Tuesday night, September 28, 2021 – Na lulungkot ako. I found out on TV Patrol Bien Lumbera passed away at age 89. He was our National Artist for Literature. His literary work has been pored over and hailed many times by better men, more qualified women than me. BUT I knew him as the founding member of Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. I’ve always tried to emulate his work but knew that he was just on an entirely different level.

He was the epitome of a critic and his journalistic work should be similarly honored. There should be a more comprehensive tribute to him in one form or another. Especially recognizing his efforts in supporting Phil. cinema, theater in his later years.

Ibang usapan na yon pag siya yung nag review ng pelikula. Yung andar ng utak, mata, tapos yung galing niyang magsulat, wala naman ako ng lahat na yon. And was well aware, that it was just a small facet of who he was and his accomplishments. Even if it’s the one I am familiar with.

You could not get a more esteemed member of your award giving body. That’s why he was part of the board of judges in MMFF – Metro Manila Film Festival, Cinemalaya and of course the Urian Awards, organized by the Manunuri Ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

Mario O’Hara

In 2012, I submitted a proposal to the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) to give the National Artist award for Mario O’Hara. That was the year that O’Hara a well-respected and loved film writer / actor / director passed away.

Unbeknownst to me Gibbs Cadiz (of Philippine Daily Inquirer) also submitted a proposal for Mario O’Hara highlighting his work in theater (also as writer / actor / director). That’s  how expansive his body of work was – film, theater and even broadcast as voice talent, scriptwriter and director.

Mario O’Hara distinguished himself as screenwriter, actor and director. Here he received the Cinema One Original Lifetime Achievement award, November 13, 2011 at the Carlos P Romulo Theater in Makati. Photo by Jude Bautista.

Since I always bump into ‘Sir Bien’ as he is affectionately known, I managed to get his glowing endorsement of Mario O’Hara. Sir Bien was very much aware of O’Hara’s achievements, having written the screenplay for Lino Brocka’s masterpiece INSIANG. Brocka is himself a National Artist for Film. 2012 was the same year that O’Hara’s STAGESHOW was rerun by Tanghalang Pilipino for the National Theater Fest.

I think it’s part of Sir Bien’s generosity and love for Pinoy talent that made him easily endorse and support O’Hara. Contrast that to a contemporary (who will remain unnamed) who advised against the award for Mario. Which was surprising considering, we thought that person was O’Hara’s long-time friend.

From left: Angeli Bayani (Ka Oryang), Dennis Marasigan (Anatomiya Ng Korupsyon), Mario O’Hara and Martha Comia (Mga Anino Sa Tanghaling Tapat). Photo was taken, November 13, 2011 at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater in Makati. Photo by Jude Bautista.

On the other hand, Director Joey Reyes, was irked with me for not submitting the proposal sooner, while O’Hara was alive. That makes perfect sense actually, admittedly. It’s a no-brainer. As Mario would have benefitted from the financial support which came with the award. Reyes’ reaction is the natural, logical reaction of anyone familiar with O’Hara’s work.

Needless to say, the NCCA did not grant the National Artist award to O’Hara, in spite of Lumbera’s endorsement. If granted, however, it was still possible for O’Hara to receive it posthumously. And his heirs / family to receive the financial benefits.

Virgie Moreno

Another literary giant I’ve had the privilege of photographing and often seeing in film fests and cultural events was poet laureate Virginia Moreno. She preferred the affectionate, Tita Virgie as everyone called her. She was always very warm.

By her approachable demeanor, you wouldn’t know that she garnered several international awards, the highest honors: “In 1984, Moreno won the Southeast Asia (SEA) Write Award, recognizing the impact of her literary excellence and cultural leadership in the ASEAN region. In 1991, she was conferred the Chroslais dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French Government. She also served as chair of the UNESCO Culture Committee of the Philippines” From: Farewell to Virginia Moreno, The High Priestess of Philippine Poetry August 15, 2021 | Written by Celeste Ann Castillo Llaneta

Tita Virgie Passed away August 14, 2021 age 96. I was able to photograph her at Ballet Philippines’ ALICE & FRIENDS, Feb. 21, 2020. That was immediately before the ECQ lockdowns took effect. Where Virgie’s play THE ONYX WOLF was re-interpreted by Ballet Philippines. The original lead dancer for it was Alice Reyes in 1970 also happens to be our National Artist for Dance.

