Daniel Padilla (Miguel) and Rans Rifol (Andrea) walk through an alley. She hears chickens through an aluminum shutter. (Translated from Waray) Andrea: Did you hear that? Miguel: Hear what? Andrea: Try to open that with this. – gives him a piece of metal. After picking the bottom, it rolls up easily.

As the two walk in, chickens fly across the room. A small child runs towards them chasing after the chicken. Andrea instinctively grabs the boy. From a dark corner, an old man pulls a knife, Andrea points her gun at the old man.

Roli Inocencio (Old man) – screams at the child: I told you to stay put! Andrea: I’ve got this. (points gun at child). Old Man: Don’t hurt him. Andrea: The chickens, I want both.

Old Man: Take it you piece of shit. Andrea: Slaughter them.

After grabbing them, he chops their heads off. Miguel stuff the chickens in a bag. The two walk back to the alley. Miguel: Andrea what was that?  What has gotten into you? Andrea: I had no choice, he had a knife. Miguel: No choice? An old man and that kid? Andrea: The old man had a knife. They’re all murderers these days. We have to stick together, the two of us, no matter what. I’ll never leave you.

Odette

December 16, 2021, a mere nine days before most Filipinos got a chance to watch KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON (Whether The Weather Is Fine) at the MMFF, Super Typhoon Odette hit landfall in the Philippines. It caused a path of destruction over two main island groups of Visayas and Mindanao. Cities from Siargao to Iloilo to Cebu, Tagbilaran, to Roxas in Palawan, many more towns and barrios in between suffered massive damages in property. Hundreds of thousands of families have been misplaced, lives lost, homes destroyed. Their means of living: fishing boats to farmlands wiped out.

The masterpiece by Carlo Francisco Manatad, KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON, could not have come at a more urgent and relevant time. The story of survival after Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), perfectly captures the psychological trauma and chaos that ensues after the super typhoon hit Tacloban in 2013. The film is a joint production by Black Sheep ProductionsGlobe Studios, and Dreamscape Entertainment.

Globe Studios has been involved with hits like ON THE JOB by Erik Matti and BIRDSHOT by Mikhail Red. The two are among the earliest Pinoy films made available in NETFLIX.

Globe Studios has helped produce KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON, ON THE JOB, BIRDSHOT, GOYO: ANG BATANG HENERAL and many other critically acclaimed films.

During KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON local preview, producers saw the chance to fund raise as well, and create awareness in aiding those affected by typhoon Odette. Apart from this is the bigger implication of how climate change has ravaged our country specifically.

7 MMFF Awards

The film already won critical acclaim way before the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) showing. It was released to Pinoy audiences last December 25, 2021 around the capital at Robinsons Malls, Shang Rila Plaza, SM Cinemas and Ayala Malls. The original premiere was August 9 in Italy, at the 74th Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Cinema e Gioventù Prize.

The 7 awards won at the MMFF Awards Night at the SAMSUNG Hall in SM AURA Premier, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, seemed especially sweeter. Gaining recognition from the most prestigious fest in the Philippines (in terms of audiences and sales) made everything more special last December 27. Even if BIG NIGHT! Won more awards at 8.

The awards include: — 2nd Best Picture, Best Actress (Charo Santos-Concio), Best Supporting Actress (Rans Rifol), Special Jury Prize (Daniel Padilla), Best Production Design (Juan Manuel Alcazaren), Best Visual Effects (Mofac Creative Works, Hue Media Quantum Post, Ogie Tiglao) and Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.

Best Actress Charo Santos Concio

Different people react to tragedy in different ways. Charo Santos Concio’s performance as Norma retreated into her desperate need to rectify her past love with her ex-husband. Painful to watch doesn’t begin to describe the ordeal. She was willing to go through anything just to find him in the apocalyptic landscape.  When she should’ve just been looking after herself and her son.

The role defied all explanation, but Charo made it believable, relatable. So much so that you wanted her to find him even though it didn’t make sense to do so. Her performance took you to a place no one should have to visit. For that she won Best Actress. NOT hard to see mam Charo having a second renaissance in her acting career.

