Episodes
The technique of having 3 different chapters is often used in the Philippine Horror genre. Most especially in MMFF e,g. SHAKE RATTLE AND ROLL series.
The first episode KUMBENTO, starring Beauty Gonzalez (Sister Teresa) is given the task of bringing food to the basement to people she neither sees nor talks to. Elizabeth Oropesa is Sor Fides, her superior who is unwilling to talk about the secrets of the nunnery. KUMBENTO is set in the 1950s (post World War II).

The second Episode is BAHAY set in 1974 (early years of Martial Law) in the fictional town of Maria. It stars Aiko Melendez (Espie) who tries to protect her son Joaquin Domagoso (Buboy) from a spate of serial murders of teenage boys.

The third episode is HOTEL starring Kim Chiu as Amor who is billeted in a quarantine hotel during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-stars include: Jameson Blake (Jeric), Donna Cariaga (Daday), Tina Paner (Patricia).

Best Screenplay Nomination
HUWAG KANG LALABAS, understandably, was nominated for Best Screenplay (Jerry B. Gracio). As evidence of the impressive array of titles for this year, it was beat out by BIG NIGHT! ( won by writer / director Jun Robles Lana). Had it been any other year Gracio may have clinched the trophy.

Juror Ricky Lee, considered one of the best screenwriters of our country was able to praise HUWAG KANG LALABAS as well, “Maganda yung kunsepto niya yung tatlong periods. From World war II, Martial Law and Present day, pagtatahi. Maganda yung kunsepto niya sa dami ng ka lagiman ng ating pamumuhay sa bawat period na yon. Lumalabas ang tumatanggol pa satin ay ating kino-konsider as monsters: Yung multo, yung Kataw. At ang tao pala mismo ang tunay na monster. So napaka lakas na mensahe. I think that was the best point sa pelikulang yon.

Bien Lumbera & Ricky Lee
The Awards night last December 27 was held at the SAMSUNG HALL of SM Aura Premier. The ceremony honored former MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim and National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera with the Natatanging Gawad MMFF award.

Lumbera was a Juror for the Metro Manila Film Festival along with Ricky Lee in so many editions. BUT their friendship goes way back when Lee was still a budding writer, “Ever since magkasama kami. All the way, mentor, si Bien. Lagi ko siyang kasama sa napaka raming bagay. Pati na sa personal na buhay, sa party. Ma mimiss siya ng industriya ng pelikulang Pilipino aside from Literature at iba’t ibang fields. Para siyang voice of wisdom na nasa gitna mo. Para siyang level headed na tao na nasa gitna. Malaking na wala.”

Both of them also have the distinction of being Martial Law victims. That was when in 1972 then President Ferdinand Marcos started to jail students, writers, journalists, activists for their political beliefs. It did not even matter if they actually criticized the government or not. As long as they were suspected, they were arrested, tortured sometimes killed, in the thousands.

Lee described, “Magkakasama kaming na kulong. Sama sama kaming na huli. Sama sama kaming na kulong. Sama sama kaming na release after one year.” The movie comes at a time when young people, most people don’t even want to think of that very dark period of history. That’s IF they’re even aware of it.

Lee also thought Lumbera would’ve appreciated the reference to martial law in HUWAG KANG LALABAS, “Definitely. He would ‘ve seen pagtatahi nung tatlong periods. He would’ve seen napaka laking posibilidad ng pelikula.”

KUMBENTO
Beauty Gonzales is able to show her acting chops as novice nun Sister Teresa. La Oropesa, delivered a strong performance as antagonist Sor Fides. Rosana Roces plays Sister Esther while horror regular Matet De Leon is Sister Rosa.

Again, viewers have to pay close attention to dialogue, to figure out their motivations. The Fides character represents the Catholic church’s outdated notions on women’s rights. Penalizing victims of rape, not giving them the option of having an abortion. Even the question of how we define mental illness is raised and how to treat it, deal with it.

These aren’t topics one would expect from what is supposed to be a scream fest. Viewers beliefs, sacred images are all being challenged. Albeit, in a more subtle way.

OFW Pains in HOTEL
Kim Chiu as Amor can be seen as representing the OFW pain early during the pandemic. This was the time when quarantine facilities were not well managed to say the least. In the movie pests were a great source of their discomfort.

Donna Cariaga also plays OFW Daday in this chapter. She just came from another horror episode called 7 DAYS OF HELL by Erik Matti. It was shot as part of the FOLKLORE series for HBO. Tina Paner (Patricia), Brenda Mage (Ben / Bini) and Jameson Blake (Jeric), round out the cast for this episode.

CCP as Evil NOT Chinese People
The message seems to be deeper and more complex in HOTEL, much like real life. There was an extremely quick visual reference pointing to the Chinese government as the villain in this episode. But it’s complicated by the fact that Kim Chiu is herself, Filipino of Chinese descent (including this writer).

The message may seem to be interpreted as Fil Chinese are also indirectly victimized. Clearly in reality, P.R.O.C Citizens are themselves victims of their government’s repression. Specifically Xi Jing Ping’s administration. So they, Chinese people in their homeland, even here deserve our sympathy instead of anger.