I remember asking her thoughts on the National artist award for either her or her brother renowned fashion designer Pitoy Moreno. To which she replied, “We do not need or seek recognition from this government.” Possibly because, both of them have been recognized abroad for their work. But I think, it’s more the loss of our younger generation who are unfamiliar with their legacies.

Privilege

I know, looking back at my life there are many times I’ve questioned the choices I’ve made professionally. There are countless times I’ve doubted myself. BUT now that I’ve collated some photos with Sir Bien and Tita Virgie I realized I’ve led a very privileged life.

Parang sobrang dami na naming pinagsamahan. Kahit di niya ko maalala dahil sa dami ba naman ng nag shshoot sa kanya at nag-iinterview. Even if I’m just a fanboy who happened to be there to shoot him. I count myself so lucky. In between there are a dozen, or twenty more events that I haven’t listed here na na kita ko siya.

Remembering them, I don’t regret the choices I’ve made professionally. There are many more names and faces we’ve lost who have contributed greatly to Filipino cinema, theater and or cultural scene who passed away. I feel so lucky to have met them as well. They are interconnected with Sir Bien, in one way or another. And I’m honored, somehow they also touched my own life.

Mario Hernando

Mario Hernando, is another esteemed film critic, colleague of Lumbera, who may be more popular. He had a TV show in GMA in the 90s. And is also a distinguished and founding member of the Manunuri. He was later appointed to the Movie Television Review and Classification Board. I’m so proud to call him a friend. That’s how made me feel every time we’d see each other in press cons. Mario passed away from bone and prostate cancer September 5, 2017. He was 68.

Bernardo Bernardo

Bernardo is a multi-awarded screen and theater actor. Fans know him as Steve Carpio in HOME ALONG DA RILES that starred Dolphy in ABS CBN.

BUT I remember him most in his 2015 title role in HARING LEAR. It was a translation of the Shakespearean classic by Bienvenido Lumbera to Filipino, Directed by Nonon Padilla. When he returned from the U.S. he also became a regular in the film and theater scene here. He died from pancreatic cancer March 8, 2018 age 73.

More recently Repertory Philippines founder Baby Barredo passed away May 23, 2021. Soxie Topacio of PETA passed on July 21, 2017, he directed HIMALA the Musical, where I photographed Sir Bien in 2013. Young actor Aaron Ching of TP was also there in the opening of HIMALA. Ching passed away a year later June 30, 2014 at age 23. You can read about the PHILSTAGE tribute to Direk Soxie here.

Fixture in CCP

Sir Bien was a fixture in the CCP. His was a reassuring presence, I’m sure not just for me. Just seeing him there in ANY event, his presence lends unique legitimacy be it for Tanghalang Pilipino, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, or across town in PETA and certainly Cinemalaya. You get the feeling that what you’re doing, what you’re seeing is the right thing to do, the right place, the right event.

Ano na mangyayari kung lumingon ako at di ko siya makita sa TNA Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo? Nakaka lungkot, nakaka panghina ang laking kawalan sa mudo ng sining.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Lumbera was a spiritual father to the cultural community. He was a fatherly presence to countless performers, writers, actors, directors, dancers, choreographers, artists, lighting, stage, costume designers, make-up artists. He was always there being supportive. He made it his life’s mission to support and recognize Filipino talent.

Throughout our creative life he’s nurtured us. Supposedly we’ve all grown up now, ready to stand on our own. So even if he’s no longer there physically, we know he’ll be with us in our hearts. His ideals of generosity, kindness, Pinoy pride will always stay with us.