Best Supporting Actress Rans Rifol

Ricky Lee is not just an award winning novelist and screen writer. He also happens to be part of the MMFF Jury. In an another article in this site, he was able to explain via interview the nuances in the acting of Daniel Padilla, which clinched the Special Jury Award. But to most fans, Padilla was already a known factor in this regard.

The surprise of the evening belonged to newcomer Rans Rifol. She beat out perennial award winners Eugene Domingo and Janice De Belen both  from BIG NIGHT!

Lee said, “She was very raw and natural. And alam ko na di siya taga doon sa Tacloban. Pinagaralan niya yung Bisaya. More than that natural siya, pro siya, buong buo yung humanity na pinakita niya sa kanyang character doon sa pelikula. She was really good. Mahusay rin sina Eugene (Domingo) sina Janice (De Belen) mga beterano. Kung minsan yon naman ang maganda sa isang baguhan, may rawness pang nandoon e. May rawness rin si Eugene and Janice pero iba yung rawness ng first time sa isang pelikula.

Melancholy GI FINGER

Evidence of Rans Rifol’s exceptional talent was her vocal skills. One of the turning points for her character was when she rediscovered singing as a means to change her mood. In real life, she was a former member of girl group MNL48. In one scene she sang a popular Cebuano song GI FINGER by Kantin Dudg from 2008.

KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON Best Supporting Actress Rans Rifol. The MMFF 2021 Awards night was held at SAMSUNG HALL of SM AURA PREMIER, Bonifacio Global Center, Taguig, December 27, 2021. Photo by Jude Bautista

Based on lyrics alone, one could see it as a novelty song with humorous sexual connotations. Not unlike DON’T TOUCH MY BIRDIE by Parokya Ni Edgar. But Rans was able to sing it in such a way as to make it more melancholy. GI FINGERS, lyrics is about a party that ran out of utensils for guests. As solution, they started eating with their hands, hence ‘gi fingers na lang’. In this case instead of a party, it was a disastrous typhoon, forcing them to eat with their hands. She brought out the longing and the desperation, you didn’t know was in the song.

Music Heals

Director Carlo Manatad touched on a very Filipino trait, using music as a means to heal, a means of escape. So a lot was riding on the work of Musical scorer Andrew Florentino who composed a lot of the original music. Florentino was more than up to the task, creating touching and memorable melodies especially towards the climax.

Apart from GI FINGERS is another Filipino folk rock classic used in the film: HIMIG NG PAG IBIG by Asin, (originally released 1979). It was the first love song written by Lolita Carbon who also sang the signature scratchy but moving vocals. The song speaks about that yearning desire to be with someone, a lover whom you haven’t been with for a long time. Likens the emotion of love to music. It was as if Carbon wrote it for the movie, lending the film a hopeful message. This particular song has special meaning for Filipinos.

Best Production Design Whammy Alcazaren

One wouldn’t immediately or normally assign the best Production design to a disaster film. But the convincing nature of the ‘sets’ may have won it for Juan Manuel Alcazaren, (Whammy to colleagues and friends). His work is so convincing, one would never think that any of it was shot on a designed / constructed set.

Producer Armi Rae Cacanindin revealed that they shot on several locations, mostly around Metro Manila. These include Cainta for the interior / alley scenes. The beach scene was shot in Zambales. The only scene shot in Tacloban was the Convention Center which served as the relief center. But watching it, you’d think everything was in Tacloban – the site of Yolanda in 2013.

Zambales took the place of Tacloban for the beach scenes in KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON. Photo from Official fb page:
https://www.facebook.com/theweatherfilm/

They thought of shooting around Metro Manila as a matter of convenience. AND the fact that devastated areas, structures can no longer be found in Tacloban. Or in the same condition as 2013.

Must watch takes on a new meaning in KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON. The film successfully captures not just the face and identities but more importantly the collective emotional and psychological trauma of a whole community.
