in a sense that they are able to discover new talent in their respective fields and at the same time create an audience for them. Even if, some might argue, the size of the audience still does not make either economically profitable.
Enumerating them again, there’s Cinemalaya, Virgin Lab Fest and resident theater company Tanghalang Pilipino. Their contributions to Philippine cinema and theater (or even art and culture) can never be overemphasized or measured. Is it any surprise that all of them call the CCP home?

PASINAYA
Admittedly the cost of a PPO concert or a Ballet Philippines ticket would be prohibitive to the great majority of Filipinos. As stated earlier the prices exacerbates a desperate need to develop and educate Filipinos in the appreciation of classical music, ballet, independent cinema, folk dances, theater and art in general.

PASINAYA is the CCP’s answer in encouraging everyone to take part by opening up a varied array of performances, exhibits, screenings, concerts on a donation basis. Back in 2014 it was P50 or even less, based on your donation. A P300 fast pass allows you to skip lines and get the best seats to all the shows. At that time CCP VP and Artistic Director Chris Millado announced that the total people who attended the event was about 50,000. The latest number will definitely be higher by now. PASINAYA is held annually either February or early March.

More than 3,000 artists and 300 institution-based, community-based and school-based artistic groups participated during PASINAYA festival in CCP. The 10th edition expanded to the National Museum and Metropolitan Museum and other establishments, March 16, 2014. Photo by Jude Bautista
Millado said, “The PASINAYA is a multi-arts festival so it involves all the arts. Not only the 7 arts but festivals, street dances, markets, food trucks and even popular entertainment at some point.”
The pricing actually allows the mass market to watch a show by Ballet Phil, Ballet Manila, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Bayanihan National Folkdance Company, PPO, which may total in the thousands of pesos if scheduled separately. In truth, there are literally 50+ more theater, dance, music performances along with award winning Short films you can watch from all over all in one place for the ‘suggested’ price of 50 pesos.

PASINAYA according to Millado, has also become an event, which builds momentum for all the other genre specific festivals in the CCP for the rest of the year. Awareness is increased for the Guitar Festival, Dance Festival, Orchestra Festival etc.
3,000 Artists
If there is one program or festival that gives me hope about the future it is PASINAYA. Young people mostly adolescent to teen years are themselves performers—coming from all around the country. More than 3,000 artists and 300 institution-based, community-based and school-based artistic groups participate each year. By now, the number may have also grown.
They are from a gamut of the arts: Dance troupes, musicians/ instrumentalists associations to theater companies and more that don’t necessarily fall into a category.

Hope for the Youth
There are so many different acts that the side streets leading to the CCP complex are closed. I remember seeing a brass band competition. There are jazz and blues renditions from instruments like the clarinet, flute, saxophone etc.
The famous CCP ramp is turned into a stage, where troupes perform very traditional, very regional dances from locales of their origin. Again these are very young people who dedicated hours upon hours, over months to master them, if not years. The results speak for themselves. You could see how happy and passionate they are with what they’re doing.

Feeling Glee
PASINAYA culminates with the gala at Tanghalnag Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater). The large theater is filled with these young people. The concert is composed of the resident companies: Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino, even the winner (for 2014) of NAMCYA Baao Children & Youth Choir.

The Rondalla group was like rock stars. I never imagined I could see the glee of 13 year olds by listening and watching a masterful rendition of a traditional Filipino instrument. They’re not just audience per se but musicians and dancers themselves. These are among the 3,000 young performers, enjoying and appreciating traditional Filipino music, culture and dance.

For anyone who says OPM is dead, that we’ve lost touch with our Filipino traditions, all you need to do is attend PASINAYA especially with young people in your lives and you will find out otherwise. We’re going beyond discovering new talent and building an audience with PASINAYA. We’re molding minds not as viewers but as future creators and performers themselves who will continue what they’ve learned and experienced.

What Defines A Country?
What is the soul of a country? Why is it in something as expressive as say a dance? Why preserve it? When you say Philippines or Filipino what does it really mean if not a concept? How would you define it? It’s extremely abstract, until you show something as traditional and identifiable as the Tinikling, Pandanggo sa Ilaw and so on. The dances are a gateway to a cornucopia of OTHER art forms namely music, lyrical, literary traditions, costumes, fashion. The movement is a form of storytelling.

There are a variety of themes: marriage, harvest, courtship even war, conflict of bygone eras. Cultures, places eaten up by development. Even our very history as a people is told through dance.

A way of life that is all but extinct and forgotten. This is who we were. Every time you hear a gong from Basilan or see the colors of black, red and gold from the Yakan wedding costume you know that’s Filipino. We have to recognize the disparate parts from all these far flung and near places and bygone eras as well as ‘today’ to concretize our identity, continually defining who and what it means to BE Filipino.

Everything that Goes On
That’s why we need that one place, that home where we can go to as a refuge for these arts. That’s what the CCP has been the past 50 years. The fests that I described above: Cinemalaya, Virgin Lab Fest, PASINAYA, the resident companies Tanghalang Pilipino, BP, PPO UST PO etc. they don’t even scratch the surface of everything that’s going on in CCP. Don’t forget NAMCYA-National Music Competitions for Young Artists, which develops a whole host of instrumentalists and musicians.
There’s so much more I personally haven’t experienced and have not been able to mention here. For example, the internationally renowned and respected Ramon Magsaysay Awards is also held in the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo every year.

The CCP means so much to so many people performers of all sorts: actors, dancers, singers, performance artists, musicians, instrumentalists, the creators: playwrights, composers, directors, choreographers, lighting designers, set designers, costume designers, artists of every kind: painters, sculptors, installation artists, writers of all kinds, poets, lyricists, screenwriters, rappers and most of all the fans, the audiences who consume their work.

For Generations to Come
The CCP means so much to so many people, if it doesn’t mean anything to you personally, as a Filipino it should. For generations to come, this is where the soul of the nation resides. It is asking for your help.
This is our home, the home of our ancestors at the same time the place for the youth. This is the soul of our country. So the question becomes, how much is the soul of a nation worth? The real answer is that it is priceless. We can’t put a price tag on it except to preserve the place, the institution, the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
